The association of autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) has been studied for over 60 years, yet their causal relationship has not been elucidated. Most published papers report a better prognosis of the patients with tumour in the field of thyroiditis. In our work we aimed to find out the differences in the clinical behaviour of PTC depending on the presence of autoimmune inflammation.

We retrospectively analysed a group of 1,201 patients with PTC dispensed in St. Elisabeth Cancer Institute and Faculty of Medicine from 2000 to 2015. We divided patients with AIT according to the time of diagnosis of inflammation into the AIT1 subgroup, which included patients monitored for AIT before tumour detection. In them, we assumed that the factor of long-term endocrinological monitoring could speed up the diagnosis of the tumour and thus improve the prognosis. The AIT2 subgroup consisted of patients with both tumour and inflammation diagnosed simultaneously, thus eliminating the factor of prior monitoring.

PTC in the AIT1 subgroup had better prognostic parameters (TNM stage, persistence, disease remission). Patients in the AIT2 group had all monitored parameters comparable with patients with tumours without autoimmune inflammation.

Piperlongumine (PL), an alkaloid from the Piper longum plant, is acknowledged for various biological properties. The study aimed to explore the protective effect of PL on ischemia reperfusion injury (I/R) in rat kidney.

24 adult male Sprague-Dawley rats (200 to 250 mg) were randomly allocated to four groups (n = 6/group) Group I sham control, Group II (I/R) renal ischemia/reperfusion kidney renal blocked for 1hour using clamps, followed by 2hr reperfusion. Group III PL (25 μg/kg) + I/R group and Group IV PL (50 μg/kg) + I/R group. Rat kidneys were exposed to 60 min of two-sided deep ischemia followed by 120 min of reperfusion. PL (25 and 50 μg/kg bw) was administered intraperitoneally half an hour before the ischemia. Creatinine, urea, and few renal markers activity in serum were assessed. Oxidative stress and inflammatory markers were also evaluated. In addition, the expressions of COX-2 and eNOS in animal kidneys were tested by western blotting.

Pre-treatment with PL in ischemia‑reperfused rats significantly reduced the pathological damage in the kidney and declined the levels of serum creatinine and other renal parameters. PL treatment diminished the serum levels of TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β, as well as messenger RNA expressions. Important biological defence parameters such as superoxide dismutase and glutathione levels were upregulated while malondialdehyde levels were down-regulated in PL ischemia rats.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) remains a leading cause of death in elderly patients. Recently, novel lipoproteins- Atherogenic Index of Plasma (AIP), Atherogenic Coefficient (AC) and Lipoprotein Combine Index (LCI) have been suggested as CAD risk factors; their clinical usefulness, however, remains unknown. The aim of the study was to assess the predictive value of AIP, AC and LCI concerning incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and all-cause mortality in 1-year follow-up.

For the study, 1,083 patients, aged 60 or older, with NSTEMI were enrolled and divided into two groups young-old and old-old.

MACE occurred in 11.8 % of the patients; LCI showed a borderline significance, but only in univariate analysis. Analysis in groups revealed ambiguous results. None of the examined indices was a predictor of MACE in the young-old group whereas all three of them were significant, but negative predictors in the old-old group. Finally, all-cause mortality at follow-up was 14.9 %. AC predicted 1-year mortality in the whole study population (OR = 1.1 (95% CI 1-1.2; p = 0.02), but was insignificant in the multivariable model. Additionally, it was an independent predictor in the old-old group, but with borderline significance (OR = 1.14 (95% CI 1-1.3, p = 0.036).

We investigated iron accumulation and the possible mechanisms in the rabbit cerebellum after the exposure to the real GSM and generated radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF EMF) using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP MS) and particles induced X-ray emission (PIXE).

Four groups of rabbits were exposed to the real EMF, generated EMF, combination of both the real and generated signals and the control group with no exposition. For determination of iron concentration in the four groups of cerebellum samples ICP MS was used. Iron accumulation in samples by PIXE analysis using the 3 MeV proton beam was carried out.

Iron concentration measured by ICP MS revealed no significant differences for all the groups. PIXE results showed a focal accumulation of iron with the size up to 3 mm. Highest concentration of iron after exposure to real signal was observed.

We suggest that the iron accumulation after the exposure to RF ELF is not the result of higher permeability of blood-brain barrier and leaking out of iron from the bloodstream into the brain cells and tissues. It could be the result of an iron actuation and its redistribution in the tissue (Fig. 2, Ref. 86).

This study aims to evaluate the association between prehospital intravenous therapy and clinical outcomes in the patients with acute heart failure.

We conducted aprospective, multicenter observational study of consecutive AHF patients. Univariate and logistic regression analysis were performed to determine association between prehospital furosemide or nitrates administration and hospital outcome (death, length of stay).

Data on a total of 1239 patients were processed. The mean age in the whole cohort was 71 ± 11.8 years with a gender distribution (M/F) of 634/605 patients. By prehospital treatment whole cohort was divided into 4 groups F+ group with prehospital IV furosemide administration of 602 patients (48.6 %), F- group without prehospital IV furosemide administration of 637 patients (51.4 %), N+ group with prehospital IV nitrates administration of 110 patients (8.9 %) and N- group without IV nitrates administration of 1129 patients (91.1 %). Group of combined F+/N+ was not created. Ninety-four patients (7.6 %) died during the index hospitalization. Hospital mortality (p = 0.138) and length of stay (p = 0.101) did not differ in F+ vs F-. The patients with prehospital nitrates administration did not differ in mortality, but a shorter length of stay in univariate analysis (p = 0.03) was recorded. After adjusting for age, systolic BP and mode of referral to hospitalization, early IV furosemide usage nor nitrates showed no impact on hospital mortality and length of stay.

Metabolic health and oocyte developmental competence was already significantly improved in the calorie-restricted group after 2 weeks, while obese mice that underwent diet normalization showed improved metabolic health after 2 weeks and improved oocyte quality after 4 weeks.

Maternal obesity is linked with reduced metabolic health and oocyte quality; therefore, infertile obese women are advised to lose weight before conception to increase pregnancy chances. However, as there are no univocal guidelines and the specific impact on oocyte quality is not known, strategically designed studies are needed to provide fundamental insights in the importance of the type and duration of the dietary weight loss strategy for preconception metabolic health and oocyte quality.

Notably, FA regio- and stereo-isomers differing in the location or (cis/trans) geometry of carbon-carbon double bonds are often incompletely separated and ambiguously assigned in conventional chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses. To address this challenge, FAs have been derivatized with the charge-switch derivatization reagents N-methyl-pyridinium-3-methanamine and N-(4-aminomethylphenyl)pyridinium and subjected to reversed-phase liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Charge-remote fragmentation of the fixed-charge derivatives leads to characteristic product ions arising from dissociation at allylic positions that enable assignment of position(s) of unsaturation, while a newly discovered dihydrogen neutral loss was found to be dominant for double bonds with cis-stereochemistry.
