Low back pain (LBP) is one of the most common complains in orthopedic outpatient department and intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) is one of the most important reasons of LBP. The mechanisms of IDD contain a complex biochemical cascade which includes inflammation, vascular ingrowth, and results in degradation of matrix. In our study, we used both in vitro and in vivo models to investigate the relation between tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-3 (TIMP3) expression and IDD. Loss of TIMP3 expression was found in degenerative intervertebral disc (IVD), this change of expression was closely related with the dephosphorylation of smad2/3. Overexpression of TIMP3 significantly inhibited the release of TNF-α and matrix degradation induced by Lipopolysaccharide. Vascular ingrowth was also suppressed by TIMP3 in the in vitro and in vivo models. Further, animal experiments confirmed that the degeneration of IVD was reduced after overexpression of TIMP3 in nucleus pulposus. Taken together, our results indicated TIMP-3 might play an important role in the pathogenesis of IDD and therefore be a potential therapeutic target in the future. © 2020 Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology.Traumatic tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is a rare cause of acute right ventricular dysfunction. The surgical technique could be complex and the reparative gesture has a lower success rate when compared with functional TR. We present the case of a 26-year-old male patient with traumatic TR who underwent tricuspid valve repair, with an initial satisfactory result. Later, the onset of acute severe residual TR was observed and the valve needed to be replaced. Surgery is the mainstay of treatment for traumatic TR, either in the form of repair or replacement. It requires an early diagnosis and concomitant treatment of injuries. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.The objective of this study was to determine the optimum concentrations of rainbow trout seminal plasma (RTS) supplemented extenders for goat semen quality at post-thaw and after incubation. Five sexually mature Saanen goat (Capra aegagrus hircus) were used for semen collection. Pooled semen was diluted with soybean lecithin-based extender without RTS (control) or supplemented with different concentrations of RTS (1%, 2%, 4% or 8%), at a final concentration of 150 × 106 spermatozoon/ml. Sperm motility, plasma membrane functional integrity (HOST), damaged acrosome (PSA-FITC), mitochondrial activity (rhodamine123) and DNA integrity (TUNEL) were evaluated. Spermatological parameters were evaluated at post-thaw and after 6 hr incubation. RTS8 group preserved sperm motility, acrosomal integrity, plasma membrane functional integrity and mitochondrial function better than the control group (p less then .05). The study demonstrated that RTS supplemented lecithin-based extenders have useful effects on goat spermatozoa. In addition, the results of the current study represented the positive effect of using 8% RTS supplemented extender. © 2020 Blackwell Verlag GmbH.Acute DeBakey I or II aortic dissection (AD) is a surgical emergency with significant mortality if not repaired immediately. We present the case of a 49-year-old man with acute type I AD, who initially underwent zone 2 arch replacement for a primary arch tear. A calcified ductus arteriosus was noted during arch reconstruction. He exhibited exsanguinating hemorrhage from the proximal descending thoracic aorta upon an initial attempt to wean off cardiopulmonary bypass. Hemostasis was achieved with retrograde transfemoral thoracic endovascular aortic repair and transmediastinal external cinch around the descending aorta to obliterate false lumen flow. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.BACKGROUND Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation to skin induces biological responses to protect and heal the wounded tissue. Cutaneous blood vessels play an important role in maintaining skin homeostasis, by inducing angiogenesis and vasodilation. However, the vascular dynamics in vivo, such as morphological changes over time and their depth dependency, are not fully understood. METHODS Ten Asian males were enrolled in this study and received UV (UVA + UVB) irradiation at two minimal erythema dose (MED) to the inner upper arm. Changes in epidermal thickness and vascular structures associated with UV irradiation were evaluated over time for 28 days by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). This technique enables non-invasive visualization of three-dimensional vascular networks in human skin based on OCT assessment of skin structures with near-infrared light. RESULTS Notable dilation of vascular structures and increases in epidermal thickness were observed after UV irradiation. Vessel density was markedly increased from the papillary dermis to the upper reticular dermis at a depth of 200 µm. These increases in vascular density showed significant persistence even at 28 days after UV irradiation. CONCLUSION We visualized the vascular structural changes caused by UV irradiation and revealed that the effects of a single UV irradiation at 2 MED persisted for up to 28 days after exposure. The OCTA technique allows not only the in situ assessment of micro-vasculature in human skin but also its monitoring of vascular dynamics over time. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd.Due to its versatile applications in biotechnology, ion current rectification (ICR), which arises from the asymmetric nature of the ion transport in a nanochannel, has drawn much attention, recently. Here, the ICR behavior of a pH-regulated nanochannel comprising two series connected cylindrical nanochannels of different radii is examined theoretically, focusing on the influences of the radii ratio, the length ratio, the bulk concentration, and the solution pH. The results of numerical simulation reveal that the rectification factor exhibits a local maximum with respect to both the radii ratio and the length ratio. The values of the radii ratio and the length ratio at which the local maximum in the rectification factor occur depend upon the level of the bulk salt concentration. The rectification factor also shows a local maximum as the solution pH varies. Among the factors examined, the solution pH influences the ICR behavior of the nanochannel most significantly. © 2020 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. JSH-23 KGaA, Weinheim.
