A cross-sectional study was carried out to evaluate shared pathogens that can be transmitted by close or non-close contact at the domestic-wild ruminants' interface. During summer-autumn 2015, a total of 138 cattle and 203 wild ruminants (red deer, Cervus elaphus, and fallow deer, Dama dama) were sampled in Doñana National Park (DNP, south-western Spain), a Mediterranean ecosystem well known for the interaction network occurring in the ungulate host community. Pestiviruses, bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV; Bovine orthopneumovirus), bovine herpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1; Bovine alphaherpesvirus 1) and Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTC) were assessed using serological, microbiological and molecular techniques. The overall seroprevalence against viruses in cattle was 2.2% for pestiviruses, 11.6% for BRSV and 27.5% for BoHV-1. No virus-specific antibodies were found in wildlife. MTC incidence in cattle was 15.9%, and MTC seroprevalence in wild ruminants was 14.3%. The same Mycobacterium bovis spoligotypes (SB1232, SB1230 and SB1610) were identified in cattle, red deer and fallow deer. The serological results for the selected respiratory viruses suggest epidemiological cycles only in cattle. Surveillance efforts in multi-host epidemiological scenarios are needed to better drive and prioritize control strategies for shared pathogens.Hypochlorite (ClO- ), as one of the active oxygen species (ROS), plays an essential role in the cellular defence system and organism immunity. In this paper, we successfully synthesized a new 'turn-on' fluorescent probe BMF based on benzimidazole and characterized it by spectroscopic methods. Elenbecestat molecular weight The designed probe can quickly respond to ClO- with the obvious colour change from pink to colourless. Notably, the probe BMF exhibited almost no fluorescence, but showed strong fluorescence after adding ClO- , including an excellent fluorescence turn-on effect. The fluorescence turn-on phenomenon of BMF was attributed to the strong oxidation of ClO- , which severed the connecting double bond and disrupted the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) system, plus light-induced electron transfer effect between the fluorophore and the recognition group was discontinued. In addition, the cytotoxicity assay showed that the probe had lower cytotoxicity. Based on these advantages, we demonstrated that probe BMF might be a good candidate for detecting ClO- in biological systems.Branching pattern formation is common in many microbes. Extensive studies have focused on addressing how such patterns emerge from local cell-cell and cell-environment interactions. However, little is known about whether and to what extent these patterns play a physiological role. Here, we consider the colonization of bacteria as an optimization problem to find the colony patterns that maximize colony growth efficiency under different environmental conditions. We demonstrate that Pseudomonas aeruginosa colonies develop branching patterns with characteristics comparable to the prediction of modeling; for example, colonies form thin branches in a nutrient-poor environment. Hence, the formation of branching patterns represents an optimal strategy for the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa colonies. The quantitative relationship between colony patterns and growth conditions enables us to develop a coarse-grained model to predict diverse colony patterns under more complex conditions, which we validated experimentally. Our results offer new insights into branching pattern formation as a problem-solving social behavior in microbes and enable fast and accurate predictions of complex spatial patterns in branching colonies.
Temporal hollowing causes an old and gaunt appearance. An inward curve of the temporal hairline adds to the severity of temporal hollowing, which is visually exacerbated by the dark-colored hairline in most Chinese women. Whether temporal augmentation using autologous fat grafting (AFG) is effective for correcting an inwardly curved temporal hairline remains unclear.
To assess the effect of temporal augmentation using AFG on the temporal hairline.
Forty-six women with an inward-curved temporal hairline, who underwent temporal augmentation using AFG, were recruited. The preoperative and postoperative severity of temporal hollowing was evaluated, and anthropometric measurements regarding the temporal hairline were performed on photographs taken in the frontal and lateral views. Subject satisfaction and incidence of complications were documented.
A slight increase in forehead width was observed. The minimal forehead width and minimal forehead width/forehead width ratio were increased. The width, depth, and height of the temporal peak were all increased as well, indicating that the previously inwardly oriented temporal peak was shifted slightly outward, upward, and backward after augmentation.
Autologous fat grafting satisfactorily smoothened the temporal hairline without excessively increasing forehead width in subjects with temporal hollowing and an inward-curved temporal hairline.

The primary objective of this review was to summarize the scientific literature about the frequency of detection, associated clinical presentations and type of samples and diagnostic tools used for the detection of porcine astroviruses. The secondary objective was to summarize the body of knowledge about the causal role in disease of PoAstVs using the Bradford Hill framework. A search was conducted using Centre for Biosciences and Agriculture International (CABI), MEDLINE, American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV) Swine Information Library (SIL) abstracts, swine conferences including American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) and American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD). From 168 studies identified by the search, 29 studies were eligible. Results indicated that 69% (20/29) of the literature on PoAstVs have been published between 2011 and 2018. Of 29 papers, 52% were detection studies (15 of 29) and 48% (14 of 29) were case-control studies. Seventy-two per cent (21 of 29) reported differential diagnosis and 10% (3 of 29) reported histologic lesions, out of which 67% (2 of 3) associated the detection of PoAstV3 with development of polioencephalomyelitis. PCR-based assays were the most common diagnostic tools.
Perinatal nutritional factors can program offspring metabolic phenotype and risk to obesity. We investigated the potential role of leptin supplementation (during lactation) in ameliorating the malprogrammed effects caused by mild maternal calorie restriction during gestation, on young rat offspring liver metabolic response.
Untargeted and targeted metabolomics studies on liver samples were performed by NMR and GC-MS, respectively. Global DNA methylation and the expression by RT-PCR of key genes involved in different pathways were also determined. By NMR, fifteen liver metabolites were observed to be altered in the offspring of gestational calorie-restricted dams (CR group), at days 25-27 of life. Physiological leptin supplementation during lactation partially reverted the effect of CR condition for most of these metabolites. Moreover, targeted fatty acid analysis by GC-MS showed a significant decrease in the hepatic concentration of certain very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFA) in CR offspring, partially or totally reverted by leptin supplementation. No remarkable changes were found in global DNA methylation or mRNA expression.
Physiological leptin supplementation during lactation contributes to the reversion of changes caused by maternal mild calorie restriction on the liver metabolome. This agrees with a putative role of leptin supplementation preventing or reversing metabolic disturbances caused by gestational metabolic malprogramming. This article is protected by copyright. However, in vivo BaP detoxification by lactic acid bacteria has not yet been investigated. The present study evaluates the effects of orally administered Lactobacillus plantarum CICC 23121 in BaP-treated mice. Oral administration of 50 mg kg-1 BaP perturbed the intestinal microflora, caused Proteobacteria to predominate, and severely damaged DNA. However, oral administration of 5 × 1010 CFU mL-1 CICC 23121 in BaP-treated mice enhances fecal BaP excretion from 181.70 ± 1.04 µg/(g∙h) to 271.47 ± 11.71 µg/(g∙h) after 6 h. Fecal BaP excretion reaches up to 280.66 ± 22.97 µg/(g∙h) after the first 4 days of orally administered CICC 23121 and decreased to 94.31 ± 2.64 µg/(g∙h) by day 11. Intestinal microbiota are restored and Firmicutes predominates. CICC 23121 alleviates BaP-induced DNA damage and reduces tail length from 56.37 ± 5.31 to 39.69 ± 4.27 µm. Therefore, oral CICC23121 consumption is a promising strategy for reducing BaP toxicity in mice. To the best of our knowledge, this report is the first report to demonstrate in vivo that Lactobacillus cells can detoxify BaP.

Species identification in the deep sea is significantly impeded by high numbers of new species and decreasing numbers of taxonomic experts, hampering any assessment of biodiversity. We used in parallel morphological, genetic, and proteomic characteristics of specimens of calanoid copepods from the abyssal South Atlantic to test if proteomic fingerprinting can accelerate estimating biodiversity. We cross-validated the respective molecular discrimination methods with morphological identifications to establish COI and proteomic reference libraries, as they are a pre-requisite to assign taxonomic information to the identified molecular species clusters. Due to the high number of new species only 37% of the individuals could be assigned to species or genus level morphologically. COI sequencing was successful for 70% of the specimens analysed, while proteomic fingerprinting was successful for all specimens examined.
