Forest cover improves surface water quality by minimizing soil erosion, reducing sediment in water and trapping or filtering water pollutants in forest litter. Because the amount of chemicals needed to produce potable water depends on the quality of intake water, upstream forest cover protection may help reduce the extent and cost of water treatment downstream. However, many other drivers exist for the cost of water treatment, so the magnitude and relevance of the influence of forest cover on water treatment cost is an empirical question. We analyze the impact of forest cover on the quality of raw water and the extent of water treatment required at the water treatment plants in Costa Rica, using monthly panel data in 2008-2014 from the drinking water treatment plants managed by the national public utility. We find that forest cover change during the study period statistically significantly affected the chemical use by water treatment plants. In economic terms, the estimated value of water purification service provided by forests is USD 9.5 per hectare per year. Depending on the discount rate, this results in a net present value of water purification service ranging between USD 315.4 and USD 113.9 per hectare. The results indicate that the economic value of the water purification service of forest is 1.7% of the value for recreational services; between 3.2% and 1.1% relative to the value of forest carbon sequestration typical in Costa Rica, depending on the discount rate; and around 13% of the payments for watershed protection program by the National Forest Financing Fund. The results also show that the marginal contribution of forest, on a per hectare basis, on water quality becomes larger as the size of catchment decreases.Stimulus-responsive pesticide or fertilizer systems have been emerged to improve the use efficiency of agrochemicals, reduce over-application and ensuing environmental problems. However, environmental-friendly synthesis of these systems still remain challenging. In this work, an environmental-friendly synthesis strategy has been developed to form a pesticide and fertilizer combination to achieve the integration of plant protection and nutrient supply. This pesticide-fertilizer combination system was fabricated using ammonium zinc phosphate (ZNP) and in-situ synthesized zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) as nutrients resources, and dinotefuran (DNF) as a pesticide. DNF was encapsulated in-situ (loading capacity of 12.32 ± 0.46%) during the ZIF-8 crystal synthesis process, rather than loaded by further adsorption, which improved its stability and prevented premature or rapid release. The hydrophobic ZIF-8 provided a pH-responsive slow-release behavior. The cumulative released DNF within seven days at pH 4.0, 7.0 and 10.0 was 66.30%, 40.41%, and 37.44%, respectively. The pesticide-fertilizer combination system showed significant effects on corn seed pre-cultivation, soil cultivation and pest control. This work provides a strategy for the integration of pesticide and fertilizer, which will reduce negative environmental effects caused by their over-applications and have great potential in modern sustainable agriculture.Accurate source markers, source profiles and species-based emission factors (EFs) are currently the key limitations for source apportionment and emission inventory researches. Fine particles (PM2.5) were collected from stack gases of eight types of stationary sources with a dilution sampling system. The mass percentages and EFs of 89 kinds of chemical species in PM2.5 including water-soluble ions, elements, carbonaceous species and molecular organic species were obtained. Results showed that water-soluble ions (8%-54%) and elements (5%-45%) were the dominant chemical species. Palmitic acid (0.19%-0.62%) and stearic acid (0.21%-0.59%) were the most abundant organic species. PM2.5 source profiles of the eight sources were different from each other with the coefficient of divergence values all higher than 0.4. The addition of organic species could help to further distinguish them. The indicatory chemical components and specific species ratios were obtained by both a statistical equation and randomForest. These indicatory chemical components (e.g. F- for glass factory) and species ratios (e.g. K+/Mg2+ & OC/Mg for pharmaceutical factory) improved the current knowledges of their indicatory performance in source identification of ambient PM2.5. The EFs of PM2.5 from the eight stationary sources ranged from 0.019 to 51.6 kg t-1 of fuel used. The EFs of PM2.5 from the pharmaceutical factory were about 70-2600 times higher than other seven types of sources due to the lack of dust-removing devices. Certain EFs measured in this study were about 10-36,000 times lower than corresponding EFs estimated in previous studies which didn't perform field measurements, indicating the necessity for improving emission inventories continuously. This study contributes to identifying emission sources of PM2.5 especially for subtypes of stationary sources and to establishing species-based emission inventories.BNT162b2 is a vaccine developed to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). BNT162b2 is a lipid nanoparticle formulated nucleoside-modified messenger RNA (mRNA) encoding the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) spike protein locked in its prefusion conformation. A developmental and reproductive toxicity study was conducted in rats according to international regulatory guidelines. The full human BNT162b2 dose of 30 μg mRNA/dose (>300 times the human dose on a mg/kg basis) was administered intramuscularly to 44 female rats 21 and 14 days prior to mating and on gestation days 9 and 20. Half of the rats were subject to cesarean section and full fetal examination at the end of gestation, and the other half were allowed to deliver and were monitored to the end of lactation. A robust neutralizing antibody response was confirmed prior to mating and at the end of gestation and lactation. The presence of neutralizing antibodies was also confirmed in fetuses and offspring. Nonadverse effects, related to the local injection site reaction, were noted in dams as expected from other animal studies and consistent with observations in humans. There were no effects of BNT162b2 on female mating performance, fertility, or any ovarian or uterine parameters nor on embryo-fetal or postnatal survival, growth, physical development or neurofunctional development in the offspring through the end of lactation. Together with the safety profile in nonpregnant people, this ICH-compliant nonclinical safety data supports study of BNT162b2 in women of childbearing potential and pregnant and lactating women.
The research aimed to assess the perception on nursing and nurses among schoolchildren of Slovenian elementary schools.
Among the general public, nursing remains under-recognized as an occupation and a science. Especially young people have unrealistic perceptions of nurses.
A cross-sectional research design was undertaken.
The study included 1984 eighth grade schoolchildren from 103 elementary schools. Data were collected with a structured questionnaire.
The research results revealed a positive general perception of nursing. Surprisingly, only 2.5% of respondents would consider a career in nursing. Girls had more understanding of nursing compared to boys (p<0.001); having a nurse relative meant better understanding of nursing (p=0.032). The influence of the traditional view of nursing and the biomedical model of care which describes nursing not as autonomous, but as subordinate to medicine, was considerate (p<0.001).
The study shows that elementary school children do not express an interest f the biomedical model of care. Healthcare policy makers must remember that healthcare systems cannot function without nurses, so developing nursing is crucial. To increase interest in the profession, a national campaign promoting nursing programs and the nursing profession and presenting horizontal and vertical career opportunities is needed. Young people must have realistic information on nursing as an occupation and a science, its role in the healthcare system, and career opportunities. Activities aimed at changing public opinion on nursing must be planned.Preceptorship in nursing is a complex responsibility that is often performed without any formal preparation. In nursing literature, there is consensus that nurse preceptors should be better supported and receive education regarding this role. There is however scarcity of evaluative evidence on educational strategies for preceptors of newly hired nurses transitioning to a new role. A structured online discussion forum (ODF) was developed and implemented to provide support and continuing education to a group of nurse preceptors (N = 25) in an accessible and low-cost manner; it was evaluated for the depth of knowledge co-construction. The results of this quality improvement (QI) project reveal that with sustained online and offline support and a structured learning activity, an ODF can encourage deep learning. Nurse preceptors who took part in this ODF reported feeling supported in their role of preceptor and desired to continue their participation.Considering the collaboration between immune responses and medications for the improvement of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), this study investigated the levels of T helper (Th) 22 and the corresponding cytokines in the acute phase of VL and their alterations following treatment. The study was conducted on 18 patients with confirmed VL and 20 healthy sex and age matched children as the controls. The levels of Th22 cells and the cytokines driving their differentiations and functions in the blood and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) cultured supernatants, were assessed using flow cytometry method. The results revealed significantly higher levels of Th22, IL-21 and IL-6 in the patients' blood than those in the controls. Additionally, higher levels of IL-21 and IL-22 were observed in the cultured supernatants of VL patients' PBMCs, compared to the controls. Upon treatment, Th22 and IL-6 were down-regulated and conversely, IL-21, IL-22, IL-23 and IL-33 were significantly up-regulated in the patients' blood at different time points. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis indicated that for the differential diagnosis of VL, plasma IL-21 is more sensitive and specific than Th22 and the above mentioned cytokines. The higher proportions of Th22 and IL-21 in the VL patients and their alterations post treatment confer their roles in the immunopathogenesis of VL. So, Th22 and IL-21 in the patients' blood can be considered as biomarkers to be used for the differential diagnosis of VL. Nevertheless, further studies are warranted to clarify their particular mechanisms in this process. The pleiotropic cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) is emerging as a molecule with both beneficial and destructive potentials. It can exert opposing actions triggering either neuron survival after injury or causing neurodegeneration and cell death in neurodegenerative or neuropathic disorders. learn more Importantly, neurons respond differently to IL-6 and this critically depends on their environment and whether they are located in the peripheral or the central nervous system. In addition to its hub regulator role in inflammation, IL-6 is recently emerging as an important regulator of neuron function in health and disease, offering exciting possibilities for more mechanistic insight into the pathogenesis of mental, neurodegenerative and pain disorders and for developing novel therapies for diseases with neuroimmune and neurogenic pathogenic components.
