Inbuilt toughening and secure crack dissemination within hexagonal boron nitride.
80 ± 0.92 μg⋅g-1 dry weight (dw)); the Lesser black-backed gull had intermediate concentrations (0.61 ± 0.18 μg⋅g-1 dw); and the European herring gull had the lowest (0.37 ± 0.26 μg⋅g-1 dw). Individuals with the highest trophic position showed consistently the highest Hg concentrations. The positive relationship between Hg concentrations and the feeding habitat (marine vs terrestrial) indicated that the main source of Hg for gulls in the English Channel is marine prey. This exposure led to relatively high Hg concentrations in Great black-backed gull, which may produce toxic effects to individuals with potential consequences for their populations. The sharp redox gradient at soil-water interfaces (SWI) plays a key role in controlling arsenic (As) translocation and transformation in paddy soils. When Eh drops, As is released to porewater from solid iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) minerals and reduced to arsenite. However, the coupling or decoupling processes operating within the redox gradient at the SWI in flooded paddy soils remain poorly constrained due to the lack of direct evidence. In this paper, we reported the mm-scale mapping of Fe, As and other associated elements across the redox gradient in the SWI of five different paddy soils. The results showed a strong positive linear relationship between dissolved Fe, Mn, As, and phosphorus (P) in 4 out of the 5 paddy soils, indicating the general coupling of these elements. However, decoupling of Fe, Mn and As was observed in one of the paddy soils. In this soil, distinct releasing profiles of Mn, As and Fe were observed, and the releasing order followed the redox ladder. Further investigation of As species showed the ratio of arsenite to total As dropped from 100% to 75.5% and then kept stable along depth of the soil profile, which indicates a dynamic equilibrium between arsenite oxidization and arsenate reduction. This study provides direct evidence of multi-elements' interaction along redox gradient of SWI in paddy soils.A quality-assured ecological risk assessment (ERA) requires enormous resources (time and labor) in collection/assessment of hazard data, as well as considerable expertise to interpret the risk. The ERA of chemicals is thereby considered difficult or impossible for those with little assessment experience and cumbersome or complicated for practitioners. To meet the concerns regarding ERA and accelerate the risk assessment and management of chemicals, we developed an all-in-one free tool for multi-purpose ecological risk assessment management (MeRAM) of chemical substances in aquatic environment called the AIST-MeRAM Ver. 2.0.0 (Copyright No H28PRO-2007). It allows users from beginners to experts to conduct ERA without any preparation because all the necessary ecotoxicity test data and methodologies are available in the system. Approximately 270,000 ecotoxicity test data points for 3900 chemical substances together with the scientific methodologies from traditional simple hazard quotient (HQ) to more ecologically relevant complicated assessments such as species sensitivity distribution (SSD) and population-level assessment are embedded in the AIST-MeRAM. In addition, users can easily understand the Japanese regulatory RA and management of chemical substances due to a special function based on the Japanese Chemical Substance Control Law (CSCL). Here, we demonstrate a tiered ERA using the embedded sample data to evaluate and ensure the functions of AIST-MERAM. We show that the AIST-MeRAM can provide a comprehensive and accurate ERA, suggesting that it is a powerful IT solution for cumbersome ERA.The environment is contaminated by synthetic contaminants owing to their extensive applications globally. Hence, the removal of synthetic pollutants (SPs) from the environment has received widespread attention. Different remediation technologies have been investigated for their abilities to eliminate SPs from the ecosystem; these include photocatalysis, sonochemical techniques, nanoremediation, and bioremediation. SPs, which can be organic or inorganic, can be degraded by microbial metabolism at contaminated sites. selleckchem Owing to their diverse metabolisms, microbes can adapt to a wide variety of environments. Several microbial strains have been reported for their bioremediation potential concerning synthetic chemical compounds. The selection of potential strains for large-scale removal of organic pollutants is an important research priority. Additionally, novel microbial consortia have been found to be capable of efficient degradation owing to their combined and co-metabolic activities. Microbial engineering is one of the most prominent and promising techniques for providing new opportunities to develop proficient microorganisms for various biological processes; here, we have targeted the SP-degrading mechanisms of microorganisms. This review provides an in-depth discussion of microbial engineering techniques that are used to enhance the removal of both organic and inorganic pollutants from different contaminated environments and under different conditions. The degradation of these pollutants is investigated using abiotic and biotic approaches; interestingly, biotic approaches based on microbial methods are preferable owing to their high potential for pollutant removal and cost-effectiveness.
The associations between ambient NO
and diabetes and dyslipidemia have been controversial, and data is especially lacking in developing countries.

This study aimed to assess the associations of long-term exposure to NO
with diabetes and dyslipidemia in China.

We conducted a cross-sectional study including 13,013 participants from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHRLS). The annual average concentrations of NO
were estimated based on the residential addresses of participants. We applied logistic regression models to evaluate the associations of NO
with diabetes and dyslipidemia, and linear regression models to assess the associations with blood biomarkers.

A total of 1933 diabetes cases (14.85%) and 1935 (14.87%) dyslipidemia cases were identified. Significant associations were observed between NO
and risk of diabetes and dyslipidemia independent of PM
and O
. For an interquartile range (IQR) increase in NO
(12.39μg/m
), we observed a 13% [odds ratio (OR) 1.13; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.
