Capacitance-based automatic urine measurement is a validated technique already implemented in clinical practice. However, albuminuria and free hemoglobinuria cause progressive biofilm buildup on the capacitance sensors of the urinometers. The aim of this experimental study is to investigate the influence of albumin and free hemoglobin on the capacitance signal of an automatic urinometer with and without the addition of silicone oil. A solution of Ringer's acetate mixed with either albumin or free hemoglobin was run through an automatic urinometer containing either a water-soluble capsule with silicone oil or not. In total, around 500 capacitance measurements were retrieved from the albumin and free hemoglobin group, respectively. The mean increase in capacitance in the albumin 3 g/L group was 257 ± 100 pF without and 105 ± 30 pF with silicone oil, respectively, during 24 h. After ten hours of recording, differences between the two albumin groups reached statistical significance. For the free hemoglobin groups (0.01 g/L), the mean increase in capacitance was 190 ± 170 pF with silicone oil, and 324 ± 80 pF without, with a significant difference between the groups after 20 h and onwards. learn more Coating of the capacitance measurement membrane of the automatic urinometer by albumin or free hemoglobin was significantly decreased by silicone oil, prolonging the functionality of the device. We investigated whether low transformation temperature (LTT) welding materials are beneficial to the generation of compressive residual stress around a weld zone, thus enhancing the fatigue performance of the welded joint. An experimental and numerical study were conducted in order to analyze the residual stress in multi-pass T-welded joints using LTT welding wire. It was found that, compared to the conventional welded joint, greater tensile residual stress was induced in the flange plate of the LTT welded joints. This was attributed to the reheat temperature of the LTT weld pass during the multi-pass welding. The formerly-formed LTT weld pass with a reheat temperature lower than the austenite finish temperature converted the compressive residual stress into tensile stress. learn more The compressive residual stress was generated in the regions with a reheat temperature higher than the austenite finish temperature, indicating that LTT welding materials are more suitable for single-pass welding.Chronic kidney disease (CKD) results in the impaired filtration of metabolites, which may be toxic or harmful to organs/tissues. The objective of this study was to perform unbiased 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based metabolomics profiling of tissues from mice with CKD. Five-month-old male C57BL6J mice were placed on either a casein control diet or adenine-supplemented diet to induce CKD for 24 weeks. CKD was confirmed by significant increases in blood urea nitrogen (24.1 ± 7.7 vs. 105.3 ± 18.3 mg/dL, p less then 0.0001) in adenine-fed mice. Following this chronic adenine diet, the kidney, heart, liver, and quadriceps muscles were rapidly dissected; snap-frozen in liquid nitrogen; and the metabolites were extracted. Metabolomic profiling coupled with multivariate analyses confirm clear separation in both aqueous and organic phases between control and CKD mice. link2 Severe energetic stress and apparent impaired mitochondrial metabolism were observed in CKD kidneys evidenced by the depletion of ATP and NAD+, along with significant alterations in tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle intermediates. learn more Altered amino acid metabolism was observed in all tissues, although significant differences in specific amino acids varied across tissue types. link2 Taken together, this study provides a metabolomics fingerprint of multiple tissues from mice with and without severe CKD induced by chronic adenine feeding.N-alkyl phosphoranimines were synthesized via the Staudinger reaction of four different alkyl azides with tris(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) phosphite. N-adamantyl, N-benzyl, N-t-butyl, and N-trityl phosphoranimines were thoroughly characterized and evaluated as chain-capping compounds in the anionic polymerization of P-tris(2,2,2-trifluoroethoxy)-N-trimethylsilyl phosphoranimine monomer. All four compounds reacted with the active chain ends in a bulk polymerization, and the alkyl end groups were identified by 1H-NMR spectroscopy. These compounds effectively controlled the molecular weight of the resulting polyphosphazenes. link3 The chain transfer constants for the monomer and N-benzyl phosphoranimine were determined using Mayo equation.A number of urinary bladder urothelial carcinoma (UB UC) mRNA-based classification systems have been reported. It also has been observed that treatment response and prognosis are different for each molecular subtype. In this study, cytokeratin (CK)5/6 and CK20 immunohistochemistry (IHC) were performed, and IHC-based subgroup classification was applied. UB UC was classified into CK5/6 single-positive (SP), CK20 SP, double-positive (DP) and double-negative (DN) subgroups, and transcriptional analysis was performed. The results of gene ontology (GO) terms and functional analysis using differentially expressed genes indicate that, CK5/6 SP and DP subgroups were enriched in cell migration, immune activation, interleukin 6-Janus kinase-signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (IL6-JAK-STAT3) signaling pathway and tumor necrosis factor-α signaling via the nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) signaling pathway signature gene. In addition, compared with the other subgroups, the DN subgroup showed inhibited cell movement, cell migration, and cell activation. Furthermore, in survival analysis, the CK5/6 SP subgroup was significantly associated with poor progression-free survival (p = 0.008). link3 The results of our study indicate that the CK5/6 positive subgroup exhibited high gene expression signature related to aggressive behavior and exhibited worse clinical outcome.Polymeric nanomaterials that degrade in acidic environments have gained considerable attention in nanomedicine for intracellular drug delivery and cancer therapy. Among various acid-degradable linkages, spirocyclic acetals have rarely been used to fabricate such vehicles. In addition to acid sensitivity, they benefit from conformational rigidity that is otherwise not attainable by their non-spirocyclic analogs. Herein, amphiphilic spirocyclic polyacetals are synthesized by Cu-catalyzed alkyne-azide "click" polymerization. Unlike conventional block copolymers, which often form core-shell structures, these polymers self-assemble to form core amphiphilic assemblies capable of encapsulating Nile red as a hydrophobic model drug. In vitro experiments show that while release from these materials can occur at neutral pH with preservation of their integrity, acidic pH accelerates efficient cargo release and leads to the complete degradation of assemblies. Moreover, cellular assays reveal that these materials are fully cytocompatible, interact with the plasma membrane, and can be internalized by cells, rendering them as potential candidates for cancer therapy and/or drug delivery. This study aimed to compare mental health in people with cardiovascular or metabolic diseases and the general adult population in each gender. Cardiovascular and metabolic diseases affect mental health, and the prognosis and incidence rates of these diseases differ by age. To date, studies comparing mental health in adults with cardiovascular or metabolic diseases by gender and with the general population have been insufficient. This work is a cross-sectional study. Data from 9828 men and 13,389 women aged 19 years or older from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey V and VI (2010-2013) were used. Men and women with cardiovascular diseases showed high risks of stress, depression, and suicidal ideation. Men with metabolic diseases had worse mental health in relation to depression and suicidal ideation, and women with metabolic diseases in relation to stress and depression, indicating a need for intervention and management of mental health by gender for these individuals. There is a need to develop a clear perception and understanding, both among practitioners and the general population, of mental health issues associated with having cardiovascular or metabolic diseases. Active, specific health improvement and training programmes considering gender differences are necessary.Although there have been many advances in recent years for the treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC), it still remains the third most common cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Many patients with late stage CRC display resistance to multiple different therapeutics. An important aspect in developing effective therapeutics for CRC patients is understanding the interactions that take place in the tumor microenvironment (TME), as it has been shown to contribute to drug resistance in vivo. Much research over the past 100 years has focused on 2D monolayer cultures or in vivo studies, however, the efficacy in translating these to the clinic is very low. link2 More recent studies are turning towards developing an effective 3D model of CRC that is clinically relevant, that can recapitulate the TME in vitro and bridge the gap between 2D cultures and in vivo studies, with the aim of reducing the use of animal models in the future. This review summarises the advantages and limitations of different 3D CRC models. It emphasizes how different 3D models may be optimised to study cellular and extracellular interactions that take place in the TME of CRC in an effort to allow the development of more translatable effective treatment options for patients.Thanatosis, also called death feigning, is often an antipredator behavior. In insects, it has been reported from species of various orders, but knowledge of this behavior in Hymenoptera is insufficient. This study examined the effects of sex, age (0 or 2 days old), temperature (18 or 25 °C), and background color (white, green, or brown) on thanatosis in the braconid parasitoid wasp Heterospilus prosopidis. Thanatosis was more frequent in 0-d-old individuals and in females at 18 °C. The duration of thanatosis was longer in females, but this effect of sex was weaker at 18 °C and in 0-d-old individuals. The background color affected neither the frequency nor duration. link3 These results were compared with reports for other insects and predictions based on the life history of this species, and are discussed from an ecological perspective.Cervical cancer represents one of the leading causes of cancer-related death in women all over the world. The infection with human papilloma virus (HPV) is one of the major risk factors for the development of premalignant lesions, which will progress to cervical cancer. Seaweeds are marine organisms with increased contents of bioactive compounds, which are described as potential anti-HPV and anti-cervical cancer agents. Our study aims to bring together all the results of the previous studies, conducted in order to highlight the potency of bioactive molecules from seaweeds, as anti-HPV and anti-cervical agents. This paper is a review of the English literature published between January 2010 and August 2020. We performed a systematic study in the Google Academic and PubMed databases using the key words "HPV infection", "anticancer", "seaweeds", "cervical cancer" and "carcinogenesis process", aiming to evaluate the effects of different bioactive molecules from marine algae on cervical cancer cell lines and on HPV-infected cells.
