To establish the Size Specific Dose Estimate (SSDE) typical values for pediatric head CT examinations based on the AAPM report TG-293; to provide a new stratification based on the water-equivalent diameter (D
), given that SSDE is related to the head size.

296 Head CT scans of pediatric patients collected using a dose monitoring software were retrospectively analysed. Typical values were derived stratifying data by age in three methods the first proposed by the European Guidelines on Diagnostic Reference Levels for Pediatric Imaging (RP185), the second by the National Istisan Report 20/22 and a local one related to the clinical protocols (LStrata). For each scan, a self-developed Matlab routine calculated the water-equivalent diameter (D
) and related SSDE values with the conversion factors f
and f
provided by the AAPM reports TG-293 and TG-204, respectively. Eventually, a D
stratification was introduced starting from a measure of the lateral dimension of the head.

SSDE based on TG-204 overestimatesthe dose up to 12%. Four D
groups were identified thanks to the good correlation between the head lateral dimension andD
D
<14cm, 14≤D
<16cm, 16≤D
< 17cm, D
≥ 17cm. The D
-stratified dosimetric indices presentgreater variability than those grouped by age because of the large variability of the size of the infant's head.

The variability of the SSDE metric underlines that age-optimized protocols are not when size is considered.

One possible solution is to coat the alloy with a hydroxyapatite (HA) layer to slow the corrosion and promote bone growth. As such coatings can be under severe stresses during implant insertion, we present a nano-mechanical and nano-tribological investigation of RF-sputtered HA films on AZ31 Mg alloy substrates. EDX and XRD analysis indicate that as-deposited coatings are amorphous and Ca-deficient whereas rapid thermal annealing results in c-axis orientation and near-stoichiometric composition. Analysis of the nanoindentation data using a thin film model shows that annealing increases the coating's intrinsic hardness (H) and strain at break (H/E) values, from 2.7 GPa to 9.4 GPa and from 0.043 to 0.079, respectively. In addition, despite being rougher, the annealed samples display better wear resistance; a sign that the rapid thermal annealing does not compromise their interfacial strength and that these systems have potential for resorbable bone implant applications. In the southern of China, precipitation is abundant during the grape growing season, which results in lower sugar content, and finally reduces the quality and yield of grape berries and leads to lower economic benefits. The root restriction cultivation method is an important abiotic stress that limits the disordered growth and development of roots, and it favors the accumulation of sugar and abscisic acid. However, the relationship between ABA and sugar accumulation under root restriction remains unclear. Here, we tested the expression levels of several transcription factors and sugar metabolism-related genes and found that root restriction cultivation could induce higher expression of VvMYB15 and VvSWEET15. The VvMYB15 transcription factor was found to bind to the promoter of VvSWEET15 and activate its expression, furthermore, transient overexpression of VvMYB15 in strawberry fruits and grape berries can promote sugar accumulation and increase the expression level of sugar metabolism-related genes, indicating that VvMYB15 is a positive regulator of sugar accumulation. In addition, the endogenous ABA content and expression level of VvGRIP55, which is highly responsive to ABA, were significantly increased under root restriction, and VvGRIP55 could bind to the promoter of VvMYB15 and activate its expression. Therefore, our results demonstrated that the ABA-responsive factor VvGRIP55 can promote sugar accumulation through VvMYB15 and VvSWEET15, suggesting a mechanism by which ABA regulates sugar accumulation under root restriction.Groundwater discharge is an essential process in the functioning of coastal aquatic ecosystems due to its significant role in nutrient cycling, geochemical mass balances and primary productivity. However, the occurrence patterns, importance, and effects of this discharge on rocky shores communities remain largely unknown. We assessed the importance of groundwater discharge into the highly ecologically important intertidal ecosystems. We compared the benthic macroinvertebrate composition and abundance between discharge and no-discharge sites, replicated for five shores in South and Southwest Portugal. This robust replicated feature across shores and regions is a particularly novel contribution to the field. Groundwater discharge significantly affected the biological communities' abundance across all shores, but not biodiversity patterns. The algae Enteromorpha sp., snail Melaraphe neritoides and lichen Verrucaria maura can potentially be used as bioindication tools for shifts in groundwater discharge quantity and qualitative patterns. Our study validates the importance of this commonly overlooked local disturbance factor in regulating intertidal communities.Reactive astrocytes are commonly activated in the spinal dorsal horn (SDH) of various animal models of pathological pain. Previous investigations suggest an association between astrogliosis and pain pathogenesis. However, our understanding of the mechanisms underlying astrogliosis activation and the contributions of reactive astrocytes to pain neural circuit malfunction is rudimentary. This short review highlights recent advances in these areas. The contribution of cognition to the sleep-aggression relationship is explored via three connected studies, involving adult male forensic patients detained in a high secure hospital. Study 1 included 31 patients, interviewed to examine their experiences of specific sleep problems. In Study 2, 42 patients completed a series of measures examining sleep dysfunction, aggression, and cognition, while Study 3 was designed to impact on sleep via a cognitive approach. In the latter, 48 patients were randomly assigned as part of a feasibility trial to one of three conditions mindfulness (cognitive approach), sleep education, and treatment as usual. Collectively, the studies demonstrated the multifaceted nature of cognition in the sleep-aggression relationship, with a need to account fully for cognitive factors. A preliminary conceptual model is outlined - the Cognitive Sleep Model for Aggression and Self Harm (CoSMASH), as a direction for future research to consider.2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) is an emerging toxic organic pollutant widely detected in territorial waters. Accordingly, establishing the seawater quality criteria (SWQC) for BDE-47 is of significant importance to protect the marine ecosystems. In this study, published ecotoxicity data of BDE-47 to aquatic species in China were collected, and acute and chronic toxicity tests were carried out on saltwater aquatic organisms from 5 phyla and 8 families widely existed in the Chinese marine environment. Static acute toxicity tests and renewed chronic toxicity tests were adopted. The scientific theories and technical methods of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), Canada, the European Union (EU), and the Netherlands on water quality criteria guidelines, as well as the Chinese freshwater quality criteria guidelines were compared. Then an integrated method of SWQC derivation was introduced through comprehensive consideration. Afterward, the SWQC of BDE-47 was derived based on the ecotoxicity data. The SWQC includes short-term seawater quality criteria (S-SWQC), long-term seawater quality criteria (L-SWQC), and serious risk concentration for the ecosystem (SRCeco). And they were derived and recommended as 7.90 μg/L, 0.217 μg/L, and 3.65 μg/L, respectively. Selleck STF-083010 This study served as a specific example to quantitatively studies the differences between different scientific theories and technique methods. The derivation process and improvement of SWQC for BDE-47 provide support for the future revision of water quality criteria in China.
In December 2021, the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant displaced the Delta variant and caused an unprecedented spike in the numbers of COVID-19 cases. This study reports the positivity rates of circulating non-SARS-CoV-2 respiratory viruses and evaluates coinfections of these viruses with SARS-CoV-2 during the Omicron surge.

Data from the multiplex respiratory panels used for diagnosis at the Johns Hopkins Microbiology Laboratory were used to assess positivity rates and respiratory virus coinfections in the time frame between November 2021 and February 2022. Clinical presentations and outcomes were assessed in the cohort of 46 patients who had SARS-CoV-2 coinfections with other respiratory viruses.

Between November 2021 and February 2022, the high positivity of SARS-CoV-2 outcompeted enterovirus/rhinovirus and other circulating respiratory viruses and was associated with a notable decrease in influenza A infections. Coinfections represented 2.3% of the samples tested by the extended multiplex respiratory panel. SARS-COV-2 coinfections represented 25% of the coinfections in this time frame and were mostly SARS-COV-2/enterovirus/rhinovirus. Of the SARS-CoV-2 coinfection cohort, 3 patients were hospitalized and were coinfected with influenza-A (2) or RSV (1). Cough and shortness of breath were the most frequent symptoms (29%) followed by fever (28%).

The SARS-CoV-2 Omicron surge was associated with a change in the circulation of other respiratory viruses. Coinfections were most prevalent with viruses that showed the highest positivity in this time frame.

We assessed the effect of neurodegeneration on brain systems reorganization in early sv-PPA, using advanced brain metabolic connectivity approaches. Forty-four subjects with sv-PPA and forty-four age-matched healthy controls (HC) were included. We applied two multivariate approaches to [18F]FDG-PET data - i.e., sparse inverse covariance estimation and seed-based interregional correlation analysis - to assess the integrity of (i) the whole-brain metabolic connectivity and (ii) the connectivity of brain regions relevant for cognitive and behavioral functions. Whole-brain analysis revealed a global-scale connectivity reconfiguration in sv-PPA, with widespread changes in metabolic connections of frontal, temporal, and parietal regions. In comparison to HC, the seed-based analysis revealed a) functional isolation of the left anterior temporal lobe (ATL), b) decreases in temporo-occipital connections and contralateral homologous regions, c) connectivity increases to the dorsal parietal cortex from the spared posterior temporal cortex, d) a disruption of the large-scale limbic brain networks.
