3%. The mean age of the participants was 22.13 years with a standard deviation of ± 2.176, and 172 (58.7%) were males. The prevalence of SAD was 32.8%. Family history of mental illness (AOR=4.72, 95% CI (1.25, 17.74)), being a 3rd-year student (AOR=0.178, 95% CI (0.055, 0.57)) and being a 4th year student (AOR=0.15, 95% CI (0.049, 0.49)) were significantly associated with SAD. Conclusion This study showed a high prevalence of SAD among medicine and health science students of Hawassa University. Therefore, the Ethiopian Ministry of Higher Education and university officials need to draw up a plan to reduce social phobia. © 2020 Reta et al.Introduction Currently, the unsatisfactory treatment of cardiac hypertrophy is due to the unbridled myocardial fibrosis. Melatonin has been demonstrated to ameliorate cardiac hypertrophy and its accompanied fibrosis in previous studies. But it is not clinically appealing due to its short-lasting time against the hostile microenvironment when administered orally. Methods Herein, to address this, poly (lactide) polycarboxybetaine (PLGA-COOH) accompanied by cardiac homing peptide (CHP) and superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) were used to establish a novel drug delivery and transportation strategy for melatonin via a facile two-step emulsion method. This study characterized these nanoparticles (CHP-mel@SPIONs) and tested their delivery to the hypertrophied heart and their effect on myocardial hypertrophy and fibrosis in an animal model of pressure overload-induced cardiac hypertrophy. Results The engineered magnetic nanoparticles of CHP-mel@SPIONs were spherical (diameter = 221 ± 13 nm) and had a negative zeta potential of -19.18 ± 3.27 mV. The CHP-mel@SPIONs displayed excellent drug encapsulation capacities of SPIONs (75.27 ± 3.1%) and melatonin (77.69 ± 6.04%) separately, and their magnetic properties were characterized by constructing magnetic hysteresis curves and exhibited no remnant magnetization or coercivity. The animal experiments showed that compared with mel@SPIONs, CHP-mel@SPIONs accumulated more in the heart, especially in the presence of an external magnetic field, with in vivo echocardiography and RT-PCR and histological assessments confirming the amelioration of the myocardial hypertrophy and fibrosis with low drug doses. Conclusion This simple biocompatible dual-targeting nanoagent may be a potential candidate for the guided clinical therapy of heart disease. © 2020 Zhao et al.Background Aptamers have been widely used as targeted therapeutic agents due to its relatively small physical size, flexible structure, high specificity, and selectivity. Aptamers functionalized nanomaterials, not only enhance the targeting of nanomaterials, but can also improve the stability of the aptamers. Tanespimycin concentration We developed aptamer C2NP (Apt) conjugated straight DNA nanotubes (S-DNT-Apt) and twisted DNA nanotubes (T-DNT-Apt) as nanocarriers for doxorubicin (DOX). Methods The twisted DNA nanotubes (T-DNT) and straight DNA nanotubes (S-DNT) were assembled with a scaffold and hundreds of staples. Apt was site-specifically anchored on DNA nanotubes with either different spatial distribution (3 or 6 nm) or varied stoichiometry (15Apt or 30Apt). The developed nanocarriers were characterized with agarose gel electrophoresis and transmission electron microscopy. The drug loading and release in vitro were evaluated by measuring the fluorescence intensity of DOX using a microplate reader. The stability of DNT in cell culay be a solution for the synergistic treatment of cancer. © 2020 Chen et al.Introduction Stem cell therapies for neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease (PD) are intended to replace lost dopaminergic neurons. The basis of this treatment is to guide the migration of transplanted cells into the target tissue or injury site. The aim of this study is an evaluation of the homing of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) labeled adipose-derived stem cells (ADSC) by an external magnetic field in a rat model of PD. Methods ADSCs were obtained from perinephric regions of male adult rats and cultured in a DMEM medium. ADSC markers were assessed by immunostaining with CD90, CD105, CD49d, and CD45. The SPION was coated using poly-L-lysine hydrobromide and transfection was determined in rat ADSC using the GFP reporter gene. For this in vivo study, rats with PD were divided into five groups a positive control group, a control group with PD (lesion with 6-HD injection), and three treatment groups the PD/ADSC group (PD transplant with ADSCs transfected by BrdU), PD/ADSC/SPION group (PD transplant with ADSCs labeled with SPION and transfected by GFP), and the PD/ADSC/SPION/EM group (PD transplant with ADSCs labeled with SPION and transfected by GFP induced with external magnet). Results ADSCs were immunoreactive to fat markers CD90 (90.73±1.7), CD105 (87.4±2.9) and CD49d (79.6±2.6), with negative immunostaining at the hematopoietic stem cell marker (CD45 1.4±0.4). The efficiency of cells with SPION/PLL was about 96% of ADSC. The highest number of GFP-positive cells was in the ADSC/SPION/EM group (54.5±1.3), which was significantly different from that in ADSC/SPION group (30.83±3 and P less then 0.01). Conclusion Transfection of ADSC by SPION/PLL is an appropriate protocol for cell therapy. External magnets can be used for the delivery and homing of transplanted stem cells in the target tissue. © 2020 Moayeri et al.Background Cervical cancer stem cells (CCSCs) represent a subpopulation of tumor cells that possess self-renewal capacity and numerous intrinsic mechanisms of resistance to conventional chemotherapy and radiotherapy. These cells play a crucial role in relapse and metastasis of cervical cancer. Therefore, eradication of CCSCs is the primary objective in cervical cancer therapy. Salinomycin (Sal) is an agent used for the elimination of cancer stem cells (CSCs); however, the occurrence of several side effects hinders its application. Nanoscale drug-delivery systems offer great promise for the diagnosis and treatment of tumors. These systems can be used to reduce the side effects of Sal and improve clinical benefit. Methods Sal-loaded polyethylene glycol-peptide-polycaprolactone nanoparticles (Sal NPs) were fabricated under mild and non-toxic conditions. The real-time biodistribution of Sal NPs was investigated through non-invasive near-infrared fluorescent imaging. The efficacy of tumor growth inhibition by Sal NPs was evaluated using tumor xenografts in nude mice.
