Panchromatic molecules, e. g. organic small molecules with wide absorption spectra, are very desirable for solar energy-related applications. Here, we report the development of a series of organoboron compounds composed of an organoboron core unit, two π-bridging units and two electron-withdrawing end-capping units. Increasing the electron-withdrawing capability of the core units results in a downshifted HOMO level as well as blueshifted long-wavelength absorption band with increased extinction coefficient. Extending the π-bridging units causes an increased HOMO level and blueshifted long-wavelength absorption band with increased extinction coefficients. Weakening the electron-withdrawing capability of the end-capping units leads to an upshifted LUMO level and blueshifted long-wavelength absorption peak with decreased extinction coefficient. This work provides insight into the absorption spectrum manipulation of panchromatic molecules and would pave the way for the development of solar energy-related applications.Hydrozoan colonies display a variety of shapes and sizes including encrusting, upright, and pelagic forms. Phylogenetic patterns reveal a complex evolutionary history of these distinct colony forms, as well as colony loss. Within a species, phenotypic variation in colonies as a response to changing environmental cues and resources has been documented. The patterns of branching of colony specific tissue, called stolons in encrusting colonies and stalks in upright colonies, are likely under the control of signaling mechanisms whose changing expression in evolution and development are responsible for the diversity of hydrozoan colony forms. Although mechanisms of polyp development have been well studied, little research has focused on colony development and patterning. In the few studies that investigated mechanisms governing colony patterning, the Wnt signaling pathway has been implicated. The diversity of colony form, evolutionary patterns, and mechanisms of colony variation in Hydrozoa are reviewed here.Heterotypic interactions between tumor cells and macrophages can enable tumor progression and hold potential for the development of therapeutic interventions. However, the communication between tumors and macrophages and its mechanism are poorly understood. Here, we find that tumor-associated macrophages (TAM) from tumor-bearing mice have high amounts of lipid as compared to macrophages from tumor-free mice. TAM also present high lipid content in clinical human gastric cancer patients. Functionally, TAM with high lipid levels are characterized by polarized M2-like profiling, and exhibit decreased phagocytic potency and upregulated programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression, blocking anti-tumor T cell responses to support their immunosuppressive function. Mechanistically, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis identifies the specific PI3K pathway enriched within lipid-laid TAM. Lipid accumulation in TAM is mainly caused by increased uptake of extracellular lipids from tumor cells, which leads to the upregulated expression of gamma isoform of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K-γ) polarizing TAM to M2-like profiling. Correspondingly, a preclinical gastric cancer model is used to show pharmacological targeting of PI3K-γ in high-lipid TAM with a selective inhibitor, IPI549. IPI549 restores the functional activity of macrophages and substantially enhances the phagocytosis activity and promotes cytotoxic-T-cell-mediated tumor regression. Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is suggested to be likely associated with underlying immunological dysregulation. This lymphopenia poses a risk of viral infection. Data to elucidate the herpes virus infection risk in patients with PKD are lacking; therefore, we conducted a national-wide population-based cohort study to investigate the herpes virus risk in PKD patients.

From the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD), patients who were hospitalised with a diagnosis of polycystic kidney disease were defined as case group of PKD patients; patients without any diagnosis of PKD during the study period were grouped into the non-PKD cohort. The index date was set as the date when the patients were newly diagnosed with PKD. All study patients were followed up until the occurrence of herpes zoster infection, death, withdrawal from the NHIRD for other reasons, or until December 31, 2013.

We included 4366 PKD patients and 4366 non-PKD patients. The incidence rate and the risk of developing herpes zoster infection were estimated using multivariate stratified analyses. PKD patients had a 1.97-fold risk of herpes zoster virus infection (aHR=1.97, 95% CI 1.17-3.31) compared with the non-PKD cohort. On multilayer stratification, PKD patients without any comorbidities had a significantly increased risk of herpes zoster infection (aHR=3.10, 95% CI 1.37-7.00).

To address this issue, we piloted a comprehensive ultrasound telediagnostic system, which uses ultrasound volume sweep imaging (VSI) acquisitions capable of being performed by operators without prior traditional ultrasound training and new telemedicine software capable of sending imaging acquisitions asynchronously over low Internet bandwidth for remote interpretation. The telediagnostic system was tested with obstetric, right upper quadrant abdominal, and thyroid volume sweep imaging protocols in Peru. Scans obtained by operators without prior ultrasound experience were sent for remote interpretation by specialists using the telemedicine platform. Scans obtained allowed visualization of the target region in 96% of cases with diagnostic imaging quality. This telediagnostic system shows promise in improving health care disparities in the developing world.An efficient cascade reaction of tryptamine-derived isocyanides with C,N-cyclic azomethine imines is described. Invasive imaging techniques have been applied for lymphedema (LE) assessment; noncontrast MR lymphography (NCMLR) has potential as an alternative, but its performance is not known in secondary lower limb LE.

Three radiologists assessed the following characteristics on NCMRL honeycomb pattern, dermal thickening, muscular abnormalities, distal dilated lymphatics, inguinal lymph node number, appearance of iliac lymphatic trunks. The relationship between imaging findings and clinical staging was evaluated, as well as between dermal backflow at lymphoscintigraphy and MR staging, and between the limb swelling duration and peripheral lymphatics dilatation.

We present a fluorescence spectroscopic analysis of the singlet-oxygen formation activity of commercial peroxidases and novel peroxygenases. Singlet-oxygen sensor green (SOSG) is used as fluorogenic singlet oxygen trap. Establishing a kinetic model for the reaction cascade to the fluorescent SOSG endoperoxide permits a kinetic analysis of enzymatic singlet-oxygen formation. All peroxidases and peroxygenases show singlet-oxygen formation. No singlet oxygen activity could be found for any catalase under investigation. Substrate inhibition is observed for all reactive enzymes. The commercial dye-decolorizing peroxidase industrially used for dairy bleaching shows the highest singlet-oxygen activity and the lowest inhibition. This enzyme was immobilized on a textile carrier and successfully applied for a chemical synthesis. Here, ascaridole was synthesized via enzymatically produced singlet oxygen.
Our objectives were to assess the quality of life (QoL) of parents of childhood leukemia survivors compared with population norms and to identify the determinants of parents' long-term QoL.

Parents of minors who had survived childhood leukemia participating in the French LEA cohort (Leucémie de l'Enfant et de l'Adolescent-French Childhood Cancer Survivor Study for Leukemia) were asked to complete the French version of the WHOQOL-BREF. Results were compared with age- and sex-matched values from a French reference population. Parents' and survivors' characteristics likely to be associated with QoL, long after the child's leukemia diagnosis, were explored using multivariate analysis.

We included 487 parents (mean age 42.9 ± 6.0 years, mean follow-up time from diagnosis 7.3 ± 3.3 years).
