Most provider-focused educational interventions are focused on physicians, even though nurses are also important sources of vaccine-related information for their patients. This study examined whether a HPV educational intervention could improve nursing students' HPV knowledge, beliefs, and comfort with counseling. The same lecture on HPV and HPV vaccination was given to both medical and nursing students. To determine the effects of the lecture, students were asked to complete identical pre- and post-lecture tests with questions on demographics, knowledge, attitudes, and comfort with counseling on the HPV vaccine. Pre- and post-lecture test scores were compared between nursing and medical students to assess whether there were differences in pre-lecture test scores and/or changes in post-lecture test scores. On the pre-lecture tests, fewer nursing students responded correctly to knowledge questions, indicated positive attitudes or comfort with counseling about the HPV vaccine compared to medical students. However, similar frequencies of nursing and medical students responded correctly to knowledge questions and indicated a positive attitude, as well as a high comfort level with counseling on the post-lecture tests. Study results show that integrating lectures in a nursing program curriculum could be a feasible way to increase students' HPV knowledge. Having health-care providers with similar levels of knowledge, attitudes, and comfort with counseling on HPV vaccination is ideal, as all share the responsibility of recommending the vaccine to patients.
Maternal and newborn child health are priority concerns in Bauchi State, northern Nigeria. Increased male involvement in reproductive health is recommended by the World Health Organization. A trial of a program of universal home visits to pregnant women and their spouses, with an intention to increase male involvement in pregnancy and childbirth, showed improvements in actionable risk factors and in maternal morbidity. We used a narrative technique to explore experiences of the visits and their effect on gender roles and dynamics within the households.
Trained fieldworkers collected narratives of change from 23 visited women and 21 visited men. After translation of the stories into English, we conducted an inductive thematic analysis to examine the impact of the visits on gender norms and dynamics.
The analysis indicated that the visits improved men's support for antenatal care, immunization, and seeking help for danger signs, increased spousal communication, and led to changes in perceptions about gender violence and promoted non-violent gender relationships. However, although some stories described increased spousal communication, they did not mention that this translated into shared decision-making or increased autonomy for women. Many of the men's stories described a continuing paternalistic, male-dominant position in decision-making.

Typically treated with chemotherapy, leukaemia remains a major death cause in people under 20 years old. Understanding molecularly altered pathways in T-ALL may lead to new therapeutic avenues in the future. Ras pathway dysregulation is common in T-ALL. We have shown elevated expression levels of the Ras guanine nucleotide exchange factor RasGRP1 in T-ALL patients, which results in constant production of active Ras (RasGTP). When leukaemia cell lines are exposed to cytokines, RasGTP levels further increase in a RasGRP1-dependent manner. How overexpressed RasGRP1 may impact primary BM cells has remained unknown. We recently published a new RoLoRiG mouse model that allows for pIpC-induced overexpression of RasGRP1 in haematopoietic cells, which can be traced with an ires-EGFP cassette. This novel model revealed that RasGRP1 overexpression bestows a fitness advantage to haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) over wild-type cells. Intriguingly, this increased fitness only manifests in native Hematopoiesis, and not in BM transplantation (BMT) assays. In this commentary, we summarize key features of our RoLoRiG model, elaborate on BM niche importance, and discuss differences between native Hematopoiesis and BMT in the context of stem cell metabolism.Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was the first human cancer-causing virus to be discovered over fifty years ago. The double-stranded nature of its DNA genome allows the utilization of the whole gamut of ncRNA types, including both RNA polymerase II and III transcripts, in devising a sophisticated strategy to ensure its replication upon infection in host cells and evasion of host immune responses. Owing to the development of sensitive technologies in recent years, mostly entailing next-generation sequencing, the list of ncRNA types generated by EBV has expanded now to include two RNAs (EBER1 and EBER2) best categorized as long ncRNAs, dozens of microRNAs, one small nucleolar RNA, stable intronic sequence RNAs, and the most recently discovered circular RNAs. With the application of cutting-edge technology, the molecular mechanisms of some of these noncoding transcripts are beginning to emerge, while others remain yet to be elucidated.
