Coping with stress is important, because stress disturbs sleep. However, only a few longitudinal studies have investigated the association between coping and insomnia. We examined whether individuals with insomnia symptoms used more maladaptive coping strategies than individuals without insomnia symptoms, and evaluated the association between insomnia symptoms and coping strategies.

In this prospective cohort study, Japanese workers were enrolled and observed over a 2-year period. During both years, self-administered questionnaires on coping and insomnia symptoms were administered. Coping was assessed using the Brief Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced, and insomnia symptoms were examined using the Athens Insomnia Scale. Generalized estimating equation modeling identified the effects of coping strategies on insomnia severity.

In total, 1,358 of 1,855 workers at baseline were followed up. Individuals with insomnia symptoms showed a higher use of maladaptive coping strategies and less use of humor ine whether coping strategies may prevent insomnia symptoms.A keyword-based search of comprehensive databases such as PubMed may return irrelevant papers, especially if the keywords are used in multiple fields of study. In such cases, domain experts (curators) need to verify the results and remove the irrelevant articles. Automating this filtering process will save time, but it has to be done well enough to ensure few relevant papers are rejected and few irrelevant papers are accepted. A good solution would be fast, work with the limited amount of data freely available (full paper body may be missing), handle ambiguous keywords and be as domain-neutral as possible. In this paper, we evaluate a number of classification algorithms for identifying a domain-specific set of papers about echinoderm species and show that the resulting tool satisfies most of the abovementioned requirements. Echinoderms consist of a number of very different organisms, including brittle stars, sea stars (starfish), sea urchins and sea cucumbers. While their taxonomic identifiers are specific, the common names are used in many other contexts, creating ambiguity and making a keyword search prone to error. We try classifiers using Linear, Naïve Bayes, Nearest Neighbor, Tree, SVM, Bagging, AdaBoost and Neural Network learning models and compare their performance. We show how effective the resulting classifiers are in filtering irrelevant articles returned from PubMed. The methodology used is more dependent on the good selection of training data and is a practical solution that can be applied to other fields of study facing similar challenges. Radial spokes (RSs) facilitate the beating motion of these organelles by mediating signal transduction between dyneins and a central pair (CP) of singlet microtubules. RS complex isolation from Chlamydomonas axonemes enabled the detection of 23 radial spoke proteins (RSP1-23), with the roles of some radial spoke proteins remained unknown. Recently, RSP15 has been reported to be located to the stalk of RS2, but its homolog in mammals has not been explored. Herein, we show that Lrrc23 is an evolutionarily conserved testis-enriched gene encoding an RSP15 homolog in mice. We found that LRRC23 localizes to the RS complex within murine sperm flagella and interacts with RSPH3A/B. The knockout of Lrrc23 resulted in male infertility due to RS disorganization and impaired motility in murine spermatozoa, whereas the ciliary beating was unaffected significantly. These data indicate that LRRC23 is a key regulator underpinning the integrity of RS complex within the flagella of mammalian spermatozoa, whereas it is dispensable in cilia.EpiSurf is a Web application for selecting viral populations of interest and then analyzing how their amino acid changes are distributed along epitopes. Viral sequences are searched within ViruSurf, which stores curated metadata and amino acid changes imported from the most widely used deposition sources for viral databases (GenBank, COVID-19 Genomics UK (COG-UK) and Global initiative on sharing all influenza data (GISAID)). Epitopes are searched within the open source Immune Epitope Database or directly proposed by users by indicating their start and stop positions in the context of a given viral protein. Amino acid changes of selected populations are joined with epitopes of interest; a result table summarizes, for each epitope, statistics about the overlapping amino acid changes and about the sequences carrying such alterations. The results may also be inspected by the VirusViz Web application; epitope regions are highlighted within the given viral protein, and changes can be comparatively inspected. For sequences mutated within the epitope, we also offer a complete view of the distribution of amino acid changes, optionally grouped by the location, collection date or lineage. Thanks to these functionalities, EpiSurf supports the user-friendly testing of epitope conservancy within selected populations of interest, which can be of utmost relevance for designing vaccines, drugs or serological assays. These complex and often rare genomic events have traditionally been challenging to study, in part owing to lack of tools that efficiently engineer disease-associated inversions, deletions and translocations in model systems. The emergence and refinement of genome editing technologies, such as CRISPR, have significantly expanded our ability to generate and interrogate chromosomal aberrations to better understand the networks that govern cancer growth. Here we review how existing technologies are employed to faithfully model cancer-associated chromosome rearrangements in the laboratory, with the ultimate goal of developing more accurate pre-clinical models of and therapeutic strategies for cancers driven by these genomic events.It is assumed that there are a static set of "language regions" in the brain. Yet, language comprehension engages regions well beyond these, and patients regularly produce familiar "formulaic" expressions when language regions are severely damaged. These suggest that the neurobiology of language is not fixed but varies with experiences, like the extent of word sequence learning. We hypothesized that perceiving overlearned sentences is supported by speech production and not putative language regions. Participants underwent 2 sessions of behavioral testing and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). During the intervening 15 days, they repeated 2 sentences 30 times each, twice a day. In both fMRI sessions, they "passively" listened to those sentences, novel sentences, and produced sentences. This corresponded to the recruitment of sensorimotor regions involved in sentence production, inactivation of temporal and inferior frontal regions involved in novel sentence listening, and a 45% change in global network organization. Thus, there was a profound whole-brain reorganization following sentence overlearning, out of "language" and into sensorimotor regions. Elastomeric half-mask respirator (EHMR) use in healthcare increased significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Concern for potential release of infectious aerosols from EHMR exhalation valves prompted recommendations to cover them with surgical masks (SMs), thereby improving source control. The physiological and subjective effects of wearing a SM over the exhalation valve of an EHMR, however, are unknown.

Twelve healthy healthcare worker volunteers completed a 30-min series of simulated healthcare-related tasks, including resting, talking, walking, and bending, proning and supinating a weighted manikin, and performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation. This series recurred three times with different mask configurations-SM only, EHMR only, or EHMR with SM covering the exhalation valve. A transcutaneous sensor continuously measured carbon dioxide (tcPCO2), oxygen saturation (SpO2), and heart rate (HR) from each subject. Subjects scored their rates of perceived exertion (RPE) and levels of discomfort after each healthcare-related tasks. Covered EHMR use also did not affect perceived exertion or discomfort compared with uncovered EHMR use. Covering the exhalation valve of an EHMR with a SM for source control purposes can be done safely.
Wearing a SM over an EHMR did not produce clinically significant changes in tcPCO2, SpO2, or HR compared with uncovered EHMR during healthcare-related tasks. Covered EHMR use also did not affect perceived exertion or discomfort compared with uncovered EHMR use. Covering the exhalation valve of an EHMR with a SM for source control purposes can be done safely.In utero brain development underpins brain health across the lifespan but is vulnerable to physiological and pharmacological perturbation. Here, we show that antiepileptic medication during pregnancy impacts on cortical activity during neonatal sleep, a potent indicator of newborn brain health. These effects are evident in frequency-specific functional brain networks and carry prognostic information for later neurodevelopment. Notably, such effects differ between different antiepileptic drugs that suggest neurodevelopmental adversity from exposure to antiepileptic drugs and not maternal epilepsy per se. This work provides translatable bedside metrics of brain health that are sensitive to the effects of antiepileptic drugs on postnatal neurodevelopment and carry direct prognostic value.
Diesel engine exhaust (DEE) is a known lung carcinogen and a common occupational exposure in Canada. The use of diesel-powered equipment in the construction industry is particularly widespread, but little is known about DEE exposures in this work setting. The objective of this study was to determine exposure levels and identify and characterize key determinants of DEE exposure at construction sites in Ontario.

Elemental carbon (EC, a surrogate of DEE exposure) measurements were collected at seven civil infrastructure construction worksites and one trades training facility in Ontario using NIOSH method 5040. Full-shift personal air samples were collected using a constant-flow pump and SKC aluminium cyclone with quartz fibre filters in a 37-mm cassette. Exposures were compared with published health-based limits, including the Dutch Expert Committee on Occupational Safety (DECOS) limit (1.03 µg m-3 respirable EC) and the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (FIOH) recommendation (5 µg m-3 respirable EC).
