The effect of wastewater application on desert soil, drainage and plant properties was evaluated. Experimental results demonstrated that the tested desert soil has no soil structure, organic matter, nor microbial community while possess high infiltration rate. The use of wastewater significantly improved plant growth, and the biomass of TTW, RW, STW were 5.5, 4.3, 2.9 times of CK. The infiltration rate of water in bare soil was high (high to low TTW, CK, RW, STW), while plant growth reduced infiltration rate (ca. 40% with TTW and RW). Wastewater irrigation and plant growth decreased soil zeta potential, while increased formation of aggregates and bacterial abundance and diversity in soil. Top soil (0-30 cm) accumulation of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), organic matter and E. coli was evidenced and all could go down to deep soil and drainage with constant wastewater use. It was concluded that domestic wastewater had big potential in desert soil vegetation recovering and function restoration. Research has shown that hepatitis B (HBV) and Delta virus (HDV) are a worldwide public health problem. This study aims to estimate the prevalence rates of HBV and HDV infection in five municipalities of Maranhão, Northeastern Brazil.

A total sample between 3856 and 4000 individuals. Questionnaires were used to register sociodemographic characteristics and factors associated with transmission. Patients were tested for hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg), anti-hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc), and antibodies against hepatitis Delta virus (anti-HDV). Factors associated with HBV were detected by means of multivariate Poisson regression.

Overall, 3983 subjects were included. Ninety-two of the participants were HBsAg-positive (2.30%, 95% CI 1.80-2.80), and anti-HBc was detected in 1535 (38.50%, 95% CI 37-40). The factors associated with the presence of anti-HBc were (1) Municipality (P<0.001); Age (P<0.001); School education (P<0.001); Illicit drug use (P=0.001); non-HBV vaccine (P=0.041). Among the HBsAg carriers, eight were anti-HDV-positive (8.69%, 95% CI 2.90-14.40). The most frequent HBV genotype was D4. The only HDV genotype was HDV-8.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has been a challenge globally. Cervical degenerative disc disease is common in clinical practice. Surgery is among the most effective treatments for patients with cervical radiculopathy, myelopathy, or stenosis. Which treatment is the best option for multilevel cervical degenerative disc disease is controversial. Hybrid surgery, combined cervical disc replacement and anterior cervical discectomy and fusion, may be an alternative treatment for multilevel cervical degenerative disc disease.

Sixty-four patients with 3-level hybrid surgery and 37 patients with 3-level anterior cervical discectomy and fusion were reviewed retrospectively. Clinical outcomes were based on visual analog scale, Neck Disability Index, 36-Item Short Form Survey, and Japanese Orthopaedic Association scores and Japanese Orthopaedic Association recovery rate. Radiologic assessments included range of motion (ROM) of C2-C7 and adjacent level and cervical lordosis of C2-C7. Perioperative parameters, fusion condition, and complications were assessed.

There were no statistical differences observed between the 2 groups for Japanese Orthopaedic Association, Neck Disability Index, or visual analog scale scores.
