Network analysis to examine infectious contact relations provides an important means to uncover the topologies of individual infectious contact networks. This study aims to investigate the spread of diseases among individuals over contact networks by exploring the 2015 Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) outbreak in Korea. We present several distinct features of MERS transmission by employing a comprehensive approach in network research to examine both the traced relationship matrix of infected individuals and their bipartite transmission routes among healthcare facilities visited for treatment. The results indicate that a few super-spreaders were more likely to hold certain structural advantages by linking to an exceptional number of other individuals, causing several ongoing transmission events in neighbourhoods without the aid of any intermediary. Thus, the infectious contact network exhibited small-world dynamics characterised by locally clustered contacts exposed to transmission paths via short path lengths. In addition, nosocomial infection analysis shows the pattern of a common-source outbreak followed by secondary person-to-person transmission of the disease. Based on the results, we suggest policy implications related to the redesign of prevention and control strategies against the spread of epidemics.The underlying reasons behind the unprecedented increase of the mortality rates due to the opioid epidemics in the United States are still not fully uncovered. Most efforts have been focused on targeting opioids, but there is little information about vulnerable populations at high risk of opioid abuse and death. In this study, we used data from the Ohio Department of Health for deaths caused by prescription opioids from 2010-2017 to analyze the spatiotemporal dynamics of the opioid overdose epidemic. Our results showed a rapid increase in prescription opioid death rates among the white male population aged 30-39 but also a considerable increase among the black male population with an exponential growth trend. Our geospatial analysis suggests that the increasing rates of the opioid overdose epidemic in Ohio were driven by the epidemic hotspot areas. Our findings highlight the relevance of prioritizing public health measures targeting specific locations and vulnerable populations to mitigate the current opioids crisis.Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) suffer from motor and non-motor symptoms; 40% would develop dementia (PD-D). Impaired face and emotion processing in PD has been reported; however, the deficits of face processing in PD-D remain unclear. We investigated three essential aspects of face processing capacity in PD-D, and the associations between cognitive, neuropsychiatric assessments and task performances. Twenty-four PD-D patients (mean age 74.0 ± 5.55) and eighteen age-matched healthy controls (HC) (mean age 71.0 ± 6.20) received three computerized tasks, morphing-face discrimination, dynamic facial emotion recognition, and expression imitation. Compared to HC, PD-D patients had lower sensitivity (d') and greater neural internal noises in discriminating faces; responded slower and had difficulties with negative emotions; imitated some expressions but with lower strength. Correlation analyses revealed that patients with advancing age, slow mentation, and poor cognition (but not motor symptoms) showed stronger deterioration in face perception. Importantly, these correlations were absent in the age-matched HC. The present study is among the first few examined face processing in patients with PD-D, and found consistent deficits correlated with advancing age and slow mentation. We propose that face discrimination task could be included as a potential test for the early detection of dementia in PD.Red wolfberry (or goji berry, Lycium barbarum; LB) is an important agricultural product with a high content of pharmacologically important secondary metabolites such as phenylpropanoids. A close relative, black wolfberry (L. ruthenicum; LR), endemic to the salinized deserts of northwestern China, is used only locally. The two fruits exhibit many morphological and phytochemical differences, but genetic mechanisms underlying them remain poorly explored. In order to identify the genes of interest for further studies, we studied transcriptomic (Illumina HiSeq) and metabolomic (LC-MS) profiles of the two fruits during five developmental stages (young to ripe). As expected, we identified much higher numbers of significantly differentially regulated genes (DEGs) than metabolites. The highest numbers were identified in pairwise comparisons including the first stage for both species, but total numbers were consistently somewhat lower for the LR. The number of differentially regulated metabolites in pairwise comparisons of developmental stages varied from 66 (stages 3 vs 4) to 133 (stages 2 vs 5) in both species. We identified a number of genes (e.g. AAT1, metE, pip) and metabolites (e.g. rutin, raffinose, galactinol, trehalose, citrulline and DL-arginine) that may be of interest to future functional studies of stress adaptation in plants. As LB is also highly suitable for combating soil desertification and alleviating soil salinity/alkalinity/pollution, its potential for human use may be much wider than its current, highly localized, relevance.Three-dimensional transition metal hydroxide monoliths were facilely fabricated by a sol-gel process accompanied by phase separation in the presence of polyacrylic acid (PAA) and propylene oxide (PO). In the typical ZnCl2-PAA-PO system, PAA is used as a phase separation inducer as well as a framework former to control the phase separation and the formation of macrostructures, whereas PO works as a proton scavenger to initiate the gelation of the system and freeze the macrostructures. Appropriate amount of PAA, PO and solvents allow the formation of zinc (Zn) hydroxide monolith with cocontinuous skeletons and interconnected macropores, and the construction mechanism and characteristics of macrostructure are also investigated.
