Usually asymptomatic, they may cause severe complications in some cases. Intussusception is unusual in adults, but when diagnosed swiftly it can be treated surgically, usually with good outcome. Case presentation We present a 60-year-old female patient with a history of chronic malnutrition and anemia, complaining of acute abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea. Contrast-enhanced abdominal computed tomography (CT) showed intussusception, multiple giant jejunal diverticula and multiple lipomas. The patient underwent urgent surgery, but radical treatment was not possible due to the extent of the diseases. One month later, another surgery was needed due to ileostomy obstruction caused by lipomas. The patient's condition deteriorated due to malnutrition and concomitant metabolic disorders, which eventually led to her demise. Conclusions Radical treatment is not always possible in an extensive jejunal disease. Prolonged malnutrition impairs postoperative healing, and therefore surgical or nutritional treatment should be considered in jejunal diverticulosis before the onset of severe complications requiring urgent surgical intervention.Drug absorption is one of the critical factors that should be taken into account in the process of drug discovery and development. The human colon carcinoma cell layer (Caco-2) model has been frequently used as a surrogate to preliminarily investigate the intestinal absorption. In this study, a quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) model was generated using the innovative machine learning-based hierarchical support vector regression (HSVR) scheme to depict the exceedingly confounding passive diffusion and transporter-mediated active transport. The HSVR model displayed good agreement with the experimental values of the training samples, test samples, and outlier samples. The predictivity of HSVR was further validated by a mock test and verified by various stringent statistical criteria. This paper examines the prevalence and risk factors for insomnia in two Cree First Nation communities in Saskatchewan, Canada. Five hundred and eighty-eight adults participated in a baseline survey conducted as part of the First Nations Sleep Health Collaborative Project. The prevalence of insomnia was 19.2% among participants with an Insomnia Severity Index score of ≥15. Seven patients were enrolled for hip prosthesis revision owing to ascertained damage of the implant. Metals in the blood and urine were evaluated before and after the hip revision. The double measurement before the total hip revision revealed high levels of metal ions (on average, 88.1 µg/L of cobalt in the blood, 399.0 µg/g of creatinine cobalt in the urine, 46.8 µg/L of chromium in the blood, and 129.6 µg/g of creatinine chromium in the urine at the first measurements), with an increasing trend between the first and second dosage. Within a week after the hip revision, the levels of metal ions significantly decreased by approximately half. Four to six months after the operation, the cobalt levels were found near to the reference values, whereas the chromium levels reached 25% of the values measured before the revision. Moreover, increasing evidence suggests that PrPC plays essential roles in the maintenance of homeostasis of these neurometals in the synapse. Here, we review our studies and other new findings that inform the current understanding of the links between trace elements and physiological functions of PrPC and the neurotoxicity of PrPSc.Worldwide, there are socioeconomic inequalities in health and diet. We studied the relationship between education and nutrient intake in 11,302 women and men aged 40-96 years who participated in the seventh survey of the population-based Tromsø Study (2015-2016), Norway (attendance 65%). Diet was assessed using a validated food-frequency questionnaire. We examined the association between education and intake of total energy and macronutrients by sex using linear and logistic regression models adjusted for age, body mass index, leisure time physical activity and smoking. The intake of macronutrients was compared with the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations 2012. There was a positive association between education and intake of fiber and alcohol, and a negative association between education and intake of total carbohydrates and added sugar in both women and men. Participants with long tertiary education had higher odds of being compliant with the recommended intake of fiber and protein and the maximum recommended level for added sugar and had lower odds of being compliant with the recommended intake of total carbohydrates and the maximum recommended level for alcohol, compared to participants with primary education. Many studies have shown a potential stimulatory effect of serotonin on cancer cell proliferation, invasion, dissemination, and tumor angiogenesis. Although the underlying mechanism is complex, it is proposed that serotonin levels in the tumor and its interaction with specific receptor subtypes are associated with disease progression. This review article describes serotonin's role in cancer pathogenesis and the utility of the serotonin pathway as a potential therapeutic target in cancer treatment. Octreotide, an inhibitor of serotonin release, is used in well-differentiated neuroendocrine cancers, and the tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH) inhibitor, telotristat, is currently being investigated in clinical trials to treat patients with metastatic neuroendocrine tumors and advanced cholangiocarcinoma. Several in vitro studies have shown the anticancer effect of 5-HT receptor antagonists in various cancers such as prostate cancer, breast cancer, urinary bladder, colorectal cancer, carcinoid, and small-cell lung cancer. More in vivo studies are needed to assess serotonin's role in cancer and its potential use as an anticancer therapeutic target. link3 Serotonin is also being evaluated for its immunoregulatory properties, and studies have shown its potential anti-inflammatory effect. Therefore, it would be of interest to explore the combination of serotonin antagonists with immunotherapy in the future.
