Hyla chrysoscelis and H. versicolor are common treefrogs in eastern North America and are a cryptic diploid-tetraploid species pair. They are morphologically identical but H. versicolor is a tetraploid. They can be identified acoustically by the male's advertisement mating call, which has a pulse repetition rate that has twice as many pulses per second in the diploid species, H. chrysoscelis. We used isozymes, microsatellite DNA alleles, and mitochondrial cytochrome b sequences to test the hypothesis that gene exchange occurs between the diploid and tetraploid species in sympatric populations. Each method provided results that are best explained by occasional hybridization of female H. versicolor and male H. chrysoscelis. We propose that H. versicolor first arose from an autotriploid H. chrysoscelis female that produced unreduced triploid eggs. After H. versicolor became established, genes could be passed from H. chrysoscelis to H. versicolor in sympatric populations when these species hybridize. Their F1 female progeny produce unreduced triploid eggs that are fertilized by haploid H. chrysoscelis sperm to reconstitute H. versicolor. Genes can be passed from diploid H. chrysoscelis to tetraploid H. versicolor in sympatric populations.
This study sought to determine the impact of a ketogenic dietary intervention on the quality of life of stage II and III cancer patients.
A randomized controlled trial was implemented whereby patients in the treatment group followed a modified ketogenic diet (KD) utilizing medium chained triglyceride fats during a four-month period, while the control group followed an institutionalized standard traditional diet. Quality of life and mental health status was assessed using The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer current core questionnaire and The Patient Health Questionnaire. Intervention effects were assessed using repeated measures ANCOVA and multiple linear regression models.
The quality of life and mental health of the cancer patients in the treatment group were greatly increased and improved due to the utilization of the diet. Most of the persons in the treatment group attained and maintained ketosis after 2 weeks. Age, gender, and state of the disease seemed to affect the keto-adaptation period in terms of the time taken to keto-adapt.
The KD was suitable for stage II and III cancer patients in improving their quality of life, nutritional, functional, and psychosocial statuses.
The KD was suitable for stage II and III cancer patients in improving their quality of life, nutritional, functional, and psychosocial statuses. It has been hypothesized that consumption of citrus, a group of foods particularly rich in a class of photoactive compounds known as furocoumarins, may increase the risk of malignant melanoma. However, this hypothesis has not been rigorously studied in a general sample of US men and women. This study examined the relationship between citrus intake and melanoma risk in subjects of the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study. Among 388,467 adults, 3,894 melanoma cases were identified during a median follow-up of 15.5 years. After adjustment for relevant potential confounders, total citrus consumption was not significantly associated with melanoma risk in this cohort. Among those with higher estimated exposure to ultraviolet radiation, and among those aged 60+ years at baseline, there were significant trends toward increased melanoma risk associated with whole citrus fruit consumption (P trends = 0.01 and 0.02, respectively), but the hazard ratios of the top consumers (2+ cups per week) vs. nonconsumers were nonsignificant. Further research is needed to explore associations of citrus with melanoma risk among older adults and those with high sun exposure.Glucose is the primary metabolic substrate of neurons and is responsible for supporting many vital functions including neuronal signalling. Decreases in glucose uptake and utilization are common characteristics of dementia, particularly Alzheimer's disease, and thus agents that can restore neuronal glucose availability may be especially valuable to the field. Diets rich in antioxidants and polyphenols have been associated with reductions in the risk of chronic disease that are associated with aging. In previous studies, rosemary extract (RE) has been reported to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and antidiabetic properties. The purpose of the present study was to explore the effects of RE on neuronal glucose uptake. Human SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells exposed to varied concentrations of RE showed a dose-dependent increase in glucose uptake, with a significant increase observed following treatment with 5 µg/mL RE for 2 h (159% ± 20.81% of control) that was comparable to maximum insulin stimulation (135.6% ± 3.2% of control). This increase in glucose uptake was paralleled by increases in AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), but not Akt, phosphorylation/activation. Brensocatib DPP inhibitor The present study is the first to report that treatment with rosemary extract can stimulate glucose uptake in a neuronal cell line. These results demonstrate the potential of RE to be used as an agent to regulate neuronal glucose homeostasis. Novelty RE increases neuronal glucose uptake. RE activates AMPK in neurons. RE increases neuronal glucose uptake independently of insulin signalling.Purpose This study investigated the extent to which speech-language pathologists (SLPs) facilitate parents' completion of homework activities for children with speech sound disorder (SSD). In addition, this study explored factors related to more consistent communication about homework completion and strategies considered particularly effective for supporting this element of parental involvement. Method Licensed SLPs serving at least one child with SSD were invited to participate in an online survey. Questions relevant to this study gathered information regarding (a) frequency of communication about homework distribution and follow-up, (b) demographic and workplace characteristics, and (c) an open-ended question about the specific strategies used to support parental involvement and completion of homework activities. Results Descriptive results indicated considerable variability with respect to how frequently SLPs engaged in communication about homework completion, but that school-based SLPs were significantly less likely to engage in this type of follow-up. Strategies considered effective, however, were similar across therapy contexts. Conclusion These results suggest potentially important differences between school-based services and therapy in other contexts with respect to this particular aspect of service provision for children with SSD.We report on Rh(II)-catalyzed enamine homologation reactions of triazoles with cyclopropylmethyl sulfides. This reaction proceeds via Dimroth rearrangement of triazoles followed by rhodium-catalyzed ylide formation. This ylide, however, does not undergo classic rearrangement reactions. Instead, it undergoes a selective, intramolecular alkylation reaction to yield cyclopropylmethyl-substituted enamides. The application of this reaction was evaluated with different triazoles and sulfides, which underline the special reactivity of cyclopropylmethyl sulfides (29 examples, up to 83% yield).Scientific progress comes as we build upon the work of others. Implicit in this advance is that we have access to and can thoroughly examine the work of others. It is important to recognize that our scholarly work as scientists encompasses not only experimental design and data collection but also our analytical methods. Thus when communicating biology experiments, especially those that utilize molecular omics data, the analysis methods that connect raw data to scientific conclusions must be presented with sufficient clarity that others can reproduce our exact work. Although there are many resources for sharing raw data files, there is currently not a widely utilized method for sharing analysis methods. We present a semistructured pattern for sharing analysis methods that is simple and efficient and can be implemented by individual laboratories using existing software. This pattern requires three types of files in a publicly accessible repository, such as GitHub (1) data files, (2) a universal I/O script that parses all data files, and (3) analysis scripts creating figures and metrics reported in the manuscript. We suggest additional conventions to improve the readability and provide a template repository for the pattern. Sharing our exact analysis methods as software, in addition to their narrative description in a manuscript, will ensure reproducibility and transparency. Importantly, the pattern we present does not require new infrastructure and can be achieved without advanced computing skills.Herein reported is a nickel-catalyzed reductive aryl thiocarbonylation of alkene via thioester group transfer strategy by using simple and readily available thioesters. In contrast to traditional activation of weaker C(acyl)-S bond, the C(acyl)-C bond of thioester was selectively cleaved to enable this reaction under mild conditions. Furthermore, this approach features operational simplicity and broad substrate scope, providing a complementary and practical route for thioester synthesis without requiring toxic thiol or CO gas. This work reports for the first time the copolymerization studies of 11 newly synthesized epoxidized vegetable oils (EVOs) that reacted with a disulfide-based aromatic dicarboxylic acid (DCA) to produce thermoset materials with recyclability properties. These new EVOs' reactivity and properties were compared with those of the two commercial references epoxidized linseed oil (ELO) and epoxidized soybean oil (ESO). The structure-reactivity correlation is proposed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis, corroborating the epoxy content of EVO monomers, the initiator effect, the copolymerization reaction enthalpy, and the temperature range. The thermomechanical properties of the obtained thermosets were evaluated and discussed in correlation with the structure and reactivity of monomers by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), tensile testing, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It has been found that the higher the EVO functionality, the higher is the reactivity, cross-linking density, and final performances, with tan δ values ranging from 34 to 111 °C. This study investigates the chemical recycling and the solvent resistance of these vitrimer-like materials that have a high bio-based carbon content, from 58 to 79%, with potential application in coating or composite materials in the automotive sector.Microfibers (mf) are the most common type of microplastic in the environment. Few studies have focused on their abundance in atmospheric deposition in background environments. In the current study, we collected wet-only and bulk rainfall from four precipitation chemistry monitoring stations, primarily located in coastal areas around Ireland. Anthropogenic mf were observed in all samples; the average deposition across the four study sites was 80 mf m-2 day-1. Wet-only mf deposition was 70 mf m-2 day-1 compared with bulk deposition of 100 mf m-2 day-1. The wet-only collectors were estimated to capture ∼70% of the bulk collectors, suggesting that dry deposition makes up at least 30% of total deposition. Meteorological variables, i.e., relative humidity, rainfall volume, wind speed, and wind direction, were significantly related to mf abundance, suggesting that rainfall washout and air mass movement are important predictors of mf deposition in background regions. In total, 15% of all anthropogenic mf were identified as plastic.
