However, a long start-up period for granulation and instability during long-term operation still hinder the application of AGS technology, especially for low-strength wastewater. To solve these two problems, this study tested a novel strategy involving the selection of slow-growing organisms and the addition of carriers in an anaerobic-aerobic-anoxic sequencing batch reactor (AN/O/AX_SBR). Three identical AN/O/AX_SBRs (R_Ctrl, R_CCM, and R_GAC), fed with low-strength wastewater, were operated for 120 days. R_Ctrl had no carriers, R_CCM contained cell culture microcarriers (CCM), and R_GAC contained granular activated carbon (GAC). Mature AGS was achieved within 80 days in all reactors. The complex processes interacting within the physical, chemical, and biological environment at different spatio-temporal scales and their impact on the ocean ecosystem processes are yet to be investigated. A long term trend on phytoplankton biomass in terms of Chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a), phytoplankton compositions and the processes that control the variability is required for understanding the ocean ecosystem. This study investigated decadal trends (2002-2015) of phytoplankton composition and biogeochemical parameters over the Global Ocean (GO), Southern Ocean (SO), and the Arctic Ocean (AO) using ocean color remote sensing and assimilated data from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Ocean biogeochemical model. The results revealed the dominance of larger cell phytoplankton mainly diatoms throughout the SO and AO; however, the coccolithophores dominate in the remaining part of the GO. Analysis of nutrients showed that nitrate is not a limiting factor for the variability of phytoplankton biomass in the SO and AO. The low nitrate concentration influenced in the rest of the GO. The photosynthetically available radiation (PAR) limiting the phytoplankton biomass and composition in the SO and AO. Although the SO is known as the high nutrient low chlorophyll (HNLC) region of the GO, the low iron concentration along with the PAR co-limits the growth of phytoplankton biomass. Trend analysis showed that an increase in Chl-a and diatoms in the SO and AO. In contrast, it declined significantly in the other regions of the GO, in response to the consistent increase in sea surface temperature. The results indicated that, shifting of phytoplankton community from regional to global scale have a greater implication for climate change and marine ecosystem.Using solar energy to catalyse photo-driven processes to address the energy crisis and environmental pollution plays a role in the path to a sustainable society. Many oxide-based materials, especially perovskite oxides, have been widely investigated as catalysts for photocatalysis in energy and environment because of the low-cost and earth-abundant and good performance. At this stage, there is a need to present a scientific-based evaluation of the technologies developed so far and identify the most sustainable technologies and the existing limitations and opportunities for their commercialisation. This work comprehensively investigated the outcomes using various scientometric indices on perovskite oxide-based photo(electro)catalysts for water splitting, nitrogen fixation, carbon dioxide conversion, organic pollutant degradation, current trends and advances in the field. According to the results achieved, efforts in both energy and environment based on perovskite oxides have been initiated in the 1990s and accelerated since the 2010s. China and the United States were identified as the most contributing countries. Based on the results achieved in this study, the main milestones and current trends in the development of this field have been identified. While contribution of outdoor formaldehyde to indoor concentration is recognized, long-term measurement about its impact on indoor environments remain missing. We measured both outdoor and indoor formaldehyde concentrations for over one year in Nanjing (east-central China) and calculated the outdoor/indoor (O/I) ratios. 64.8% of the measured outdoor concentration have exceeded the chronic reference exposure criteria of 0.009 mg/m3 set by Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA). The outdoor concentration was highest in summer with median value of 0.020 mg/m3 and lowest in spring with median value of 0.009 mg/m3. Diurnally, outdoor formaldehyde concentration was highest at noon with median value of 0.013 mg/m3 and lowest at night with median value of 0.01 mg/m3. Health analysis revealed that cancer risk by exposure to this concentration level is 1.6 × 10-4, higher than threshold limit of 10-6. In addition, the median O/I ratios are 0.18 and 0.27 in two offices, indicating that outdoor formaldehyde contributes to indoor concentrations by about one quarter. The change of O/I ratio also shows a similar seasonal and diurnal trend as outdoor concentrations (highest in the summer in a year and at noon in a day). Outdoor formaldehyde concentration is therefore not negligible as a contributor to indoor concentration, especially as indoor concentration limit gets continuously lowered. This factor should be taken into account in indoor air quality design and maintenance.
Insulinoma is the most frequent functional neuroendocrine tumor of the pancreas and preserving surgery its treatment of choice. Endoscopic ultrasound-guided radiofrequency ablation (EUS-RFA) is a novel and promising technique that induces tissue necrosis of localized lesions. This article presents a preliminary clinical experience in treating pancreatic insulinomas <2 cm by EUS-RFA, focusing on safety and efficacy.

Clinical course of patients with pancreatic insulinoma treated by EUS-RFA at 2 tertiary referral centers was analyzed.

Between November 2017 and December 2020, 7 patients were included (6/7 female; mean age 66 years). EUS-RFA was feasible in all patients (7/7) with immediate hypoglycemia relief after only 1 single treatment session, 6 out of 7 achieved complete response by cross-sectional imaging and remained asymptomatic (median follow-up 21 months; range 3-38). Three patients had minor adverse events. One elderly patient developed a large retrogastric collection 15 days after treatment, and died 1 month after EUS-RFA.

Intestinal metaplasia (IM) in the esophagus is a potentially pre-malignant mucosal change. The aim of this study was to compare the frequency of IM detection during upper endoscopy by forceps biopsy (FB) versus wide-area transepithelial sampling (WATS) brush.

Patients presenting for upper endoscopy for foregut symptoms or surveillance of Barrett's esophagus (BE) at 9 centers in the United States were randomized to either FB or WATS.

There were 1002 patients. Biopsies were done in 505 and WATS in 497 patients. The overall frequency of finding IM was 21% and was similar with FB (19.6%) and WATS (22.7%, p=0.2). Low-grade dysplasia was found in 8 patients. No patient had high-grade dysplasia. There was no difference in detection of dysplasia between FB and WATS. In patients with no history of IM, WATS found significantly more IM compared with biopsies when a columnar-lined esophagus (CLE) was present (32.4% with WATS vs 15.2% with FB, p=0.004). In 184 patients with known BE, FB and WATS found IM with similar frequency (38.5% FB vs 41.9% WATS, p=0.6) with no difference whether the BE was short- or long-segment.

Overall, FB and WATS detect a similar frequency of IM and dysplasia. WATS was twice as likely as FB to find IM in patients without a history of BE who had CLE on endoscopy. In patients with known BE, WATS and FB showed IM and dysplasia with similar frequency. These findings suggest that WATS can be used instead of FB with similar or improved efficacy at detecting IM and dysplasia.
