Snakebite envenoming is a major neglected tropical health issue. The high incidence of snakebites in tropical rural communities suggests that venomous snakes and people are often in proximity but quantitative evidence is lacking. I used radio-telemetry on a population of Russell's vipers (Daboia russelii), one of the most medically important snakes in the world, to quantify proximity between this venomous snake and people and estimate susceptibility to snakebite envenoming in India. I observed people ≤50 m of a radio-equipped viper in ~17% of 2,066 snake relocations. People were more frequently observed in proximity to Russell's vipers in January and July compared to March, but all other contrasts were statistically similar. This pattern indicates that snakebite incidence, which peaks in summer in the study area, is not particularly linked to the encounter frequency between people and vipers. However, consistent with epidemiological data plantation workers were the most at-risk part of the population. By integrating information about the locations of humans and snakes in space and time, this pioneering research highlights the need to include snake ecology into the study of the human-venomous-snake conflict, and provides a model approach to help mitigate the burden caused by venomous snakes in the rural Tropics.Ethanol consumption is a risk factor of male infertility. The use of medicinal plants offers an alternative for the treatment of male infertility in developing countries. This study aimed to evaluate the Rourea coccinea effect on ethanol-induced male infertility in Wistar rats. Twenty-five (25) male Wistar rats were randomised into five groups of five rats and treated by oesophageal gavage over a 28-day period. Group 1 (negative control) received distilled water; Group 2 (positive control) received 30% ethanol at 7 mg/kg body weight; Group 3 (reference control) received 30% ethanol co-treated with the reference drug, clomiphene citrate; Groups 4 and 5 (test groups) received 30% ethanol co-treated with Rourea coccinea hydro-ethanolic extract at 200 and 400 mg/kg respectively. Testosterone hormone, sperm parameters and testicular histopathology were evaluated. Ethanol treatment induced a significant reduction (p less then .05) in sperm count, motility, viability and a significant increase in sperm abnormalities because of the significant decrease (p less then .05) in testosterone levels. These data correlate with the alterations observed in the seminiferous tubule on histopathological examination of the testes. However, co-treatment of ethanol with Rourea coccinea extract or the reference drug restored the ethanol-induced toxic effects on the reproductive organs, sperm profile and testosterone level.A library of glycoforms of human interleukin 6 (IL-6) comprising complex and mannosidic N-glycans was generated by semisynthesis. The three segments were connected by sequential native chemical ligation followed by two-step refolding. The central glycopeptide segments were assembled by pseudoproline-assisted Lansbury aspartylation and subsequent enzymatic elongation of complex N-glycans. Nine IL-6 glycoforms were synthesized, seven of which were evaluated for in vivo plasma clearance in rats and compared to non-glycosylated recombinant IL-6 from E. coli. Each IL-6 glycoform was tested in three animals and reproducibly showed individual serum clearances depending on the structure of the N-glycan. The clearance rates were atypical, since the 2,6-sialylated glycoforms of IL-6 cleared faster than the corresponding asialo IL-6 with terminal galactoses. Compared to non-glycosylated IL-6 the plasma clearance of IL-6 glycoforms was delayed in the presence of larger and multibranched N-glycans in most cases.
This study aimed to establish and test a predictive model for explaining the health-related quality of life of young adult patients with stroke.

Individual characteristics, biological and physiological variables, social support, emotional and cognitive symptoms, physical function disability and general health perception may be interrelated and may directly or indirectly affect the health-related quality of life of young adult patients with stroke.

A cross-sectional study.

237 young outpatients with stroke were recruited and surveyed. Data collection used a structured questionnaire from July-November 2018. The collected data were analysed using SPSS version 25.0
and AMOS 23.0. This study is based on STROBE guidelines.

The hypothetical model's fit indices were adequate. Stroke severity, social support, fear of stroke recurrence, physical function disability and general health perceptions directly affected the health-related quality of life. Additionally, stroke severity, depression and fear of stroke recurrence also indirectly affected it. These variables explained 60.3% of the variance in this quality.

Variables such as severity of stroke, depression, fear of stroke recurrence, social support, physical function disability and general health perception were found to be related to the HRQoL of young adult patients with stroke.

A variety of physical, psychological, functional and social factors related to health-related quality of life should be systematically monitored. Furthermore, nurses need to develop and apply detailed nursing interventions that take into account all these variables.

Patients undergoing frontal lobectomy demonstrate lower seizure-freedom rates than patients undergoing temporal lobectomy and several other resective interventions. We attempted to utilize automated preoperative quantitative analysis of focal and global cortical volume loss to develop predictive volumetric indicators of seizure outcome after frontal lobectomy.

Ninety patients who underwent frontal lobectomy were stratified based on seizure freedom at a mean follow-up time of 3.5 (standard deviation [SD] 2.5) years. Automated quantitative analysis of cortical volume loss organized by distinct brain region and laterality was performed on preoperative T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies. Univariate statistical analysis was used to select potential predictors of seizure freedom. Backward variable selection and multivariate logistical regression were used to develop models to predict seizure freedom.

Forty-eight of 90 (53.3%) patients were seizure-free at the last follow-up. Several frontal and extrafrontal brain regions demonstrated statistically significant differences in both volumetric cortical volume loss and volumetric asymmetry between the left and right sides in the seizure-free and non-seizure-free cohorts.
