How to Repair Double Glazed Windows
There are a few indicators that indicate your double-glazed windows must be fixed. Water ingress or draughts leaking through the frames are an obvious indication of damage to your windows and should be fixed as soon as possible.
However, misting may be an indication that your window seals are in need of replacement. Replacing the seals will fix the issue and stop condensation, draughts, or leaks.
Broken Panes
One of the most common problems with double-glazed windows is broken glass. Double-pane windows are less difficult to break than single panes, however accidents can occur. It is important to repair broken glass as soon as possible.
The first step is to get rid of any glass shards that are not completely removed that remain in the frame. Wear eye protection and gloves while removing the glass because it could be extremely sharp. After the shards have been removed, look around the floor of your home for any other pieces that are loose. It is also an excellent idea to pull out any metal hooks holding the panes together.
Once the glass is removed, you can begin the process of removing the old compound and glazing points (small fasteners that fix the glass in the window frame) and replacing them with new ones. This is a time-consuming procedure and requires some tools to accomplish the task. This includes latex glazing putty, metal glazing points; pliers; a heat gun and a putty knife.
When removing the old glaze compound and points it is a good idea to start at the top of the sash, and begin to work your way down. This will ensure that you don't end up getting any of the sash's wood or paint stuck to your tool. Also, if you end up removing some of the sash's wood be sure to employ a chisel, or a utility knife instead of a chemical stripper because this could cause damage.
Finally, when you're finished, be sure to remove any wood that is not sanded to smooth it. Once it's smooth then you can apply the oil of linseed or a clear wood sealer to safeguard it from water and future damage.
You can make a few quick solutions to repair cracks in a double-pane window. However, these methods won't fix the problem and should only serve as a temporary solution. The use of silicone caulk can help seal the gap. However, it is important to use caulk of high-quality and with the correct application methods.
Condensation
If you've noticed moisture or mist between the glass panes of your double glazing, it's a sign that one of your windows is suffering from a failing seal. This could be a problem because it stops gas or the insulating air from getting trapped between the two panes of glass which means it cannot do its job correctly and this can cause temperature fluctuations which can cause condensation to form.
Fortunately, the issue can be easily fixed by a double glazing expert. To correct the issue, your window contractor will take out the affected window sash as well as the IGU (insulating glass unit) before putting in a new gasket. This will create a sturdy and airtight seal to prevent condensation from occurring again. They will also employ a drying agent to aid in drying the area out and stop the condensation from happening again.
The other reason why you might notice a misty appearance between the glass panes of a double-glazed window is that the framework has moved slightly over time, which can break the all-important seal. This can be a huge issue as your windows will not work effectively and lose energy efficiency.
Although it is possible to replace panes of a double-glazed Window, this can be very expensive and is usually only required if there are severe problems with the window that are beyond repair. If you have a problem with your double-glazed windows and are still in the warranty period, you might be able repair it for free or at lower cost.
Review your warranty's terms prior to making contact with the company to determine whether they can solve the problem without replacing the whole window. Double-glazed windows usually have a guarantee of 10 to 20 years. It is possible that the company can fix the window unit instead of replacing it. If this is the case, then they'll likely send a specialist out to repair your double-glazed windows and are usually in a position to complete the repair quickly. This is a much less expensive alternative to buying and installing new double-glazed windows. It's also better on the environment!
Broken Locks & Handles
It can be a huge problem if your window handle is damaged or broken, or if it is difficult to open. You will not be able to open your windows. It can also give burglars the chance to break into your home. There are a variety of solutions to address the issue, but the best way is to call a uPVC expert. Based on the severity of the problem they are able to usually fix it for you or at least provide you with an alternative handle.
There are several types of window lock, however, the most well-known is the Maco or Mila locks that are found on most uPVC frames. These locks lock with bayonet-style rods, which can easily be jammed. The handle's nose is stuck in the popped-out position, and it will not return to the wedged locked position. This can be a frustrating problem, but it can be solved with a few easy steps.
To fix the issue, you will need to first remove the handle, which should be done with the help of a screwdriver. After the handle is removed, you will be able to see the screws holding the lock to the frame. Once the screws are removed you can then employ pliers or a wrench to try to grasp the bolts that hold the shoot. If this fails then you can put the tool into the gap between the frame and the window (the gap may differ between the two windows) and then make an "u" shape with your hands to grasp the bolts.
If you manage to unblock the shoot bolts, then you can shut your window by moving the handle to the closed position. But it won't be able to open again by the handle, since the gearbox (espag or espagnolette) will probably be faulty. It is possible to repair the gearbox without the shoot bolts which means that the window can be opened with the handle (and is still secure), but you will need to order an entirely new handle and gearbox.
Broken Hinges
If your uPVC window hinges aren't functioning properly it is possible to repair or replace them. It could be because the window was opened too tightly, or that the hinge snapped. It could also be that they have a problem. It's simple to replace the hinge, so you don't have to buy new windows.
First, you'll need to remove the hinges currently installed. This is done by unscrewing the screws that hold the hinges to the frame. After the hinges are removed then you can replace the boards using plywood that has been cut to the right size. repair double glazing windows should be thicker than the original one to be able to withstand the weight when the window is closed and opened. It is also recommended to use a wood filler to ensure that the hole left by the old hinge is filled to the brim and will not leak or break in the future.
Once you've replaced the hinges and filled the holes, you'll need to paint them. Make sure to use a high-quality paint to ensure it will last as long as is possible. Once the paint is dry and you are ready to re-attach the window and tighten any loose screws.
Regular maintenance is also important for window hinges. You can ensure they last longer by regularly cleaning the tracks of friction and lubricating the hinge mechanism. You can also apply wood preservatives to protect them from the elements. This will help prevent rusting and keep them looking great for the longest time you can.
Double-glazed windows are more energy efficient than single-glazed windows, and can save you money on heating. However, like any other part of your home, your windows will show wear and tear and may require repair or replacement as time passes. Our Preston experts can assist you if you notice any indications that the double-glazed windows you have aren't working properly.
