Perforated viscus as initial business presentation regarding Crohn's disease: a case report.
Mixed relationships occur in southern Europe. These special patterns are strongly associated with specific natural factors, especially the extensive occurrence of quartz-rich soil in the central-eastern part of Europe. Anthropogenic inputs may have also played a role in the mixed southern European areas. The GWR technique is powerful and effective for revealing spatially varying relationships at the local level. Thus, it provides a new way to further explore the related influencing factors on the TOC and pH spatial distribution.Nowadays, agricultural production places an enormous burden on freshwater resources, and the environmental external cost caused by the restoration of water quality degradation has attracted great attention. selleck kinase inhibitor Maize is regarded as one of the world's major food security crops, and China is the second-largest maize producer. Thus, this study conducts an impact-oriented water footprint coupled economic impact assessment to quantify the water-related environmental impacts and economic burden caused by China's maize production from 2008 to 2017. Results show that the overall damage to human health and ecosystem quality of China's maize production in 2017 were 4.32 × 104 DALY and 4.62 × 103 Species·yr, respectively. The total economic cost was $ 2.15 × 1011, which included an internal cost of $ 5.99 × 1010 and external cost of $ 1.55 × 1011. Key factor analysis demonstrates that diesel and fertilizer production dominated the reduction in ecological and external cost burdens. Direct water consumption and labor cost played leading roles in human health and internal cost, respectively. The spatiotemporal variation assessment indicates that Inner Mongolia and Heilongjiang were the hotspots for water footprint and economic impact assessment results after considering the yield factor. The national average water footprint and economic impact caused by producing 1 ton of maize showed an upward trend from 2008 to 2015, however, a significant decline transpired later. Overall, improving the resource efficiency (i.e., diesel and freshwater), scientific application of fertilizer and reducing labor input can further lessen the water footprint and economic impact of maize production. Developing the social environment can also generate indirect environmental and economic benefits to China's maize production.Deaths from the COVID-19 pandemic have disproportionately affected older adults and residents in nursing homes. Although emerging research has identified place-based risk factors for the general population, little research has been conducted for nursing home populations. This GIS-based spatial modeling study aimed to determine the association between nursing home-level metrics and county-level, place-based variables with COVID-19 confirmed cases in nursing homes across the United States. A cross-sectional research design linked data from Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, American Community Survey, the 2010 Census, and COVID-19 cases among the general population and nursing homes. Spatial cluster analysis identified specific regions with statistically higher COVID-19 cases and deaths among residents. Multivariate analysis identified risk factors at the nursing home level including, total count of fines, total staffing levels, and LPN staffing levels. County-level or place-based factors like per-capita income, average household size, population density, and minority composition were significant predictors of COVID-19 cases in the nursing home. These results provide a framework for examining further COVID-19 cases in nursing homes and highlight the need to include other community-level variables when considering risk of COVID-19 transmission and outbreaks in nursing homes.Although nanoplastics (NPs) are known to be toxic to several groups of animals, the effects of such a toxicity on freshwater benthic macroinvertebrate communities remain unknown. Thus, the aim of the current study is to test the hypothesis that polystyrene nanoplastics (PS NPs) (34 μg/L - 48 h of exposure) lead to biochemical damage in Aphylla williamsoni larvae. Data have evidenced high bioaccumulation factor in the analyzed individuals; this finding indicates that, similar to sediments, water is also part of aquatic systems and favors PS NPs retention in dragonfly larvae. Despite the lack of evidence about the interference of these pollutants in the nutritional status of the analyzed animals, their bioaccumulation was associated with REDOX imbalance featured by concomitant increase in the number of evaluated oxidative stress biomarkers (nitric oxide and lipid peroxidation) and antioxidants (antioxidant activity against the DPPH radical and the superoxide dismutase enzyme). On the other hand, the reduced acetylcholinesterase activity observed in larvae exposed to PS NPs has suggested the neurotoxic effect of these pollutants, with potential impact on their nerve and neuromuscular functions. Therefore, the current study is pioneer in showing that PS NPs can affect the health of the investigated larvae, even at small concentrations, for short exposure-time; this outcome reinforces the ecotoxicological risk of these pollutants for freshwater benthic macroinvertebrates.Gray water footprint (GWF) is a simple and efficient indicator to quantify water pollution that has received extensive attention. Previously, an agricultural GWF was estimated by assuming the nitrogen loss rate throughout the crop cycle, while the field chemicals accompanying water movement during crop growth were not considered. In this study, using field observations of water and nitrogen transport in Nanjing, China, the GWF was calculated at the time steps of a day (GWFd), sub-growth period (GWFs), and whole crop season (GWFw), and its formation mechanism and step effect in rice production were explored. Field drainage and leakage caused nitrogen loss and generated a GWF, with the latter occurring intermittently. The values of GWFd, GWFs, and GWFw from 2015 to 2018 were 0.42, 0.38, and 0.31 m3/kg, respectively, and the step effect exists temporally for the rice GWF. The GWF of paddy rice growth decreased as the measurement period increased and the time step was calculated using GWFd as a reference. Herein, it was determined that the GWFw used in previous studies may have greatly underestimated the adverse impact of the GWF on water quality, particularly in humid regions or years. Therefore, it is essential to identify the formation mechanism and appropriately select the time steps for GWF evaluation during rice production. This research provides methodological references for GWF assessment and reduction in crop production systems.Soil surface microtopography plays a significant role in rill erosion. In addition, upslope inflow has a large effect on downslope soil erosion processes. Experiments including four different upslope filling areas (0 m2, 0.15 m2, 0.30 m2, and 0.45 m2) with a upslope inflow rate (6 L min-1) were conducted in two 1 m × 2 m boxes on a 15° slope to examine the effects of microtopography and sediment concentration on rill erosion processes. The upslope filling areas were used to simulate different areas of earthen dike terraces. The results showed that the minimum values of soil surface elevation increased from -120 mm to -110 mm as the upslope filling area increased. The values of the simple fractal dimension (f(α)max), the singular index span (Δα) and the difference of multifractal spectrum (Δf(α)) reached minimum values in the 0.45 m2 upslope filling area. With the development of rill erosion, the soil surface microtopography tended to sharpen, and the relative elevation changed greatly. The runoff and soil loss associated with rill erosion gradually decreased as the upslope filling area increased. We identified the temporal evolution of rill erosion using Morlet wavelet analysis. The main period of temporal fluctuation of rill erosion was 28 min under different upslope filling areas. Multi-scale periods of temporal fluctuation of rill erosion emerged with the increase in upslope filling area. The Δα significantly affected the runoff and soil loss. The proportional contributions of Δα to the runoff and sediment yield were 80.95% and 77.34%, respectively. While the contributions of sediment concentration to runoff and sediment yield were 17.05% and 20.66%, respectively. The findings are important significance for better understanding rill erosion mechanisms of purple soil.Antibiotic residues in mariculture environments have been detected globally, while little information is available about their dynamic levels, source, behavior, and fate during the whole culture process. In this study, the dynamic occurrence, bioaccumulation, source, fate, and human dietary risk of 19 antibiotics were investigated in different breeding stages of mariculture ponds near the Maowei Sea, South China. Fourteen antibiotics, including three sulfonamides (SAs), five fluoroquinolones (FQs), three macrolides (MLs), and two chloramphenicols (CAPs), were detected in the mariculture ponds, with FQs being the most abundant antibiotics. Significant variations of antibiotic concentration occurred during the whole culture process. Severe weather, especially typhoons and rainstorms, resulted in the average highest levels of ∑19antibiotics (mean 567 ng L-1) in mariculture ponds. The source apportionment estimated for the mariculture ponds showed that direct application was the primary source of antibiotics (91.2%). The antibiotics in mariculture ponds were mainly discharged through aquaculture wastewater (65.8%) and settling particles (33.8%). The estimated annual input of antibiotics into the Maowei Sea was 2.24 times higher through the two main rivers (48.0 kg a-1) than through the mariculture wastewater (24.1 kg a-1). The apparent bioaccumulation factors (ABAFs) confirmed that young and adult tilapia accumulated more sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and norfloxacin (NOX), respectively. The result from the estimated daily intakes suggested that the antibiotics in the seafood could not pose a risk to human health by dietary exposure assessment. CAPSULE Big variation of antibiotic concentration occurred during the whole culture process in the mariculture farms, and the storm increased antibiotic application.Recent studies have shown that free nitrous acid (FNA, i.e., HNO2) is biocidal to many microorganisms, promoting the development of FNA-based technology in biological wastewater treatment. Suppression of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) is a critical step for autotrophic nitrogen removal via anammox. In this study, the biocidal effect of FNA on NOB was determined by developing a model methodology combined with NOB incubation. Sixteen groups of FNA exposure tests were conducted at five different FNA concentrations from 0 to 4 mg HNO2-N/L, obtained from three pH values (5.0, 5.5 and 6.0) with nitrite ranged from 21 to 1680 mg NO2--N/L, with one as a control. Nitrate production curves were tracked during incubations of the FNA-exposed sludge, and then used to estimate active NOB concentrations by the kinetic model-based fitting. The results showed that with 24-hour exposure to FNA at a level of over 1 mg HNO2-N/L, the active NOB decreased around two orders of magnitude compared with that in the primordial sludge.
