These structures allow them to climb on vertical smooth surfaces and contribute to prey capture. While adult females and juveniles remain most of the time in their burrows, adult males actively walk searching for females during the reproductive period. Adhesion and locomotion thus play important roles in the ecology and reproduction of these animals. In this paper, we review the current state of the knowledge on adhesion and locomotion in tarantulas, focusing on functional and evolutionary morphology.Groundwater contamination is a global problem that has a significant impact on human health and ecological services. Studies reported in this special issue focus on contaminants in groundwater of geogenic and anthropogenic origin distributed over a wide geographic range, with contributions from researchers studying groundwater contamination in India, China, Pakistan, Turkey, Ethiopia, and Nigeria. Thus, this special issue reports on the latest research conducted in the eastern hemisphere on the sources and scale of groundwater contamination and the consequences for human health and the environment, as well as technologies for removing selected contaminants from groundwater. In this article, the state of the science on groundwater contamination is reviewed, and the papers published in this special issue are summarized in terms of their contributions to the literature. Finally, some key issues for advancing research on groundwater contamination are proposed.The focus of the present study was to assess the quality of different drinking water sources, impacts of poor water quality on human health, and to apportion pollution source(s) of the district Bajaur, Pakistan. Drinking water samples (n = 331) were randomly collected from springs, hand pumps, open wells, and tube wells and analyzed for physicochemical parameters including toxic elements, and bacteriological contamination (i.e., Escherichia coli). Furthermore, a questionnaire survey was conducted to record the cases of waterborne diseases in the study area. The results showed that total suspended solids and bacteriological contamination exceeded the permissible limits of the WHO in all four of the water sources. Among the potentially toxic elements, Cd, Pb, and Mn were above the permissible limits of the WHO in some samples. The hazard index for spring water was found to exceed the toxicity level (i.e., HI > 1) set by US EPA for both adults and children, while the sources from hand pumps, open wells, and tube wells were within the safe limit. The order for the overall safety level for water quality in the study area was tube wells > open wells > hand pumps > springs. The pollution source apportionment statistics revealed that both geogenic and anthropogenic activities are the sources of drinking water contamination. The results of the questionnaire survey indicated that reports of waterborne diseases were highest in respondents who took their drinking water from springs, whereas reports of diseases were moderate in respondents taking their water from open wells and hand pumps and lowest in respondents taking their water from tube wells. Based on the findings of the study, the tube well source of water is recommended for drinking water purposes.The concentrations of dissolved yttrium and rare earth elements (REY) in sediment pore water provide important geochemical information. However, due to the low REY concentration, complex matrix, and limited sample volume (often only a few milliliters), analysis of the REY in pore water often is highly challenging. In this study, a method was established to determine the dissolved REY in pore water of marine sediments using an offline preconcentration step with the ethylenediaminetriacetate chelating resin, followed by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. In addition, using a commercially available automated trace-element preconcentration system, the preconcentration step can be fully automated, saving labor and providing a better control of the final elution volume. The experimental conditions (pH, elution volume, elution acid concentration, and organic complexation effect) were assessed, and the optimal conditions were chosen. In particular, the organic complexation effect was found to be negligible. The procedure blank and limit of detection were satisfactory for studying REY in pore water of marine sediments, and the method also yielded satisfactory recoveries for the REY elements (83-110%). The method was then applied to analyze the dissolved REY concentrations of pore water samples collected in a sediment core (~ 30 cm) in the central Indian Ocean. The vertical distribution, dissolved REY concentration, and the average Post Archean Australian Shale-normalized pattern of the REY showed similarities to the previously published pore water REY data. This method provides an accurate yet facile approach for the analysis of all 15 REY in marine pore water samples using the sample volume of only ~ 5 mL.The Army is replacing traditional munitions with insensitive munitions (IM) resistant to accidental detonation. The aquatic toxicity of 1-methyl-3-nitroguanidine (MeNQ), which is being assessed for potential use in IM formulations, remains largely untested. The present study fills a number of critical data gaps for MeNQ aquatic toxicity by evaluating effects across two vertebrate and five invertebrate species. Specifically, responses in larval Pimephales promelas, Rana pipiens tadpoles, Chironomus dilutus, Lumbriculus variegatus, Hydra littoralis, Hyalella azteca, and Daphnia pulex were assessed in MeNQ exposures across various acute, subchronic, and chronic bioassays. Overall, survival was unaffected in most of the MeNQ exposures where significant lethal effects were only observed in D. pulex, H. littoralis, and C. dilutus and only at concentrations ≥ 2186 mg/L. Significant sublethal effects on growth were observed for C. dilutus at 903 mg/L and H. azteca at 1098 mg/L in 10-d assays. Significantly decreased reproduction was observed at 2775 mg/L for H. azteca in a chronic 35-d assay and at 174 mg/L for D. pulex in the 11-d three-brood assay representing a sublethal effect one order of magnitude more sensitive than the effective lethal concentration for D. pulex (2987 mg/L). Degradation of MeNQ in ultraviolet light (UV) greatly increased toxicity to D. pulex. Specifically, exposure to a MeNQ solution that was completely UV-degraded prior to D. pulex exposures resulted in an 11-d LC50 of 6.1 mg/L and a 50% reduction in reproduction at 3.125 mg/L, based on the original MeNQ parent-compound concentrations.Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in groundwater and leachate around selected waste dumpsites from two southwestern states of Nigeria were investigated. Samples were Soxhlet-extracted using hexane/methylene chloride mixture and cleaned-up with preconditioned solid-phase extraction cartridges. The ∑PAHs (PCBs) (all in µg/L) in the boreholes, leachate, and hand-dug well across all locations ranged from below detection limit (BDL) to 0.62 (BDL to 0.067), 1.16 to 9.96 (0.003 to 0.041), and BDL to 0.01 (0.001-0.031), respectively. Low molecular weight-PAHs accounted for ≥61% of ∑PAHs detected across all locations. link2 The highly chlorinated hexa-PCBs [2,2',3,4,4',5'-HeCB(#180), 2,2',3,4',5',6-HeCB(#34) and 2,2',4,4',5,5'-HeCB(#153)] dominated the entire congener profiles. link3 Pyrene and 2,3',4,4',5-PeCB(#118) constituted 56% and 58% of the ∑PAHs and ∑PCBs, respectively. Sampled water is not adequately safe for drinking and may pose cancer risk. This study should be sustained for health risk and sustenance of an enduring ecological integrity.GP64 is the key membrane fusion protein of Group I baculovirus, and while the Bombyx mori nucleopolyhedrovirus (BmNPV) GP64 contains a longer n-region (18 amino acid) of the signal peptide than does the Autographa californica multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (AcMNPV), the function of the n-region has not been determined. In this study, we first showed that n-region is required for membrane protein localization in BmN cells, then the transcriptome sequencing was conducted on proteins guided by different signal peptide regions, and the results were analyzed and validated by quantitative PCR and luciferase assays. The results indicated that 1049 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified among the different region of signal peptides and the control. With the n-region, the protein export pathway was upregulated significantly, the Wnt-1 signaling pathway was downregulated, and BiP was significantly activated by the GP64 full-length signal peptide. Furthermore, RNA interference on BiP efficiently increased luciferase secretion. These results indicate that the GP64 n-region plays a key role in protein expression and regulation.A total of 96 isolates were obtained from 375 segments, isolated from the healthy roots, stems, leaves, hypocotyls and flowers of Bruguiera sexangula (Lour.) Poir. collected at the Dong Zhai Gang Mangrove Garden on Hainan Island, and 20 independent representative isolates were identified using a combination of morphological and molecular approaches. The most frequent endophytic fungal species isolated were Diaporthe phaseolorum (relative frequency = 31.2%). The Shannon-Wiener diversity and Simpson's diversity index both showed that stems possessed the highest diversity compared to the other tissues estimated. Ethyl acetate extracts and the isolated metabolites were tested for antimicrobial activity using the serial dilution technique and for antioxidant activity using 2,2'-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonicacid) (ABTS) radical-scavenging capacity assays, respectively. The fungal isolate HL18 (Gelasinospora endodonta) cultured on Czapek's agar (CA) displayed a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activities and was significantly active against Escherichia coli (MIC = 0.0625 mg ml-1). Antioxidant assays showed that most of the fungal isolates (60.0%) exhibited some degree of antioxidant capacity (%RSA > 50%). The stain HL14 (Pestalotiopsis mangiferae) grown on potato dextrose agar (PDA) exhibited the highest DPPH and ABTS radical-scavenging capability with IC50 values of 0.717 ± 0.012 mg ml-1 and 0.787 ± 0.027 mg ml-1, respectively. Furthermore, five known secondary metabolites 1-5 were isolated and identified from HL-14. Compounds 1 and 5 exhibited weak antioxidant activity.
