Here, we describe the first case of bilateral infection by T. callipaeda in the eyes of an adult female Iberian wolf (Canis lupus signatus) in central Spain. Nematodes collected were morphologically identified (n = 42), and two specimens were molecularly characterized. At the sequence analysis of the partial mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene, T. callipaeda haplotype 1 (the only haplotype circulating in Europe) was detected. The role of the Iberian wolf as a natural reservoir for T. callipaeda in the life cycle of this emerging zoonosis and the implications in conservation are discussed.The first study reporting the morphological characterization of Sarcocystis sybillensis was performed in 1983; however, without any molecular analysis. Sarcocystis nipponi has been recently described as a species synonymic to S. sybillensis. We reconfirmed the presence of S. sybillensis in Japanese sika deer (Cervus nippon) captured in its native territory; and performed its molecular and phylogenetic characterization. The morphological characteristics of the sarcocysts were consistent with those of S. nipponi and S. sybillensis described in the first report. However, the nucleotide sequence of 18S rRNA gene of S. sybillensis showed only 91.9% identity to that of S. nipponi, suggesting low homology among the concerned Sarcocystis spp. Accordingly, S. sybillensis was found to occupy a clade distinct from that of S. nipponi in a phylogenetic tree of Sarcocystis. Therefore, the present study provides essential information on 18S rRNA-based molecular characterization of S. sybillensis and disproves the existing notion of morphology-based species synonymity of S. sibillensis and S. nipponi. These results also suggest that S. sybillensis belongs to type 2 Sarcocystis.Better prognostication/stratification of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PanNETs) is needed. In this detailed morpheomic study of 163 resected PanNETs, 11 unusual variants, some of which were not previously recognized, and others scarcely documented in the literature, were identified, and their pathologic characteristics were further analyzed. By behavior and clinicopathologic associations, these variants could be grouped into three prognostically different categories. I. More aggressive (20%). Included in this group were the variants that in average showed higher grade and stage and adverse outcome including oncocytic, plasmacytoid, lipid-rich and previously unrecognized hepatoid variants, which often had a more diffuse/broad-band growth pattern, with some also displaying discohesiveness. They were characterized by abundant cytoplasm and often had prominent nucleoli (as seen in metabolically active cells), thus the provisional name "metabolic cell phenotype." Because of their diversion from classical neurolow-up, whereas variants with more degenerative or mature features (ductuloinsular, pleomorphic, paraganglioma-like) appear to be more benevolent despite their more atypical and worrisome morphology.Research demonstrates significant associations between coparenting conflict and child adjustment problems. However, the implications of youth adjustment for coparenting, especially during youth's adolescence, remain poorly understood. Addressing several gaps in the literature, this study examines the longitudinal trajectory of mothers' and fathers' reported coparenting conflict from youth ages 10-17 and tests bidirectional associations between youth social anxiety, hostility, risk-taking behaviors, and mothers' and fathers' coparenting conflict. Participants include 757 mothers, fathers, and youth in two-parent families (M youth age = 11.28, SD = 0.49; 53% female) who participated in 5 waves of data collection when youth were in the 6th to 9th grades. Multilevel growth curve models revealed significant non-linear change in mothers' and fathers' coparenting conflict, such that coparenting conflict declined through youth's transition to adolescence, leveled off in early adolescence, and declined in the mid-late adolescent years. Cross-lagged models showed significant positive associations between youth social anxiety and hostility and coparenting conflict at the following time point, but coparenting conflict did not predict later youth adjustment problems in these domains. There were significant bidirectional associations between mother-reported coparenting conflict and youth risk-taking behaviors; the associations between coparenting conflict and risk-taking were not significant for fathers. The findings demonstrate that investigating longitudinal associations between youth adjustment and coparenting conflict may provide new insights into the role of child effects for mothers' and fathers' coparenting experiences.Chemical fertilizers can supply essential nutrients to crops increasing their yield, however, they can also cause serious environmental problems. Biofertilizer has received more and more attention because of its environmentally friendly and pollution-free characteristics. Haloxylon ammodendron, a desert succulent shrub, has become an important plant species for vegetation restoration in several deserts in China because of its strong drought tolerance. Its extensive root systems and unique rhizosphere bacterial community aid H. ammodendron adapt to this extreme environment. In this study, Bacillus sp. WM13-24 and Pseudomonas sp. M30-35 isolated from the rhizosphere of H. ammodendron in our previous study and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens GB03 and Sinorhizobium meliloti ACCC17578 as well-studied beneficial strains were used to prepare two types of biofertilizer, WM13-24 biofertilizer containing Bacillus sp. WM13-24 and integrated biofertilizer containing all the four strains. Results presented here showed that WM13-24 biofertilizer and the integrated biofertilizer improved chili plant growth, fruit yield and quality and the rhizosphere soil nitrogen content, enzyme activities, and the quantity and biodiversity of viable bacteria. Compared to the control, WM13-24 biofertilizer and a commercial biofertilizer, the integrated biofertilizer performed best in significantly increasing plant height, stem diameter, leaf length and width, chlorophyll content, fruit yield, soluble sugar content, ascorbic acid content, organic acid content, soil urease activity, catalase activity and the quantity and biodiversity of viable bacteria. This study provided a theoretical and practical basis for large scale development of integrated biofertilizers using beneficial rhizobacterial strains from the desert plant rhizosphere.To our knowledge, there have been no reports of mycoviruses infecting Rhodosporidiobolus odoratus. Here, we describe the sequence of a novel mycovirus isolated from R. odoratus, which was designated "Rhodosporidiobolus odoratus RNA virus 1" (RoRV1). Sequence analysis revealed that RoRV1 has two discontinuous open reading frames (ORFs), ORF1 and ORF2, potentially encoding a hypothetical protein and an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), respectively. Phylogenetic analysis based on RdRp sequences clearly placed RoRV1 in the genus Totivirus, family Totiviridae. The fungus also contains two additional, smaller dsRNAs, which might represent RoRV1 satellite RNAs.Coronaviruses can become zoonotic, as in the case of COVID-19, and hunting, sale, and consumption of wild animals in Southeast Asia increases the risk for such incidents. We sampled and tested rodents (851) and other mammals and found betacoronavirus RNA in 12 rodents. Considering the close human-wildlife contact with many species in and beyond the region, a better understanding of virus diversity is urgently needed for the mitigation of future risks.Lead (Pb) exposure is a growing concern in developing countries, especially in vulnerable children. The objective of this study was to evaluate blood lead levels (BLL) in children from two fishing populations at Northern Colombia, Loma de Arena and Tierrabomba, as well as their association with morphometric parameters, markers of hematological status, liver function, and mRNA expression of genes related to Pb toxicity. A total of 198 blood samples were collected from participants aged 5-16 years old. The mean (± standard error) BLL for the studied sample was 3.6 ± 0.3 μg/dL, and the 97.5th percentile was 21.0 μg/dL. The participants of Loma de Arena and Tierrabomba presented BLL of 3.9 ± 0.5 and 2.9 ± 0.3 μg/dL, respectively. Children born preterm had greater BLL than those born at full term. Boys had greater BLL than girls, which also occurred for participants between 12 and 16 years old, compared with those aged 5-11 years old. The BLL were negatively correlated with body mass index in children from Loma de Arena, but an opposite behavior was observed for Tierrabomba. In Loma de Arena, the mRNA expression of interferon gamma, a pro-inflammatory cytokine, increased with the BLL, but that of δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydrogenase, a sensor for Pb poisoning, decreased. In Tierrabomba, gene expression did not change with BLL. These results show that in fishing communities, lead exposure promotes different health impacts depending on age, sex, and other site-specific factors. In any case, appropriate educational and intervention programs should be carried out to minimize Pb exposure in children.The effect of replacing inorganic zinc with organic zinc in diets of pregnant goats was investigated on the development of the liver and spleen of offspring. Pregnant goats (n = 14; Xiangdong black goat, local breed) of similar parity and body weight (BW, 37.17 ± 5.28 kg) were selected and divided randomly into two groups the zinc sulfate group (ZnSO4; n = 7) and the methionine-chelated zinc group (Zn-Met; n = 7). Goats were fed for 45 days (day 106 of gestation to delivery). After delivering, lactating goats were fed a diet without extra zinc supplement. Kid goats were weaned at 2 months of age and both the groups were fed the same diet. All goats were fed a mixed diet and had free access to fresh water. Rutin Kid goats were slaughtered on day 100, and the liver and spleen were collected, weighed, and stored in liquid nitrogen for genomic DNA methylation and related gene expression determination. In the Zn-Met group, the liver organ index of kid goats showed an increasing trend (P 0.10). Furthermore, the blood zinc content of the offspring was reduced (P less then 0.05), and the expression of genes related to methylation were downregulated (P less then 0.05) or showed a downward trend (P less then 0.10) in the liver and spleen. These data indicated that goats feeding Zn-Met during pregnancy increased the offspring liver organ index without change in the genomic DNA methylation. It is speculated that the regulation of zinc finger protein Sp3 adjusted by blood zinc indirectly regulated the expression of methylation-related genes in the liver and spleen of the kid goats, thus enhancing the development and function of the immune system of the offspring.
