A general study of the diffracted far field due to thermal lens heating using Gaussian beams is presented. The numerical simulation considers the whole system, including both the optical and the thermal parameters. It is shown that the existing simplified relations found in the literature and used up to now only give the order of magnitude of the thermo-optical coefficients. More accurate, simplified formulas are derived to measure the induced thermal phase shift when working with Z-scan-based methods. Temperature estimation in absorbing media turn out to be more reliable whether using time-resolved or steady-state techniques. The extension of the calculation to the image formation in a 4f system is also addressed. In this study, through severe reduced-scale braking tests, we investigate the wear and integrity of organic matrix brake pads against gray cast iron (GCI) discs. Two prototype pad materials are designed with the aim of representing a typical non-metal NAO and a low-steel (LS) formulation. The worn surfaces are observed with SEM. The toughness of the pad materials is tested at the raw state and after a heat treatment. During braking, the LS-GCI disc configuration produces heavy wear. The friction parts both keep their macroscopic integrity and wear appears to be homogeneous. The LS pad is mostly covered by a layer of solid oxidized steel. The NAO-GCI disc configuration wears dramatically and cannot reach the end of the test program. The NAO pad suffers many deep cracks. Compacted third body plateaus are scarce and the corresponding disc surface appears to be very heterogeneous. The pad materials both show similar strength at the raw state and similar weakening after heat treatment. However, the NAO material is much more brittle than the LS material in both states, which seems to favor the growth of cracks. The observations of crack faces suggest that long steel fibers in the LS material palliate the brittleness of the matrix, even after heat damage. This paper investigates an experimental design of laser butt welding of S32520 duplex stainless steel, which has been passed out with the help of a pulsed Nd YAG laser supply. The intention of the present research is to learn the impact of beam diameter, welding speed, and laser power on the superiority of the butt weld. The individuality of butt joints has been characterized in terms of tensile properties, fractography, and hardness. It was noticed that unbalanced particle orientations indirectly produce a comparatively fragile quality in the laser welded joint. The outcome of varying process parameters and interaction effect of process parameters on ultimate tensile strength and micro hardness were studied through analysis of experimental data. With different process parameters, the heat energy delivered to the material was changed, which was reflected in tensile strength measurement for different welded samples. From this present research, it was shown that, up to a certain level, an increase in process parameters amplified the tensile strength, but after that, certain level tensile strength decreased with the increase in process parameters. When process parameters exceeded that certain level, the required amount of heat energy was not delivered to the material, resulting in low bead width and less penetration, thus producing less strength in the welded joint. Less strength leads to more ductile weld joints. Microhardness was higher in the weld zone than in the base region of welded samples. However, the heat affected zone had a high microhardness range.Manganese slag is a kind of industrial waste produced by electrolytic production of manganese metal. The traditional method of stacking manganese slag not only causes waste of resources, but also produces environmental pollution. Finding harmless, effective, and economical disposal technology of manganese slag has gradually become a research hotspot and difficulty in the field of electrolytic manganese industry and environmental protection. To verify the feasibility of using manganese slag as roadbed material, the basic physical and chemical properties of manganese slag were analyzed based on X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence spectrum, SEM scanning electron microscope, and particle analysis, the basic engineering characteristics of raw materials of manganese slag and solidified manganese slag mixed with quicklime were analyzed through a compaction test and a CBR test. Finally, based on the Monte Carlo method, the stability of a highway slope in the Guizhou Province of China is simulated by the finite element method, considering the spatial variability of manganese slag material strength parameters. The results show that the solidified manganese slag material can be used as highway subgrade material. This study has important reference significance for manganese slag highway construction projects. From the theory of two-phase composites it is concluded that in the concentration dependence of the Seebeck coefficient S a kink can occur precisely at S=0 absolute if the two phases have different kinds of carriers, electrons and holes, and if the phase grains are spherical without preferred orientations and arranged in a symmetrical fashion. This feature, indeed found to be realized in amorphous Cr1-xSix thin films deposited by ion beam sputtering from Cr-Si alloy targets, can be applied to make reference standards for S=0 at room temperature and even at higher temperatures. Additionally, it may be used to design a thermopower switch between S=0 and S≠0. It is also concluded that the structure realized in any alloy during solidification does not only depend on the diffusion mobility of the atoms and on the existence of a (relative) minimum in the Gibbs' free energy. It depends also on the fact whether this structure is compatible with the demand that (spatial) continuity of the entropy and energy flux densities and their gradients is saved during the solidification process. In this paper, Numpress Explore software, developed at the Institute of Fundamental Technological Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IPPT PAN), was used to conduct reliability analyses. For static-strength calculations, the MES3D module, designed by the authors, was employed. Ultimate limit state was defined as condition of non-exceedance of the capacity value, resulting from the stability criterion of the bent and compressed element. The serviceability limit state was defined as the condition of non-exceedance of allowable vertical displacement. The above conditions constitute implicit forms of random variable functions; therefore, it was necessary to build an interface between the Numpress Explore and MES3D programs. In the study, a comparative analysis of two cases was carried out. As regards the first case, all adopted random variables had a normal distribution. The second case involved a more accurate description of the quantities mentioned. A normal distribution can be adopted for the description of, e.g., the randomness in the location of the structure nodes, and also the randomness of the multiplier of permanent loads. In actual systems, the distribution of certain loads deviates substantially from the Gaussian distribution. Consequently, adopting the assumption that the loads have a normal distribution can lead to gross errors in the assessment of structural safety. selleck kinase inhibitor The distribution of loads resulting from atmospheric conditions is decidedly non-Gaussian in character. link2 The Gumbel distribution was used in this study to describe snow and wind loads. The modulus of elasticity and cross-sectional area were described by means of a log-normal distribution. link3 The adopted random variables were independent. Additionally, based on an analysis of the elasticity index, the random variables most affect the failure probability in the ultimate limit state and serviceability limit state were estimated. The present work aims to study the impact of O and N addition on Cr-sputtered coatings on plastic (polycarbonate, PC) used in automobile parts, as a promisor alternative for auto part metallization, while eliminating the usage of toxic hexavalent chromium. The coatings were deposited using DC magnetron sputtering from a single pure Cr target in a reactive atmosphere (N2 and/or O2). The deposition of the coatings was performed maintaining the total pressure constant and close to 1 Pa by tuning Ar pressure while reactive gases were added. The target current density was kept at JW = 20 mA·cm-2. Structural characterization revealed a mixture of α-Cr, δ-Cr, β-Cr2N, and CrN crystalline structures as well as amorphous oxides. The coating hardness ranged from 9 GPa for the CrON coating to 15 GPa for the CrN coating. All deposited coatings showed a particularly good interface adhesion; adjusting the amount of O and N made it possible to tune the optical properties of the Cr-based coatings as desired. The promising results open future industrialization of sputtered Cr-based coatings for automotive industries. The low-cycle deformation of 304L austenitic stainless steel was examined in terms of energy conversion. Specimens were subjected to cyclic loading at the frequency of 2 Hz. The loading process was carried out in a hybrid strain-stress manner. In each cycle, the increase in elongation of the gauge part of the specimen was constant. During experimental procedures, infrared and visible-range images of strain and temperature fields were recorded simultaneously using infrared thermography (IR) and digital image correlation (DIC) systems. On the basis of the obtained test results, the energy storage rate, defined as the ratio of the stored energy increment to the plastic work increment, was calculated and expressed in reference to selected sections of the specimen. It was shown that, before the specimen fracture in a specific area, the energy storage rate is equal to zero (the material loses the ability to store energy), and the energy stored during the deformation process is released and dissipated as heat. Negative and close-to-zero values of the energy storage rate can be used as a plastic instability criterion on the macroscale. Thus, the loss of energy storage ability by a deformed material can be treated as an indicator of fatigue crack initiation.Clinical trials conducted in many centres worldwide indicate that, despite advances made in the use of biomaterials for medical applications, tribocorrosive wear remains a significant issue. The release of wear residue into body fluids can cause inflammation and, as a result, implant failure. Surface modification is one of the methods used to improve the mechanical, tribological, and fatigue properties of biomaterials. In this article, the authors investigated the impact of ion implantation on improving the functional properties of implant surfaces. This paper presents morphology, geometric surface structure, hardness, and tribological test results for layers obtained by ion implantation with nitrogen and oxygen ions on alloy 316L. The surface morphology and thickness of the implanted layer were examined using scanning microscopy. Atomic force microscopy was used to evaluate the geometric structure of the surface. Instrumented indentation was used to measure nanohardness. Model tribo tests were carried out for reciprocating motion under conditions of dry friction and lubricated friction with Ringer's solution.
