In this study, the morphological properties and micro-roughness of chromium thin film prepared by thermal evaporation technique and confirmed via EDS analysis are examined on different substrates of BK7, Silicon (Si), and glass using atomic force microscope analysis (AFM). Analysis of amplitude parameters, Minkowski functionals, and films' spatial microtexture extracted from AFM analysis showed the difference between glass substrate and the other two (BK7 and Si) substrates for the growth of chromium thin films. In addition, we observed robust signatures of multifractality of the Cr thin films deposited on all substrates we studied. Moreover, we highlight that the Glass substrates displayed the strongest multifractality indicating that such samples present space filling properties distributed over more spatial scales than the samples of BK7 and Si.We assessed the effectiveness of novel and cost-effective citrus fruit peel (oranges, agro-waste material) for the removal of four aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, and G2 in vitro. The biosorbent was described using SEM, XRF, XRD, FITR spectroscopy, and point of zero charge. The adsorption performance was optimised in a batch experiment by altering the various parameters, such as biosorbent dose (1-15 mg/mL), the preliminary concentration of AFs (20-200 ng/mL), pH (1-9), the incubation period (10-60 min), and temperature (10-45 °C). Maximum removal (90%) was achieved when using biosorbent at 10 mg, each AF concentration 100 ng/mL, pH 3, and incubation time 45 min at 37 °C. The experimental data were well-described by the Langmuir isotherm model and the monolayer coverage (Qe) was calculated to be 78.5, 77.8, 79.2, and 75.6 ng/mg for aflatoxin B1, B2, G1, and G2, respectively. The thermodynamic and kinetic studies suggested that the adsorption performance was endothermic and obeyed the pseudo-second-order rate model. Studies at different pH also proved that the adsorption of toxins would be strong and sufficient under pH variation, as found in the gastrointestinal tract. Thus the biosorption of AFs by orange peel powder might be an efficient low price detoxification method in humans and animals.
In response to calls to achieve racial equity, racism has been declared as a public health crisis. Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) is an approach public health organizations are pursuing to address racial inequities in health. However, public health workforce perceptions about organizational commitment to DEI have not yet been assessed. Using a nationally representative survey of public health practitioners, we examine how perceptions about supervisors' and managers' commitment to DEI and their ability to support a diverse workforce relate to perceptions of organizational culture around DEI.
Data from the 2021 Public Health Workforce Interests and Needs Survey (PH WINS) to examine the relationship between public health employees' perceptions about their organization's commitment to DEI and factors related to those perceptions. PH WINS received 44 732 responses (35% response rate). We calculated descriptive statistics and constructed a logistic regression model to assess these relationships.
Findional DEI commitment to marginalized public health staff to further support DEI and racial equity efforts. Building a diverse public health workforce pipeline will not be sufficient to achieve health equity if staff perceive that their organization does not prioritize DEI.
These differences suggest that there are opportunities for organizational DEI commitment to marginalized public health staff to further support DEI and racial equity efforts. Building a diverse public health workforce pipeline will not be sufficient to achieve health equity if staff perceive that their organization does not prioritize DEI.Cadmium (Cd) was measured in bulk exports of Canada Western Amber Durum collected from 1992-1993 to 2019-2020 shipping years. Cd concentrations decreased by more than a factor of two over this period, from the highest annual median concentration of 0.160 mg/kg in 2003-2004 to the most recent annual median of 0.070 mg/kg for 2019-2020. Over the same time period there was no trend in Cd concentrations in bulk exports of Canada Western Red Spring wheat. The decrease in durum Cd concentrations was correlated with the decrease in production of high Cd accumulating cultivars, demonstrating the success of the Canadian breeding programme at developing low Cd accumulating cultivars, the registration system and producer support in reducing the Cd content of Canada Western Amber Durum. The 2021 "PH WINS for All" pilot sought to address a rural research gap by including small local health departments in the Public Health Workforce Interests and Needs Survey (PH WINS) for the first time. To do so, the de Beaumont Foundation partnered with the Public Health Training Centers in Health and Human Services Regions V and X. This article describes the collaborative efforts that made the PH WINS for All pilot successful, presents respondent demographics by agency size, and discusses the importance of gathering such data to address the unique needs of the workforce in small local health departments.Depsides are polyphenolic molecules comprising two or more phenolic acid derivatives linked by an ester bond, which is called a depside bond in these molecules. Despite more than a century of intensive research on depsides, the biosynthetic mechanism of depside bond formation remains unclear. In this study, we discovered a polyketide synthase, DrcA, from the fungus Aspergillus duricaulis CBS 481.65 and found that DrcA synthesizes CJ-20,557 (1), a heterodimeric depside composed of 3-methylorsellinic acid and 3,5-dimethylorsellinic acid. Moreover, we determined that depside bond formation is catalyzed by the starter-unit acyltransferase (SAT) domain of DrcA. Remarkably, this is a previously undescribed form of SAT domain chemistry. Further investigation revealed that 1 is transformed into duricamidepside (2), a depside-amino acid conjugate, by the single-module nonribosomal peptide synthetase DrcB.The development of potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) has been impeded by the lack of an appropriate carbon anode material that could accommodate K+ with a large ionic radius. Hard carbon with low cost and larger interlayer spacing is a promising anode material for PIBs. However, the impact of oxygen-containing functional groups in hard carbon (HC) is less reported. Herein, a hypercrosslinked polymer (HCLP) is prepared and used for the synthesis of microporous hard carbons with superior structural stability and abundant oxygen-containing functional groups and defects, in which the crosslinking agent provided copious oxygen atoms. It is found that a large number of C═O groups and micropores provide more storage sites for K+. The surface-controlled process is dominated by the reversible reaction of C═O + K+ + e- ↔ C-O-K, which directly increases the capacity contribution. The HCs obtained at 600 °C exhibit good cycling and rate performance with an initial specific capacity of about 254.3 mAh g-1 and the capacity retention of 83.2% after 200 cycles at 50 mA g-1. The capacity reached up to 121 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1. A possible capacitive-adsorption mechanism is proposed by kinetic analysis. NSC 23766 ic50 The redox reaction mechanism between C═O and K+ at the HC is clearly also revealed.
To assess the governmental public health (GPH) workforce's awareness of and confidence to address health equity , social determinants of health ( SDoH ), and social determinants of equity ( SDoE ) in their work.
A nationally representative population of US local and state GPH employees (n = 41 890) were surveyed through the 2021 Public Health Workforce Interests and Needs Survey (PH WINS 2021).
Self-reported awareness and confidence were explored by self-identified racial and ethnic group identity, public health degree attainment, and supervisory status.
GPH employees reported higher levels of awareness across concepts ( health equity -71%, 95% confidence interval [CI] 70.5-71.6; SDoH -62%, 95% CI 62.3-63.5; SDoE -48%, 95% CI 47.2-48.4) than confidence ( health equity -48%, 95% CI 47.8-49.0; SDoH -46%, 95% CI 45.4-46.7; SDoE -34%, 95% CI 33.4-34.6). Self-identified Black or African American employees reported higher confidence across all concepts ( health equity -56%, 95% CI 54.3-57.6; SDoH -52%, 95% f equity-related concepts but lack confidence to address them. Public health agencies should build employees' confidence by prioritizing and operationalizing equity internally and externally in collaboration with communities and partners.Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, news and nationwide survey efforts have reported harassment and bullying among local health officials, departments, and personnel, concurrent to a shortage of public health staff in the United States. We examined a nationally representative sample of local public health professionals (LPHPs) from the 2021 Public Health Workforce Interests and Needs Survey (PH WINS) data set to explore reported experiences with harassment, threats, and bullying; self-rated mental and emotional well-being; and intent to leave an organization. Results indicated that experience of harassment was negatively associated with ratings of mental and emotional health and positively associated with an intent to leave an organization. We discuss implications and recommendations to mitigate these risks for the nation's local public health workforce.
Big Cities Health Coalition member health departments (BCHC HDs) serve more than 61 million people across their jurisdictions, nearly 20% of the US population. As such, they have particular challenges and opportunities in how they do their work. This article focuses on BCHC HDs that participated in the 2021 Public Health Workforce Interests and Needs Survey (PH WINS) and describes workplace perceptions, training needs, COVID-19 efforts, and well-being.
To describe key characteristics of the governmental public health workforce among BCHC HDs, including demographics, perceptions, and needs.
Using a subsample of data from the 2021 PH WINS that included 29 BCHC HDs, descriptive statistics on many of the topics covered by the 2021 PH WINS were analyzed and compared with the 2017 PH WINS.
Twenty-nine BCHC HDs in cities across the United States.
In total, 7922 of 29 661 staff members (response rate of 27%) from participating BCHC HDs.
Most BCHC HD respondents self-identified as a woman (76%, 95% confideication between senior staff and employees, and fostering an environment where innovation and creativity are rewarded.
This study uses findings from the most recent iterations of the Public Health Workforce Interest and Needs Survey (PH WINS) to describe importance, skill level, and gaps of key public health competencies as well as characteristics associated with gaps.
Repeated cross-sectional analysis of the 2017 and 2021 PH WINS data.
State and local health departments.
Nationally representative population of state and local governmental public health workers.
Gaps of key public health competencies related to data, evidence-based approaches, health equity and social justice, factors that affect public health, cross-sectoral partnerships, and community health assessments and improvement plans. Gaps reflect areas of high importance and low skill level. Differences in gaps among the traditional public health workforce and those hired specifically for COVID-19 response.
For most competency areas, more than 20% of the public health workforce perceived a gap. Gaps related to environmental factors that affect public health, social determinants of health and cross-sector partnerships, and community health assessments and improvement plans were the largest.
