The biochemical assessment of the antioxidant status of brains of Kafura-treated rats showed significant (p ≤ 0.05) increase in activities of some anti-oxidant enzymes (Superoxide dismutase (SOD), Glutathione peroxide (GPx), and Catalase (CAT)). There was increase in acetylcholinesterase (AChE), Malondialdehyde (MDA), and Total protein activities in the brain of treated rats compared to control. Alterations of the haematological parameters were observed, with the plasma granulocytes, lymphocytes, and haemoglobin (HGB), showing significant decrease in the treated rats compared to control. The water maze test showed a marked increase in spatial learning and memory time (seconds) in kafura-treated rats, compared to control and across treated groups. Conclusions The present study provides indication that kafura Pelebe shows apparent neurotoxicity in experimental animals. Incessant exposure in humans though may lead to development of some central nervous system defects. © 2020 The Authors.Despite the empirical evidence that cervical cancer screening has been a successful public health initiative to secondarily prevent the incidence and mortality from cervical cancer in developed nations, majority of women of sub-Saharan root, Nigeria inclusive, do not utilize this essential health service. Selleckchem Guanosine This study/article contributes to the empirical literature on the drivers of cervical cancer screening utilization within Nigeria context. The paper investigates the determinants of cervical cancer screening utilization among both working class women and women involved in trading activities in Oyo state, Nigeria. The statistical estimations find strong support for attitudinal correlates, perceived seriousness and family history as drivers of utilization of cervical cancer screening. While only 13.5% of respondents reported to have ever utilized the screening test, majority had positive attitude towards the screening. The screening uptake among the women could improve, if necessary barriers are addressed. The paper highlights policy recommendations for enhancing organized screening guidelines in a developing country. © 2020 The Authors.Exogenous gene expression is a fundamental and indispensable technique for testing gene function in neurons. Several ways to express exogenous genes in neurons are available, but each method has pros and cons. The lentivirus vector is useful for high efficiency gene transfer to neurons and stabilizes gene expression via genome integration, but this integration may destroy the host genome. The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-derived vector (EB vector) is an accessible and useful vector in human cell lines because the vector is not integrated into the host genome but stays in the nucleus as an episome. However, there has been no report on this process in rodent neurons. We examined the usefulness of the EB vector for testing gene function in neurons. We found that EB vector-derived exogenous proteins such as green fluorescent protein (GFP) and GFP-tagged actin were easily detectable even after three weeks of transfection. Second, a tetracycline-induced gene expression system in the EB vector was active after three weeks of transfection, indicating that plasmids were retained in neurons for up to three weeks. Third, we determined that only Family of repeat element of the plasmid vector is essential for its long-term presence in neurons. These results show that the modified EB vector is a useful tool for examining gene function in neurons. © 2020 The Author(s).Background Fundamental cause theory posits that social conditions strongly influence the risk of health risks. This study identifies risk mechanisms that social conditions associated with socioeconomic status (SES) and race/ethnicity shape in the production of colorectal cancer (CRC) mortality. Methods Two large datasets in the United States examining behavioral and medical preventive factors (N = 4.63-million people) were merged with population-level mortality data observing 761,100 CRC deaths among 3.31-billion person-years of observation to examine trends in CRC mortality from 1999-2012. Analyses examined the changing role of medical preventions and health behaviors in catalyzing SES and racial/ethnic inequalities in CRC mortality. Results Lower SES as well as Black, Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islander, and Native American race/ethnicity were associated with decreased access to age-appropriate screening and/or increased prevalence of behavioral risk factors. Analyses further revealed that SES and racial/ethnic inequalities were partially determined by differences in engagement in two preventive factors use of colonoscopy, and participation in physical activity. Discussion Social inequalities were not completely determined by behavioral risk factors. Nevertheless, a more equitable distribution of preventive medicines has the potential to reduce both the risk of, and social inequalities in, CRC mortality. © 2020 The Author(s).The appraisal is strongly focussed on challenges associated with the nuclear sector, however these are representative of what is generally encountered by a range of engineering applications. Ensuring structural integrity of key nuclear plant components is essential for both safe and economic operation. Structural integrity assessments require knowledge of the mechanical and physical properties of materials, together with an understanding of mechanisms that can limit the overall operating life. With improved mechanistic understanding comes the ability to develop predictive models of the service life of components. Such models often require parameters which can be provided only by characterisation of processes occurring in situ over a range of scales, with the sub-micrometre-scale being particularly important, but also challenging. This appraisal reviews the techniques currently available to characterise microstructural features at the nanometre to micrometre length-scale that can be used to elucidate mechanisms that lead to the early stages of environmentally-assisted crack formation and subsequent growth. Following an appraisal of the techniques and their application, there is a short discussion and consideration for future opportunities. © 2020 The Author(s).
