In Europe, emerging organic compounds (EOCs) in groundwater is a growing research area. Prioritisation for monitoring EOCs in Europe was formalised in 2019 through the development of the first voluntary groundwater watch list (GWWL). Despite this, groundwater occurrence data in the peer reviewed literature for Europe has not been reviewed to date. Questions surrounding the effect, toxicity, movement in the subsurface and unsaturated zone make the process of regulating EOC use difficult. The aim in Europe is to develop a unified strategy for the classification, and prioritisation of EOCs to be monitored in groundwater. This paper compiles evidence from the recent published studies from across Europe, since 2012, when the last major literature global review of EOCs in groundwater took place. A total of 39 studies were identified for review based on specific selection criteria (geography, publication date, sample size>10, inclusion of EOCs data). Data on specific compounds, and associated meta-data, are compiled and reviewed. The two most frequently detected EOCs, carbamazepine and caffeine, occurred in groundwater at concentrations of up to 2.3 and 14.8 μg/L, respectively. The most frequently reported category of compounds were 'Pharmaceuticals'; a highly studied group with 135 compounds identified within 31 of the 39 studies. In Europe, the majority of reviewed studies (23) were at a regional scale, looking specifically at EOCs in a specific city or aquifer. The use of analytical methods is not uniform across Europe, and this inevitably influences the current assessment of EOCs in groundwater. A correlation between the number of compounds analysed for, and the number detected in groundwater highlights the need for further studies, especially larger-scale studies throughout Europe. For the development of EU and national regulation, further work is required to understand the occurrence and impacts of EOCs in groundwater throughout Europe and elsewhere.Diazinon is a common organophosphate pesticide widely used to control parasitic infections in agriculture. Excessive use of diazinon can have adverse effects on the environment and aquatic animal health. In the present study, the toxic effects of diazinon on the histology, antioxidant, innate immune and intestinal microbiota community composition of crucian carp (Carassius auratus gibelio) were investigated. The results showed that diazinon at the tested concentration (300 μg/L) induced gill and liver histopathological damages. Hepatic total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione S-transferase (GST) activities significantly decreased (P less then 0.05) by 32.47%, 65.33% and 37.34%, respectively. However, the liver tissue malondialdehyde (MDA) content significantly (P less then 0.05) increased by 138.83%. The 300 μg/L diazinon significantly (P less then 0.05) downregulated the gene expression of TLR4, MyD88, NF-kB p100 and IL-8 but had no significant effect TNF-α (P = 0.8239). In addition, the results demonstrated that diazinon exposure could affect the intestinal microbiota composition and diversity. Taken together, the results of this study indicated that diazinon exposure can cause damage to crucian carp, induce histopathological damage in gill and liver tissues, oxidative stress in the liver, and innate immune disorders and alter intestinal microbiota composition and diversity.Air quality has been significantly improved in China in recent years; however, our knowledge of the long-term changes in health risks from exposure to air pollutants remain less understood. Here we investigated the temporal variations and spatial distributions of six criteria pollutants (SO2, NO2, O3, CO, PM2.5 and PM10) in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH), Yangtze River Delta (YRD) and Pearl River Delta (PRD) during 2015-2019. SO2 showed 36-60% reductions in three regions, comparatively, NO2 decreased by 3-17% in BTH and YRD and had a 5% increase in PRD. PM2.5 and PM10 showed the largest reductions in BTH (30-33%) and the lowest in PRD (7-13%), while O3 increased by 9% during 2015-2019 particularly in BTH and YRD. Assuming that only air pollutants above given thresholds exert excess risk (ERtotal) of mortality, we found that the different variations of pollutants have caused ERtotal in BTH decreasing significantly from 4.8% in 2015 to 2.0% in 2019, while from 1.9% to 1.0% in YRD, and a small change in PRD. These results indicate substantially decreased health risks of mortality from exposure to air pollutants as a response to improved air quality. Overall, PM2.5 dominated ERtotal accounting for 42-53% in BTH and 58-64% in YRD with steadily increased contributions, yet ERtotal presented strong seasonal dependence on air pollutants with largely increased contribution of O3 in summer. The ERtotal caused by SO2 was decreased substantially and became negligible except in winter in BTH, while NO2 only played a role in winter. We also found that ERPM2.5 was compositional dependent with organics being the major contributor at low ERPM2.5 while nitrate was more important at high ERPM2.5. Our results highlight that evaluation of public health risks of air pollution needs to consider chemical differences of PM in different regions in addition to dominant air pollutants in different seasons.As energy use in the building sector is increasing worldwide, building materials with characteristics that save energy are becoming increasingly important; in addition, there is an emerging need for high-performance insulation materials with low thermal conductivity. This study evaluated the main performance of 21 insulation materials used at construction sites to objectively and clearly evaluate their overall performance, including their thermal conductivity. Thermal conductivity was measured by the heat flow meter method according to ASTM C518 and ISO 8301 standards; it was also evaluated according to the drying conditions. The water absorption rate was evaluated by ISO 2896 to ensure the sustainability and long-term thermal conductivity performance of the material. Acidity was evaluated with ASTM E861 to reduce the environmental load of the buildings and soil. The results of this study reviewed an appropriate method to measure the main performance according to the type of insulation.In this study, PAHs and their transformed PAH products (TPPs) in road dust were subjected to UV driven photolysis, and then extracted using simultaneous pressurized fluid extraction, and analysed using Shimadzu Triple Quadrupole GC/MS. The results of the analysis were used to investigate the robustness and reliability of 14 existing diagnostic ratios (DRs) and two newly proposed molecular DRs that are relevant for characterizing the sources of PAHs and TPPs. The influence of photolysis on the carcinogenic health risk posed to humans by these hazardous pollutants was then assessed. The findings indicated that the DRs segregated into stable, moderately stable and non-stable classes of source characteristics under the influence of photolysis. Only two of the existing DRs, namely, benzo(a)pyrene/benzo(ghi)perylene (BaP/BghiP) and total index exhibited consistent stability to photolysis, whilst fluoranthene/(fluoranthene + pyrene) (FRT/(FRT+PYR)) showed moderate stability. The two newly proposed DRs, naphthalene/1-nitronaphthalene (NAP/NNAP) and pyrene/(1-nitropyrene + 1-hydroxypyrene) (PYR/(1NPY+HPY)) were found to be highly reliable in post-emission source characterization. The cross-plots of the most stable DRs showed that traffic emissions is the primary source of PAHs, whilst post-emission photolysis is the secondary source of nitro-PAH (NPAH) TPPs. The percent resonance energy thermodynamic stability of the PAH pollutants does not exert any direct influence on the source characteristics of the DRs. Adults are more vulnerable to potential carcinogenic risks as a result of PAH and TPPs photolysis whereas negligible risk exist for children. To compare 2 different, commercially available fibrin glue products with nylon suture with regard to repair strength, muscle function, and axon regeneration after delayed nerve repair in an animal model.

A total of 120 Lewis rats underwent transection of the sciatic nerve. On day 3 after transection, the nerves were reexposed. A primary repair was performed on 40 rats from each group using nylon suture, Tisseel fibrin glue, or Evicel fibrin glue. On days 0, 3, and 7 after repair, 10 rats from each group underwent burst strength testing. Seventy days after repair, 10 rats from each group underwent functional muscle testing and histomorphic analysis of the nerve, with the contralateral limb serving as the control.

There was no significant difference in burst strength among the groups on days 0 and 3. On day 7, the burst strength of the Evicel and nylon suture groups was significantly greater than that of the Tisseel group. There were 5 total coaptation failures in both fibrin glue groups and none in the suture group. Seventy days after repair, tetanic muscle strength, muscle mass, axon inner diameter, and g-ratio were equivalent among all groups. Axon counts were equivalent between the nylon suture and Evicel groups, although in the nylon group axon counts were higher than for the Tisseel group.

In an animal model with a 3-day delay in nerve repair, although dehiscences occurred, when the initial repair held, fibrin glue was not inferior to nylon suture with regard to repair strength and muscle recovery.

Mismatch between kyphosis correction of GK and pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO) may be ascribed to contribution of pseudarthrosis. The aim of the present study was to evaluate surgical outcomes of PSO away from the level of pseudarthrosis and to elucidate the contribution of pre-existing spinal pseudarthrosis in surgical correction of thoracolumbar kyphosis caused by AS. Eighteen AS patients with pre-existing pseudarthrosis were included. PSO outside the level of pseudarthrosis were performed for all the patients. The average follow-up period were 29 months. Radiographs were analyzed for correction and complications. Significant improvement in all sagittal parameters were found postoperatively without obvious correction loss at the final follow-up. Local kyphosis (LK) improved from 23.88° preoperatively to 12.67° postoperatively with a mean correction of 11.47°.
