Loneliness is associated with negative health outcomes, such as cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment, dementia, physical functional decline, depression, and increased mortality risk, among HIV- positive and HIV-negative older men who have sex with men (MSM). Given these negative health outcomes, it is imperative to identify factors that minimize loneliness in these vulnerable groups.

We sought to examine whether social-environmental resiliencies-defined as an individual's level of support, social bonding, and psychological sense of community among gay men-buffer against symptoms of loneliness.

We analyzed longitudinal data from 1,255 older MSM with and without HIV infection, all of whom were enrolled in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS). Using longitudinal latent class analysis (LLCA), we identified three underlying classes (Social Connectors, Non-community Connectors, and Social Isolates) in the social environment of the sample. We assessed the prevalence of loneliness by these latent cl health.
These longitudinal data allowed us to make causal inferences related to the social environmental resiliencies lowering the odds of loneliness among HIV-positive and HIV-negative older MSM. Developing individual- and community-level tailored interventions for these populations by leveraging social environmental resiliencies is key to reducing loneliness and promoting health.Taking Cu and Zn as examples, the pH-dependent interactions between atmospheric heavy metals (AHMs) and water-soluble organic compounds (WSOCs) in PM2.5 were analyzed by a combination of UV-vis absorption, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy coupled with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC). We found metal-H ion exchange, complexation and electrostatic adsorption might occur between AHMs and WSOCs, and were generally enhanced with the increase of pH. Furthermore, these interactions were strengthened with the stepwise addition of [Cu2+] (from 0 to 500 μmol·L-1), but had a relatively slight change with the stepwise addition of [Zn2+] (from 0 to 500 μmol·L-1) generally. This indicated that the above interactions depended on the types and the concentrations of AHMs. Carboxyl, hydroxyl, carbonyl and aromatic structures of WSOCs were the major binding sites with AHMs. Humic acid-like substances were the dominant components of WSOCs binding with AHMs. The ratios of the apparent fluorescence quantum yields of the low and the high conjugation fractions of WSOCs (QExL/H) declined by more than 28% as adding [Cu2+], indicating the formers had more strong complexing capacity with AHMs. AHMs might significantly impact the light absorption capacity and the wavelength dependence of WSOCs. The humification index (HIXem) declined more than 15% as adding [Cu2+] at pH 5.6 and 7.5, indicating AHMs might weaken the oxidation capacity of WSOCs. These results implied the interactions between AHMs and WSOCs might play a profound role in atmospheric environment, human health, and global climate change.The toxicity, volatility and persistence of the obsolete organochlorine pesticide hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), makes reclamation of contaminated areas a priority for the health and welfare of neighboring human communities. Microbial diversity and functions and their relation to spontaneous vegetation in post-excavation situations, are essential indicators to consider in bioaugmentation or microbe-assisted phytoremediation strategies at field scale. Our study aimed to evaluate the effects of long-term HCH contamination on soil and plant-associated microbial communities, and whether contaminated soil has the potential to act as a bacterial inoculum in post-excavation bioremediation strategies. To scrutinize the role of vegetation, the potential nitrogen fixation of free-living and symbiotic diazotrophs of the legume Lotus tenuis was assessed as a measure of nutrient cycling functions in soil under HCH contamination. Potential nitrogen fixation was generally not affected by HCH, with the exception of lower nifH rant, PGP bacteria transferred from the contaminated bulk soil to L. tenuis roots through the rhizosphere compartment, consisting of Mesorhizobium loti, Neorhizobium galegae, Novosphingobium lindaniclasticum, Pantoea agglomerans and Lysobacter bugurensis.The development of modeling technology to adequately simulate water and pesticide movement within the rice paddy environment faces several challenges. These include (1) adequately representing ponded conditions; (2) the collection/implementation of temporal/spatial pesticide application data at field scales; (3) the integration of various mixed-landuses simulation schemes. Currently available models do not fully consider these challenges and results may not be sufficiently accurate to represent fate and transport of rice pesticides at watershed scales. Therefore, in this study, an integrated simulation system, "RiceWQ-AnnAGNPS", was developed to fully address these challenges and is illustrated in a California watershed with rice farming practices. The integrated system successfully extends field level simulations to watershed scales while considering the impact of mixed landuses on downstream loadings. The variation in elevation gradient across a saltmarsh system is small, which means that lateral hydrological connectivity in saltmarsh systems is often ignored and the ecological effects caused by the variation in lateral hydrological connectivity are seldom studied. Lateral hydrological connectivity presents when a hydrological connection between marsh plain and tidal creek occurs, as a time interval during which tidal flow occurred. This study explored the effects of enhancing lateral hydrological connectivity on the plant life history process using empirical studies. Currently much of Europe's soybean is imported, but there are strong economic and agronomic arguments for boosting local production. Soybean is grown in central and eastern Europe but is less favoured in the North due to climate. We conducted field trials across three seasons and two sites in the UK to test the viability of early-maturing soybean varieties and used the data from these trials to calibrate and validate the Rothamsted Landscape Model. Once validated, the model was used to predict the probability soybean would mature and the associated yield for 26 sites across the UK based on weather data under current, near-future (2041-60) and far-future (2081-2100) climate. Two representative concentration pathways, a midrange mitigation scenario (RCP4.5) and a high emission scenario (RCP8.5) were also explored. Our analysis revealed that under current climate early maturing varieties will mature in the south of the UK, but the probability of failure increases with latitude. Of the 26 sites considered, only at one did soybean mature for every realisation. Predicted expected yields ranged between 1.39 t ha-1 and 1.95 t ha-1 across sites. Under climate change these varieties are likely to mature as far north as southern Scotland. With greater levels of CO2, yield is predicted to increase by as much as 0.5 t ha-1 at some sites in the far future, but this is tempered by other effects of climate change meaning that for most sites no meaningful increase in yield is expected. We conclude that soybean is likely to be a viable crop in the UK and for similar climates at similar latitudes in Northern Europe in the future but that for yields to be economically attractive for local markets, varieties must be chosen to align with the growing season.Redistribution of Cr(VI) in ferrihydrite-Cr(VI) co-precipitates (Fh-Cr) was affected by co-precipitates transformation and coexisting substances. These effects were crucial for predicting the migration path of Cr(VI) in ferrihydrite-Cr(VI) co-precipitates. This work investigated the effects of the extensively used surfactants of anionic surfactant sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) and cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) on the Fh-Cr transformation and redistribution of Cr(VI) for 10 days at different pH values (5.0, 7.5 and 9.0) and concentration of surfactants (0.5, 2.0 and 5.0 mM). The results showed that SDBS hindered the transformation of Fh-Cr to hematite and tended to transform into goethite. SDBS inhibited hematite formation by inhibiting the aggregation of Fh-Cr particles, and it enhanced the dissolution of Fh-Cr to facilitate the formation of goethite. Affected by the inhibition of Fh-Cr transformation, the process of Cr(VI) redistribution was delayed. CTAB did not affect the transformation of Fh-Cr, but allowed more Cr(VI) to enter the interior of iron minerals.
