Over the last decade, an increasing number of publications highlighted the APs' involvement in plant defense responses against a diversity of stresses. In contrast, few studies regarding pathogen-secreted APs and AP inhibitors have been published so far. In this review, we provide a comprehensive picture of aspartic proteases from plant and pathogenic origins, focusing on their relevance and participation in defense and offense strategies in plant-pathogen interactions.The human microbiota is an array of microorganisms known to interact with the host and other microbes. These interactions can be competitive, as microbes must adapt to host- and microorganism-related stressors, thus producing toxic molecules, or cooperative, whereby microbes survive by maintaining homeostasis with the host and host-associated microbial communities. As a result, these microbial interactions shape host health and can potentially result in disease. In this review, we discuss these varying interactions across microbial species, their positive and negative effects, the therapeutic potential of these interactions, and their implications on our knowledge of human well-being.Background and Objectives Choanal atresia is the most common congenital malformation of the nose. Materials and Methods We have evaluated 24 CT images of children with choanal atresia treated at the Department of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology FM CU and the NICD Bratislava (Slovakia). In accordance with the methodology used by Slovis et al. (1985), we have measured parameters related to anomalous development in the nasal cavity vomer width, the width of soft atresia and the width of the air space of unilaterally developed choana. Results In the group of 24 patients, 11 (46%) were male and 13 (54%) were female. The age of patients at the time of CT imaging varied. Associated syndromes had been manifested in 11 (46%) children, with 7 (29%) patients having CHARGE syndrome. In 13 (54%) cases it was a bone membranous type of atresia, in 8 (33%) cases a membranous type, and in 3 (13%) patients a bone type. Among the group of patients, unilateral disorder was present in 13 (54%) patients and bilateral in 11 (46%). Based on the Pearson's correlation test, we have found in the studied group that the width of the vomer correlates with age, and the vomer is wider in bone atresia than in the membranous ones. Based on determining the average vomer's width within the age groups 0-8 and >8-20, compared to the standard widths, we found that the vomer's widths reached the upper limits of the standard ±2 SD (cm) or even exceeded that limit. The same applies to the width in soft choanal atresia. On the other hand, the width of the developed choana in the case of unilateral atresia is almost standard. Conclusions The above findings are the basis for selecting the appropriate type of surgery. Standardized microindentation tests were applied to apical, medial, and cervical root sections of a mandibular human first molar to determine the spatial distribution of the hard tissue's properties (indentation modulus, indentation hardness, Martens hardness, indentation creep). Using an indentation mapping approach, the inhomogeneity of mechanical properties in longitudinal as well as in transversal directions were measured. As a result, the tooth showed strongly inhomogeneous material properties, which depended on the longitudinal and transversal positions. In the transversal cutting planes of the cervical, medial, apical sections, the properties showed a comparable distribution. A statistical evaluation revealed an indentation modulus between 12.2 GPa and 17.8 GPa, indentation hardness between 0.4 GPa and 0.64 GPa and an indentation creep between 8.6% and 10.7%. The established standardized method is a starting point for further investigations concerning the intensive description of the inhomogeneous mechanical properties of human dentin and other types of dentin.The article presents a study on the adhesion of thermoplastic films to a room temperature-hardening epoxy resin, which deals with an important question on sensor integration into fibre composites. By means of a morphological box, a test specimen is developed, which allows to test strength values for the adhesion of thermoplastic films to epoxy resin. Polyimide (PI), which is typically used as a carrier material for flexible sensors, is compared with the thermoplastics polyetherimide (PEI), polyethersulfone (PES) and polyamide 6 (PA6). To evaluate the spatial formation of the interface, images taken with a light microscope, fluorescence microscope and electron microscope and an energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis are presented. The images show that during the curing process of the epoxy resin the initially expected pronounced interphase does not form. In this respect, it is surprising that PEI achieves such a high adhesion strength even without extended interphase formation, that the failure of the test specimen occurs in the epoxy resin region at a tensile stress of 70 MPa and not at the interface between epoxy and PEI, as might initially be assumed. It is also surprising that PES exhibits the lowest adhesion strength of 5 MPa to room temperature-hardening epoxy resin, although in previous investigations it was often used as a soluble toughness modifier for epoxy resins. The tensile adhesion strength of PI to epoxy resin was found at 27 MPa and the tensile adhesion strength of PA6 to epoxy resin was found at 13 MPa. For sensor integration, the findings mean that flexible sensors on PEI substrates promise a low tendency to delaminate even in the room temperature-hardening epoxy resin used, while the other materials tested indicate an increased tendency to delaminate.The aim of this study is to investigate a multilayer structure made of polyethylene and polyamide by rotational molding. Due to the different polarity of these polymers, it is difficult to ensure enough adhesion between created layers. Two methods leading to improve adhesion are introduced. Plasma modification of polyethylene powder, after which new functional groups are bound to the treated surface, may enhance specific adhesion by forming hydrogen bonds with-CONH groups of polyamide. Different strategies of adding material to the mold give rise to complicated interlayer which increases joint strength by mechanism of the mechanical adhesion. Mechanical tests show a significant improvement of joint strength, where treated samples reached two-fold values of peel strength (7.657 ± 1.024 N∙mm-1) against the untreated sample (3.662 ± 0.430 N∙mm-1). During bending test, delamination occurred only in samples that were made of the untreated polyethylene. Adding polyamide during the melting stage of polyethylene powder in rotomolding resulted in the formation of entanglements which improve the peel strength almost eight times in comparison with the sample where the polyethylene was left to completely melt and create smooth interlayer surface.
