In two experiments, we asked children (4-7 years) to predict and explain about balance scale problems, whereby we either manipulated the length of the balance scale or the mass of the weights after half of the trials. In three out of four conditions, we found a change in Complexity for both hand movements and speech between first and second half of the task. In one of these conditions, we found a relation between the differences in Complexity and Diversity of hand movements and speech. Changes in spatiotemporal task properties thus often influenced both hand movements' and speech's flexibility, but there seem to be differences in how they did so. We provided many directions for future research, to further unravel the relations between hand movements, speech, task properties, variability, and cognitive development.Engineered culture substrates have proven invaluable for investigating the role of cell and extracellular matrix geometry in governing cell behavior. It promotes not only the decoupling of environmental degradation from economic development, but additionally the coupling of positive ecological development with economic development. Presently, most of the research on ecological civilization focuses on its indices and evaluation methods. However, there exist some gaps such as the use of incomplete scientific indicators, and insufficient practice caused by inadequate sample size. In this study, we first take the evaluation framework for ecological civilization pilot areas combined with academic research to construct a comprehensive framework and indicator system. Second, we calculate the Coupling Coordination Degree (CCD) for each of the pilot areas based on the entropy weight and identify typical industries that promote the coupling of ecology and economy. Third, we use the Relative Development Coefficient (RDC) to measure the development of ecology and economy between 2014 and 2019, and study the different kinds of development models for cities. Results of the study found that the regional economy is highly positive correlated with CCD, indicating a mutually reinforcing relationship between economic development and ecological development. Further, the RDC reveals that the level of urban ecological development is relatively higher at the stage of decoupling and coordination with economic system. Finally, strategic emerging industries are a common element in pilot areas with a high level of ecological development, as they offer higher economic output without the ecological degradation associated with traditional industries.Farmland abandonment is an important aspect of land cover land use (LCLU) that has both positive and negative effects on the environment. There is limited information regarding the spatial distribution of abandoned farmland in China. In this study, we 1) use a C5.0 decision tree classification based on a 250 m spatial resolution Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) time series to develop LCLU maps for the period 2000-2017; 2) produce time series maps of the abandoned farmland during the period 2002-2017 based on LCLU maps; and 3) analyze spatial distribution, intensity, trend, frequency, and recultivation in terms of farmland abandonment. The results show that the overall accuracy of the LCLU maps ranged from 85.45% to 90.56% over the study period (2002-2017). The average national rate of farmland abandonment was 5% over the period 2002-2017, with the lowest rate in 2002 and the highest in 2015. Approximately 60% of the 34 agricultural areas in China showed an increasing trend for abandonment including some of the main grain-producing areas such as the North China Plain and the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Abandoned farmland areas with an abandonment frequency of ≤ 3 y comprised 58.24% of the total area of abandoned farmland.
