Self-regulated motivation is associated with better behavior change, health, and hedonic well-being in the health domain. Meanwhile, there are evidences that eudaemonic well-being contributes to health. As well as reducing lifestyle diseases, the promotion of IKIGAI well-being (encompassing hedonic and eudaemonic well-being) has been targeted in Japan. However, little is known about the impact of IKIGAI well-being on the motivation for health. This study explored the relationships between autonomous motivation for eating and exercise for health, IKIGAI well-being, sense of coherence, and social support.

The participants were 622 Japanese (269 males and 353 females, aged 20 to 59years). They completed a questionnaire on motivation for healthy eating (MHE), exercise motivation for health (EMH), sense of coherence, social support, and IKIGAI well-being.

IKIGAI well-being was positively associated to the relative autonomy index (RAI)-MHE and RAI-EMH. Social support exerted a positive effect on sense of coherence and IKIGAI well-being; sense of coherence positively affected IKIGAI well-being. The invariances of the model across groups, such as gender, age, and subjective economic status, were verified using multiple-group structural equation models.

During sexual transmission, HSV targets epithelial cells, sensory peripheral pain neurons secreting the mucosal neuropeptide calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), and mucosal immune cells including Langerhans cells (LCs). We previously described a neuro-immune crosstalk, whereby CGRP inhibits LCs-mediated human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) transmission. Herein, to further explore CGRP-mediated anti-viral function, we investigated whether CGRP affects LCs infection with HSV. We found that both HSV-1 and HSV-2 primary isolates productively infect monocyte-derived LCs (MDLCs) and inner foreskin LCs. Moreover, CGRP significantly inhibits infection with both HSV subtypes of MDLCs and langerinhigh, but not langerinlow, inner foreskin LCs. For HSV-1, infection is mediated via the HSV-1-specific entry receptor 3-O sulfated heparan sulfate (3-OS HS) in a pH-depended manner, and CGRP down-regulates 3-OS HS surface expression, as well as abrogates pH dependency. For HSV-2, infection involves langerin-mediated endocytosis in a pH-independent manner, and CGRP up-regulates surface expression of atypical langerin double-trimer oligomers. Our results show that CGRP inhibits mucosal HSV infection by differentially modulating subtype-specific entry receptors and mechanisms in human LCs. CGRP could turn out useful for prevention of LCs-mediated HSV infection and HSV/HIV-1 co-infection.
Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD/Duchenne) is a progressive X-linked muscular disease with an overall incidence of 15,000 live male births. Recent availability in treatment for DMD raised the need of early diagnosis, and DMD became as a selective item of newborn screening (NBS) since Feb. 2021 in our center.

Dried blood spots (DBS) muscle-type creatine kinase (CK) isoform was measured with a commercialized kit with age-adjusted cutoffs. Subjects with an elevation of CK in the first screen were requested for a re-screen 2 weeks later. A DBS whole-exome sequencing (WES) panel for dystrophin and other neuromuscular-related genes was applied to confirm the diagnosis for subjects with persistent hyperCKemia.

During a 1-year period, 50,572 newborns (male 26,130) received DMD screening at a mean age of 2 days (SD 1 day). Among them, 632 (1.2%) had an elevated CK value. A re-screen at a mean age of 14 days (SD 8 days) revealed 14 subjects with persistent hyperCKemia, and DMD was confirmed in 3 of them. The incidence of DMD in Taiwan was 18,710 (95% CI 1 in 2,963 to 1 in 25,610) live birth males. Results of DMD DBS also assisted in Pompe newborn screening.

Of note, physiological differences among individuals with high (highs), medium (mediums), and low hypnotizability scores (lows) have been observed in the ordinary state of consciousness, thus independently from the induction of the hypnotic state, and in the absence of specific suggestions. The potential role of hypnotic assessment and its relevance to neurological diseases have not been fully explored. While current knowledge and therapies allow a better survival rate, there is a constant need to optimize rehabilitation treatments and quality of life. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of hypnotizability-related features and, specifically, to discuss the hypothesis that the stronger FE, the different mode of information processing, and the greater proneness to control pain and the activity of the immune system observed in individuals with medium-to-high hypnotizability scores have potential applications to neurology. Current evidence of the outcome of treatments based on hypnotic induction and suggestions administration is not consistent, mainly owing to the small sample size in clinical trials and inadequate control groups. We propose that hypnotic assessment may be feasible in clinical routine and give additional cues into the treatment and rehabilitation of neurological diseases.
To evaluate the effect of long-term continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment on disease severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

We analyzed results from the Sleep Apnea and Cardiovascular Events (SAVE) studyinvolving participants recruited at the Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital, China. Participants were aged 45-75years with a history of cardiac or cerebrovascular disease. OSA was confirmed by home sleep apnea testing (HSAT). Participants were randomized to receive CPAP plus standard cardiovascular care (CPAP group) or standard care alone (UC group) and followed for several years. At the study conclusion, surviving participants were invited to repeat HSAT. Changes in OSA indicators were compared by independent samples t-tests and subgroup analysis was implied among groups stratified by OSA severity.

One hundred two adults were recruited (51 per group) and followed for 48.0 ± 14.5months. Daily CPAP usage in the CPAP group was 4.1 ± 1.9h. AHI decreased from baseline to end-of-study in both CPAP and UC groups (- 5.0 (- 12.5,2.0), P = 0.000; - 4.0 (- 12.5,1.5), P = 0.007, respectively), with no between-group difference (P = 0.453). An improvement in nadir SpO
showed from baseline to end-of-study in the CPAP but not UC group (2.3% ± 6.1%, P = 0.011 and - 0.7% ± 7.6%, P = 0.511, respectively; between-group difference P = 0.032). Subgroup analysis shows that CPAP could improve AHI in patients withmoderate OSA (- 8.0 (- 11.8, - 2.8) in CPAP group, - 2.0 (- 0.8,6.0) in UC group, P = 0.022) and improve nadir SpO
in patients withsevere OSA (5.0 (- 0.8, - 0.8,7.0) in CPAP group, 0.0 (- 8.5,2.5) in UC group, P = 0.032).

Long-term CPAP use did not result in clinically significant changes in AHI or ODI overall but showed variable effects stratified by OSA severity.

The untargeted UHPLC-QTOF-MS metabolomics of more than 50 samples from plant, fungi and algae lead to the discovery of a small group of sulfated metabolites derived from phenolic acids.
