We recently demonstrated that chronic dietary exposure to a mixture of pesticides at low-doses induced sexually dimorphic obesogenic and diabetogenic effects in adult mice. Perinatal pesticide exposure may also be a factor in metabolic disease etiology. However, the long-term consequences of perinatal pesticide exposure remain controversial and largely unexplored.
Here we assessed how perinatal exposure to the same low-dose pesticide cocktail impacted metabolic homeostasis in adult mice.
Six pesticides (boscalid, captan, chlopyrifos, thiachloprid, thiophanate, and ziram) were incorporated in food pellets. During the gestation and lactation periods, female (F0) mice were fed either a pesticide-free or a pesticide-enriched diet at doses exposing them to the tolerable daily intake (TDI) level for each compound, using a 11 body weight scaling from humans to mice. All male and female offsprings (F1) were then fed the pesticide-free diet until 18weeks of age, followed by challenge with a pesticide-free high-f fingerprints, but did not significantly influence the development of HFD-induced metabolic diseases.
Perinatal pesticide exposure induced sustained sexually dimorphic perturbations of the urinary and fecal metabolic fingerprints, but did not significantly influence the development of HFD-induced metabolic diseases.Previous epidemiological studies primarily examined the temperature-related mortality burden of all-cause or cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and respiratory diseases. However, evidence on the heat- and cold-attributable mortality burden from other specific causes is limited. This paper aimed to systematically examine the association of heat and cold with a comprehensive spectrum of plausible temperature-related diseases, and to estimate the mortality burdens attributable to heat and cold. In the time-series study of 11 cities in Jiangsu, China, distributed lag non-linear models were applied to estimate city-specific temperature-mortality associations, and then meta-analysis was conducted to pool the estimates. A total of 1,368,648 cases of death were included in this study. Both extreme heat and cold were associated with increased mortality risks from all-cause, CVD, respiratory diseases, nervous diseases, and external causes. Short-term exposures to heat and cold were associated with excess burden of mortalityudied causes such as diabetes and Alzheimer's and dementia. Future research is needed to confirm the substantial mortality burden of heat and cold.Focusing attention on a movement effect that is farther away from the body (distal external focus) has been shown to result in more effective motor performance or learning than focusing on an effect that is in greater proximity to the body (proximal focus). The present study examined whether the distance of the external focus impacts the performance of relatively inexperienced and experienced performers differently. Low-skilled and high-skilled volleyball players passed a volleyball continuously to a target. In the proximal focus condition they were asked to concentrate on the "platform," whereas in the distal focus condition they were instructed to concentrate on the target. The high-skilled group's accuracy scores were higher in the distal relative to proximal focus condition. However, low-skilled players' accuracy scores was greater in the proximal relative to distal focus condition. We argue that the optimal distance of the external focus depends on the level of expertise when the skill requires a specific movement technique. An external focus on that technique seems to be more advantageous for low-skilled performers. In contrast, when the movement pattern has become more automatic (high-skilled performers), a focus on the overall movement effect is more beneficial.
Due to the rapid increase in healthcare costs of low back pain (LBP), it is important to provide clinically effective and cost-effective interventions to individuals with the condition.
To evaluate all recent economic evaluations of physiotherapeutic interventions for patients with LBP.
A literature search of Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, MEDLINE, the National Health Service Economic Evaluation Database, Health Technology Assessment and Database of Abstracts of Review of Effects (January 2008 to October 2018) was undertaken.
Randomised controlled trials and cohort studies that assessed the cost- effectiveness of physiotherapeutic interventions on patients with LBP compared with a control group were included in this review. A Consolidated Health Economic Evaluation Reporting Standards checklist was used to assess the quality of studies.
Two authors extracted data independently. A descriptive synthesis was conducted to summarise the data.
In total, 1531 articles were identified and 11 studies met the inclusion criteria for this review. The total number of study participants in this review was 2633 and their ages ranged from 18 to 80 years. The duration of LBP in these patients ranged from 3 weeks to 1 year. Excluding one study, all studies reported that the physiotherapeutic intervention was cost-effective compared with the control arm. Meta-analysis was not possible due to heterogeneity of the studies.

Systematic review registration number CRD 42018089773.Bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) is a prevalent pathogen in the New Zealand cattle industries, yet few studies to date have evaluated the economics of BVDV in pastoral dairy and beef herds to help inform management decisions. To address this knowledge gap, we developed stochastic individual-based simulation models to represent the transmission dynamics of BVDV in typical spring-calving dairy and beef farms in New Zealand. The models conservatively estimated the direct losses due to a BVDV outbreak at NZ$ 22.22 and NZ$ 41.19 per mixed-age cow per year for a naïve dairy and beef farm, respectively, over a 5-year period. The greatest economic impacts for the dairy farm occurred when persistently infected replacement heifers joined the lactating cow group and caused transient infection of cows to drop in milk production, whereas the greatest impacts for the beef farm was through the loss of fattening stock for sale due to lowered pregnancy rates. Various combinations of diagnostic testing, vaccination, and biosecurity measures were then explored to evaluate the cost-efficiency of different strategies for controlling BVDV at the farm-level. Providing farmers with the estimates of economic impacts of BVDV in their herds may further encourage the uptake of control measures, but close collaboration with a veterinarian to determine the optimal strategy for their unique farm circumstances is still required.In the tilt illusion, the orientation of a central stimulus appears tilted away from a surrounding stimulus when angular difference is between 0 deg and 50 deg. Studies have repeatedly shown that the tilt illusion exhibits the strongest effect with the angular difference around 15 deg and this angular tuning is robust to various changes in stimulus parameters. We revisited the well-reported angular tuning of the tilt illusion, in relation to the recently-reported modulation of illusion magnitude by stimulus duration. We examined the tilt illusion with a wide range of stimulus duration (10-640 ms) and angular difference (7.5-75.0 deg). The results confirmed that the peak magnitude of the tilt illusion increased with shorter durations. However, we also found that the position of the peak shifted to larger angular differences with shorter durations. Evidently, the angular tuning profile of the tilt illusion is not fixed but can change with stimulus duration. The peak shift may be explained if orientation-selective lateral inhibition responsible for the tilt illusion sharpens its tuning over time.Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (Np-TiO2) have become the common component of sunscreen cosmetic products. Np-TiO2 can affect especially aquatic ecosystems health, including aquatic organisms such as fish. It is therefore necessary to acquire a better understanding of the effect of Np-TiO2 on aquatic organisms. This study evaluated the biological effects of Np-TiO2 on Danio rerio, such as survival rate and weight change and, in particular, the Ti content or retention in the intestine and liver, as well as the activities of catalase and superoxide dismutase enzymes. In addition, the structure of the intestine, kidney, and liver was investigated through histological analysis. Ninety zebrafish were used, randomly divided into three treatment-groups a control group (fed with food without adding Np-TiO2) and two groups of fish fed with food containing Np-TiO2 exposed for 7 and 14 days. The amount of Ti in the liver and intestine was measured using atomic absorption spectrophotometry coupled to a graphite furnace (Ght losses were recorded among fish in all groups over the duration of the experiment.Accurate and fast liver segmentation remains a challenging and important task for clinicians. Segmentation algorithms are slow and inaccurate due to noise and low quality images in computed tomography (CT) abdominal scans. Chan-Vese is an active contour based powerful and flexible method for image segmentation due to superior noise robustness. However, it is quite slow due to time-consuming partial differential equations, especially for large medical datasets. This can pose a problem for a real-time implementation of liver segmentation and hence, an efficient parallel implementation is highly desirable. Another important aspect is the contrast of CT liver images. Liver slices are sometimes very low in contrast which reduces the overall quality of liver segmentation. Hence, we implement cross-modality guided liver contrast enhancement as a pre-processing step to liver segmentation. GPU implementation of Chan-Vese improves average speedup by 99.811 (± 7.65) times and 14.647 (± 1.155) times with and without enhancement respectively in comparison with the CPU. Metabolism inhibitor Average dice, sensitivity and accuracy of liver segmentation are 0.656, 0.816 and 0.822 respectively on the original liver images and 0.877, 0.964 and 0.956 respectively on the enhanced liver images improving the overall quality of liver segmentation.Recently, there has been a demand for the replacement of chemical sunscreens with natural compounds that could prevent or restore UV-induced skin damage. Here, we investigated the photoprotective influence of the Melaleuca leucadendron ethanolic flower extract (EEMec) on factors involved in cellular and molecular UVB-induced oxidative stress in human skin keratinocytes (HaCaT). The phytochemical constituents, antioxidant potential by DPPH assay, content of total phenolic and flavonoid compounds in EEMec were evaluated. HaCaT cells were treated with EEMec followed by irradiation with UVB. CAT activity; GSH and ROS levels; and SOD1, GPx, CAT and COX-2 expression assays were employed to verify the oxidative stress, as well as EEMec effect on transmembrane transport, and pro-inflammatory and pro-apoptotic protein expression. EEMec reverted the viability loss of HaCaT cells after irradiation with UVB, exhibited significant antioxidant capacity and free radical scavenging activity in vitro, inhibited COX-2 expression and ensure protection of DNA-damage.
