We conclude that as more evidence is generated in this field, it will be essential that oncology healthcare providers are aware of the prevalent use of these modalities by their patients and cancer centers include Integrative Oncology trained physicians and other healthcare professionals in their team to discuss and recommend evidence-based integrative oncology therapies alongside conventional cancer treatments to their patients. In recent times, the use of natural products has gained momentum, either as a treatment or as adjuvants for other drugs in the treatment of different conditions. Propolis is a natural substance produced by bees which has proven useful for treating periodontal disease. This systematic review and meta-analysis gather evidence of the effectiveness of propolis in this kind of condition. The MEDLINE, CENTRAL, PubMed, EMBASE and Web of Science databases were searched for scientific articles to identify the findings published up to October 2020. The MeSH phrases used in the search were "periodontal diseases AND propolis treatment"; "gingivitis AND propolis treatment"; "periodontitis AND propolis treatment"; "propolis treatment AND oral health"; "propolis AND oxidative stress AND periodontitis". The Boolean operator "AND" was used to combine the searches. Randomized trials where propolis was used in the treatment of different periodontal conditions were included. Non-randomized clinical studies were systematically reviewed and 224 studies were detected, eight of which met the criteria for inclusion in the meta-analysis. Only three of these were selected for quantitative synthesis. In conclusion, propolis is safe to use and can improve the results of periodontal disease treatment, reducing probing pocket depth compared with treatment with a placebo (difference in means, fixed effects -0.67 [95% CI -0.84, -0.50]).In addition to specific antibiotic resistance, the formation of bacterial biofilm causes another level of complications in attempts to eradicate pathogenic or harmful bacteria, including difficult penetration of drugs through biofilm structures to bacterial cells, impairment of immunological response of the host, and accumulation of various bioactive compounds (enzymes and others) affecting host physiology and changing local pH values, which further influence various biological functions. In this review article, we provide an overview on the formation of bacterial biofilm and its properties, and then we focus on the possible use of phage-derived depolymerases to combat bacterial cells included in this complex structure. On the basis of the literature review, we conclude that, although these bacteriophage-encoded enzymes may be effective in destroying specific compounds involved in the formation of biofilm, they are rarely sufficient to eradicate all bacterial cells. Nevertheless, a combined therapy, employing depolymerases together with antibiotics and/or other antibacterial agents or factors, may provide an effective approach to treat infections caused by bacteria able to form biofilms. We provide an extensive and systematic investigation of exciton dynamics in droplet epitaxial quantum dots comparing the cases of (311)A, (001), and (111)A surfaces. Despite a similar s-shell exciton structure common to the three cases, the absence of a wetting layer for (311)A and (111)A samples leads to a larger carrier confinement compared to (001), where a wetting layer is present. This leads to a more pronounced dependence of the binding energies of s-shell excitons on the quantum dot size and to the strong anti-binding character of the positive-charged exciton for smaller quantum dots. In-plane geometrical anisotropies of (311)A and (001) quantum dots lead to a large electron-hole fine interaction (fine structure splitting (FSS) ∼100 μeV), whereas for the three-fold symmetric (111)A counterpart, this figure of merit is reduced by about one order of magnitude. In all these cases, we do not observe any size dependence of the fine structure splitting. Heavy-hole/light-hole mixing is present in all the studied cases, leading to a broad spread of linear polarization anisotropy (from 0 up to about 50%) irrespective of surface orientation (symmetry of the confinement), fine structure splitting, and nanostructure size. These results are important for the further development of ideal single and entangled photon sources based on semiconductor quantum dots. The bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is the most common congenital cardiac malformation associated with aortopathy. The current study provides surgical clinical data on the patient characteristics and long-term survival of this less common adult purely BAV population undergoing surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) with concomitant aortic surgery. Adult patients with purely BAV who underwent SAVR and concomitant aortic surgery were included. Prevalence, predictors of survival, and outcomes for this patient population were analyzed. A total of 48 patients (mean age 58.7 ± 13.2 years, 33% female) with purely BAV underwent SAVR and concomitant aortic surgery between 1987 and 2016. ML385 molecular weight The majority (62%) of the patients had pure aortic stenosis (AS). A total of 12 patients died. Survival was 92%, 73%, and 69% at 1, 5, and 20 years of follow-up. At 15 years of follow-up, the survival was close to that of the Dutch population, with a relative survival of 77%. Adult patients with a purely bicuspid aortic valve morphology undergoing SAVR and concomitant aortic root and/or ascending aorta present with excellent survival.
Substance use in European adolescents remains a serious health concern. Assessing what affects adolescents' substance use is crucial for implementing effective prevention. This study aims to examine alcohol and cannabis use-related behavioral, social, and attitudinal variables that might directly be considered to guide prevention responses for adolescents.

Cross-sectional data of 78,554 15-16-year-old school students from the 2011 European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs (ESPAD) from 26 European countries were analyzed. Self-reported drunkenness in the last 30 days and cannabis use in the last 12 months served as dependent variables. To investigate which factors are associated with risky substance use, multivariable logistic regressions were used.

17.7% of respondents reported drunkenness in the last 30 days, and 14.9% used cannabis in the last 12 months. The most important predictor for risky substance use was the perception that most/all of their friends engaged in substance use behavior, followed by lack of parental support, low personal adherence to rules, and low school performance.
