01). Attainment of higher levels of education and lower annual household income were also associated with a greater risk of sleep disorders (P less then 0.01). Further, logistic regression analysis indicated that older adults with sleep disorders had a greater risk of being hypertensive (P less then 0.01). Conclusions Sleep disorders are highly prevalent in rural southwest China. Future interventions to improve sleep quality would benefit from tailoring to address individual SES. Improving sleep quality profoundly reduces prevalence of hypertension.Temporary events such as music festivals are often organized in places that are not connected to a sewage network. As such, the waste (water) generated and discharged can place a heavy burden on the environment. A mobile vertical flow constructed wetland (MCW) with an area of 15 m2 was constructed, optimized and operated for three years treating grey water (GW) as well as grey and black water (GW + BW) at different festival locations to tackle this problem. During the initial development phase, the appropriate influent type (GW and/or GW + BW) was determined and challenge tests with pre-settled diluted domestic waste water (mimicking GW) were carried out to determine the maximal allowable loading rate. The MCW was able to treat both types of water. However, for further experiments GW was selected as the discharge limits could not be met when treating GW + BW. The challenge tests demonstrated that the MCW could be operated at a maximal allowable hydraulic loading rate of 1.1 m3·m-2·d-1, corresponding to mass loading rates of 68 gTSS·m-2·d-1, 160 gCOD·m-2·d-1 and 137 gBOD·m-2·d-1. During treatment of GW, the MCW achieved effluent concentrations for respectively chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD), total suspended solids (TSS) and total phosphorus (TP) of 43 mg·L-1, 16 mg·L-1, 2.7 mg·L-1 and 1.7 mgP·L-1. This corresponds to a removal of 90% (COD), 95% (BOD), 97% (TSS) and 76% (TP) respectively. Total nitrogen removal was 25% (from 45 mgN·L-1 to 34 mgN·L-1) as particularly denitrification was not complete. selleck chemical As a further development, the MCW was coupled to a drinking water treatment system using ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis (UF-RO) membranes to produce potable water on site. The drinking water system produced potable water that met the legislative criteria. As such, a sustainable and mobile water treatment system aiming at producing potable water at temporary events was demonstrated.Chromatographic separation of the extracts of the Australian rainforest plant Ternstroemia cherryi led to the isolation of five undescribed barrigenol-like triterpenoids, ternstroenols A - E, from the fruits and three known ones from the leaves. Ternstroenols A - E represent a new form of structural diversity, being the first in its kind to incorporate a trans- 2, 4, 6- decatrienoyl moiety at C-22. The structures of the ternstroenols were assigned by detailed spectroscopic analysis, degradation and chemical derivatization. All compounds exhibited potent anti-inflammatory activity in LPS and IFN- γ activated RAW 264.7 macrophages, with IC50 values as low as 0.7 μM. Despite the remarkable potency, high levels of unwanted cell growth inhibition was also observed, which prompted their cytotoxic evaluation in U87/U251 human glioblastoma cell lines. Background An experiment was conducted to reveal why the Argali hybrid sheep are susceptible to Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae infection, the causative agent of mycoplasma ovipneumonia, a chronic respiratory disease that is harmful to the sheep industry. Results After nine Argali hybrid sheep, divided into three groups, were experimentally infected with an M. ovipneumoniae strain at 0, 4 and 14 days, transcriptome profiling of lung tissues was performed by deep RNA sequencing, using the Illumina platform. Analysis of differentially expressed genes was performed to determine concomitant gene-specific temporal patterns of mRNA expression in the lungs after M. ovipneumoniae infection. 156 differentially expressed genes (44 up-regulated, 112 down-regulated) were found when comparing transcriptomic data at 4 and 0 days post-infection, and 367 (35 up-regulated, 332 down-regulated) when comparing 14 versus 0 days post-infection. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway analysis showed that the differentially expressed genes at 4 and 14 versus 0 days post-infection were enriched in 109 and 150 pathways, respectively, and the Primary immunodeficiency pathway was considered most closely related to MO infection (p less then .01). Hyper-IgM syndrome was identified based on the B-cell Immunodeficiency signaling pathway from differentially expressed genes related to M. ovipneumoniae infection. Gene Ontology analysis showed that differentially expressed genes in different groups were enriched for 497 and 928 terms, where those most closely related to M. ovipneumoniae infection are ciliated motor damage (p less then .01). Conclusions The situation that ciliary movement is significantly inhibited and B cells in immunodeficiency are possibly the most important reason why Argali hybrid sheep are susceptible to MO.Background Collar-related pressure ulcers (CRPU) are a problem in trauma patients with a suspicion of cervical cord injury patients. Indentation marks (IM), skin temperature (Tsk) and comfort could play a role in the development of CRPU. Two comparable cervical collars are the Stifneck® and Philadelphia®. However, the differences between them remain unclear. Aim To determine and compare occurrence and severity of IM, Tsk and comfort of the Stifneck® and Philadelphia® in immobilized healthy adults. Methods This single-blinded randomized controlled trial compared two groups of immobilized participants in supine position for 20 min. Results All participants (n = 60) generated IM in at least one location in the observed area. Total occurrence was higher in the Stifneck®-group (n = 95 versus n = 69; p = .002). Tsk increased significantly with 1.0 °C in the Stifneck®-group and 1.3 °C in the Philadelphia®-group (p = .024). Comfort was rated 3 on a scale of 5 (p = .506). Conclusion The occurrence of IM in both groups was high. In comparison to the Stifneck®, fewer and less severe IM were observed from the Philadelphia®. The Tsk increased significantly with both collars; however, no clinical difference in increase of Tsk between them was found. The results emphasize the need for a better design of cervical collars regarding CRPU.This study, based on new and high quality in situ observations, quantifies for the first time, the individual contributions of light-absorbing aerosols (black carbon (BC), brown carbon (BrC) and dust) to aerosol absorption over the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) and the Himalayan foothill region, a relatively poorly studied region with several sensitive ecosystems of global importance, as well as highly vulnerable populations. The annual and seasonal average single scattering albedo (SSA) over Kathmandu is the lowest of all the locations. The SSA over Kathmandu is less then 0.89 during all seasons, which confirms the dominance of light-absorbing carbonaceous aerosols from local and regional sources over Kathmandu. It is observed here that the SSA decreases with increasing elevation, confirming the dominance of light absorbing carbonaceous aerosols at higher elevations. In contrast, the SSA over the IGP does not exhibit a pronounced spatial variation. BC dominates (≥75%) the aerosol absorption over the IGP and the Himalayan foothills throughout the year. Higher BC concentration at elevated locations in the Himalayas leads to lower SSA at elevated locations in the Himalayas. The contribution of dust to aerosol absorption is higher throughout the year over the IGP than over the Himalayan foothills. The aerosol absorption over South Asia is very high, exceeding available observations over East Asia, and also exceeds previous model estimates. This quantification will be valuable as observational constraints to help improve regional simulations of climate change, impacts on the glaciers and the hydrological cycle, and will help to direct the focus towards BC as the main contributor to aerosol-induced warming in the region. Background Recent studies have reported inconsistent associations between maternal residential green space and preterm birth (PTB, born less then 37 completed gestational weeks). In addition, windows of susceptibility during pregnancy have not been explored and potential interactions of green space with air pollution exposures during pregnancy are still unclear. Objectives To evaluate the relationships between green space and PTB, identify windows of susceptibility, and explore potential interactions between green space and air pollution. Methods Birth certificate records for all births in California (2001-2008) were obtained. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was used to characterized green space exposure. Gestational age was treated as a time-to-event outcome; Cox proportional hazard models were applied to estimate the association between green space exposure and PTB, moderately PTB (MPTB, gestational age less then 35 weeks), and very PTB (VPTB, gestational age less then 30 weeks), aftations than those in the other time periods, especially during the 4th gestational month (NDVI 2000 m HR = 0.970, 95% CI 0.965-0.975). We identified consistent positive additive and multiplicative interactions between decreasing green space and higher air pollution. Conclusion This large study found that maternal exposure to residential green space was associated with decreased risk of PTB, MPTB, and VPTB, especially in the second trimester. There is a synergistic effect between low green space and high air pollution levels on PTB, indicating that increasing exposure to green space may be more beneficial for women with higher air pollution exposures during pregnancy. Background The World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) are developing joint estimates of the work-related burden of disease and injury (WHO/ILO Joint Estimates), with contributions from a large network of individual experts. Evidence from mechanistic data and prior studies suggests that exposure to long working hours may cause stroke. In this paper, we present a systematic review and meta-analysis of parameters for estimating the number of deaths and disability-adjusted life years from stroke that are attributable to exposure to long working hours, for the development of the WHO/ILO Joint Estimates. Objectives We aimed to systematically review and meta-analyse estimates of the effect of exposure to long working hours (three categories 41-48, 49-54 and ≥55 h/week), compared with exposure to standard working hours (35-40 h/week), on stroke (three outcomes prevalence, incidence, and mortality). Data sources A protocol was developed and published, applying the Navigation Gu for the burden of stroke attributable to exposures to working 48-54 and ≥55 h/week appears evidence-based, and the pooled effect estimates presented in this systematic review could be used as input data for the WHO/ILO Joint Estimates.
