Periventricular nodular heterotopias (PVNH) are areas of neurons abnormally located in the white matter that might be involved in physiological cortical functions. Autoscopic hallucinations are changes in self-consciousness determined by a mismatch in integration of multiple sensory inputs. Our goal is to highlight the brain network involved in generation of autoscopic hallucination elicited by electrical stimulation of a PVNH in a drug resistant epilepsy patient. Our patient was explored using stereo-electroencephalography with electrodes covering the right posterior temporal PVNH and the adjacent cortex. Direct electrical high frequency stimulation of the PVNH elicited autoscopic hallucinations mainly involving the face and upper trunk. We then used multiple modalities to determine brain connectivity single pulse electrical stimulation of the PVNH and stimulation-evoked potentials were used to highlight resting state effective connectivity. High-frequency stimulation using alternating polarity pulses enabled us to identify the network involved, time-locked to the clinical effect and to map symptom-related effective connectivity. Functional connectivity using a non-linear regression method was used to determine dependencies between different cortical regions following the stimulation. Finally, structural connectivity was highlighted using deterministic fiber tracking. Multi-modal connectivity analysis identified a network involving the PVNH, occipital and temporal neocortex, fusiform gyrus and parietal cortex.Difficulty in acquiring object clitics (OCs), and the omission of OCs more specifically, is used as a marker of developmental language disorder (DLD) in children learning French. Research also suggests that OCs are a complex morphosyntactic property of French and, as such, they could be particularly taxing for working memory (WM) resources. In light of previous research, it seems more likely that difficulties with OCs could be a marker for atypical early language acquisition. Children receiving a cochlear implant (CI) represent a case of delayed language exposure linked to a lack of early auditory exposure. Few studies have investigated the production of clitics in children with CIs. Studies suggest that children with CIs make significantly more clitic omissions on tasks of clitic production than typically-developing (TD) children. To our knowledge, no study has looked at clitic comprehension in children with CIs learning French or at the relationship between WM and performance on tasks of OCs in this population. The present study aimed at examining the production and comprehension of OCs, as well as the relationship between clitic omission and WM, in both typically-developing monolinguals children and CI recipients learning French. Children with CIs performed significantly lower than the control group on both comprehension and production tasks. Clitic omission was significantly related to WM, but only in the CI group suggesting a differential relationship between early auditory experience, WM, and language acquisition.Previous research suggests oral and written language can act as barometers of an individual's cognitive function, potentially providing a screening tool for the earliest stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other forms of dementia. Idea density is a measure of the rate at which ideas, or elementary predications, are expressed and may provide an ideal measure for early detection of deficits in language. Previous research has shown that when no restrictions are set on the topic of the idea, a decrease in propositional idea density (PID) is associated with an increased risk of developing AD. However, this has been limited by moderate sample sizes and manual transcribing. Technological advancement has enabled the automated calculation of PID from tools such as the Computerized Propositional Idea Density Rater (CPIDR). We delivered an online autobiographical writing task to older adult Australians from ISLAND (Island Study Linking Ageing and Neurodegenerative Disease). Linear regression models were fitted in R. We analysed text files (range 10-1180 words) using CPIDRv5 provided by 3316 (n = 853 males [25.7%], n = 2463 females [74.3%]) ISLAND participants. Over 358,957 words written in 3316 written autobiographical responses were analysed. Mean PID was higher in females (53.5 [±3.69]) than males (52.6 [±4.50]). Both advancing age and being male were significantly associated with a decrease in PID (p less then .001). Automated methods of language analysis hold great promise for the early detection of subtle deficits in language capacity. Although our effect sizes were small, PID may be a sensitive measure of deficits in language in ageing individuals and is able to be collected at scale using online methods of data capture. The primary function common to every neuron is communication with other neurons. Such cell-cell signaling can take numerous forms, including fast synaptic transmission and slower neuromodulation via secreted messengers, such as neuropeptides, dopamine, and many other diffusible small molecules. Individual neurons are quite diverse, however, in all particulars of both synaptic and neuromodulatory communication. Neuron classification schemes have therefore proven very useful in exploring the emergence of network function, behavior, and cognition from the communication functions of individual neurons. Selleckchem Veliparib Recently published single-cell mRNA sequencing data and corresponding transcriptomic neuron classifications from turtle, songbird, mouse, and human provide evidence for a long evolutionary history and adaptive significance of localized peptidergic signaling. Across all four species, sets of at least twenty orthologous cognate pairs of neuropeptide precursor protein and receptor genes are expressed in individually sparse but heavily overlapping patterns suggesting that all forebrain neuron types are densely interconnected by local peptidergic signals.
This study aimed to analyze the relationship between food insecurity and school meal consumption, adjusted for sociodemographic variables.
This cross-sectional study investigated households with children and adolescents living in Brazilian municipalities. A semistructured survey was administered to parents/guardians at a parent-teacher meeting to assess their socioeconomic conditions and access to food, using the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale to classify households as having food security or mild, moderate, or severe food insecurity. Parents and students were asked about the frequency of their consumption of school meals offered by the Brazilian School Food Program, which is one of the largest public policies in Brazil and offers free meals to all students in all public schools. Multinomial regression was performed to assess the relationship between food security and frequency of school meal consumption.
A total of 1705 students participated in the study, most of whom displayed some degree of food inschildren who are experiencing food insecurity, the program should also aim for greater equity.Dysfunctional lipid metabolism is a known cause of cancer development and progression, yet little is known about the underlying molecular mechanisms that contribute to cancer progression. In this study, we demonstrate that fatty acid binding protein 5 (FABP5) is elevated in colon cancer tissue and this increased expression is linked to upregulation of the hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) signaling pathway. Under physiologically in vivo mimicked conditions via a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based three-dimensional (3D) culture chip, FABP5-knockdown colon cancer cells exhibited attenuated cell growth throughout the culture period. FABP5 was found to regulate HIF-1α protein levels and gene expression levels within the HIF-1α signaling pathway under hypoxic conditions. Our results provide evidence that supports the use of FABP5 as a prognostic factor in colon cancer. The FABP5/HIF-1α axis is a promising target for ameliorating fatty acid-triggered cancer progression.Oxylipins constitute a huge class of compounds produced by oxidation of long-chain unsaturated fatty acids either chemically (by radicals such as reactive oxygen species, ROS) or enzymatically (by lipoxygenases, LOX; cyclooxygenases, COX; or cytochrome P450 pathways). This process generates fatty acids peroxides, which can then be further modified in a broad range to epoxy, hydroxy, keto, ether fatty acids, and also hydrolyzed to generate small aldehydes and alcohols. In general, oxylipins are present in almost all living organisms and have a wide range of signaling, metabolic, physiological, and ecological roles depending on the particular organism and on their structure. In plants, oxylipins have been extensively studied over the past 35 years. However, these studies have focused mainly on the jasmonates and so-called green leaves volatiles. The function of early LOX products (like keto and hydroxy fatty acids) is yet not well understood in plants, where they are mainly analyzed by indirect methods or by GC-MS what requires a laborious sample preparation. Here, we developed and validated a straightforward, precise, accurate, and sensitive method for quantifying oxylipins in plant tissues using HPLC-MS/MS, with a one-step extraction procedure using low amount of plant tissues. We successfully applied this method to quantify the oxylipins in different plant species and Arabidopsis thaliana plants treated with various biotic and abiotic stress conditions.
Odontoidectomy with preservation of the anterior C1 arch can be increasingly achieved by an endoscopic endonasal approach. It is controversial whether preservation of the anterior C1 arch after odontoidectomy can prevent instability of the craniovertebral junction (CVJ) and avoid posterior fixation. The aim of this research was to investigate the biomechanical effect of the preserved anterior C1 arch after odontoidectomy.
A validated finite element model of a whole cervical spine (occipital bone to T1) was constructed to study the biomechanical changes due to traditional odontoidectomy (TO) and odontoidectomy with preservation of the anterior C1 arch (OPC1).
The greatest biomechanical changes in the cervical spine model after TO and OPC1 occurred at C0-C1 and C1-C2. At C0-C1 and C1-C2, the motion changes of the TO and OPC1 models had no significant difference in flexion, extension and lateral bending. Compared with the intact model, motion increases of the two surgical models were both extremely significant at C1-C2 in extension (128.2% vs. 128.1%) and lateral bending (178% vs. 156%). In axial rotation, the TO approach produced more motions than the OPC1 approach, especially at C1-C2(90.3° under TO approach, and 74.6° under OPC1 approach).
Preservation of the anterior C1 arch after odontoidectomy can preserve the axial rotational motion at C0-C1 and C1-C2, whereas the motions in extension and lateral bending continue to have an extremely abnormal increase at C1-C2. Thus, instability of the CVJ still exists, and posterior internal fixation may also be required after OPC1.
