results of this study suggest that the burden of SCA was similar in Hispanic and White individuals and lower in Asian individuals. The Asian and Hispanic populations had shared SCA risk factors, which were different from those of the White population. These findings underscore the need for an improved understanding of race/ethnicity-specific differences in SCA risk.
Although racial disparities in acute pain control are well established, the role of patient analgesic preference and the factors associated with these disparities remain unclear.

To characterize racial disparities in opioid prescribing for acute pain after accounting for patient preference and to test the hypothesis that racial disparities may be mitigated by giving clinicians additional information about their patients' treatment preferences and risk of opioid misuse.

This study is a secondary analysis of data collected from Life STORRIED (Life Stories for Opioid Risk Reduction in the ED), a multicenter randomized clinical trial conducted between June 2017 and August 2019 in the emergency departments (EDs) of 4 academic medical centers. Participants included 1302 patients aged 18 to 70 years who presented to the ED with ureter colic or musculoskeletal back and/or neck pain.

The treatment arm was randomized to receive a patient-facing intervention (not examined in this secondary analysis) and a clinicids were considered separately, Black patients continued to have lower odds of being discharged with a prescription for opioids compared with White patients (among those who preferred opioids OR, 0.43 [95% CI, 0.24-0.77]; among those who did not prefer opioids OR, 0.45 [95% CI, 0.23-0.89]). These disparities were not eliminated in the treatment arm, in which clinicians were given additional data about their patients' treatment preferences and risk of opioid misuse.

In this secondary analysis of data from a randomized clinical trial, Black patients received different acute pain management than White patients after patient preference was accounted for. These disparities remained after clinicians were given additional patient-level data, suggesting that a lack of patient information may not be associated with opioid prescribing disparities.

Previous studies have indicated that gut microbiome may be associated with development of type 2 diabetes. However, these studies are limited by small sample size and insufficient for confounding. Furthermore, which specific taxa play a role in the development of type 2 diabetes remains unclear.

To examine associations of gut microbiome composition with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes in a large population-based setting controlling for various sociodemographic and lifestyle factors.

This cross-sectional analysis included 2166 participants from 2 Dutch population-based prospective cohorts the Rotterdam Study and the LifeLines-DEEP study.

The 16S ribosomal RNA method was used to measure microbiome composition in stool samples collected between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2013. The α diversity (Shannon, richness, and Inverse Simpson indexes), β diversity (Bray-Curtis dissimilarity matrix), and taxa (from domain to genus level) were identified to reflect gut microbiome composition.

Associat .001), C sensu stricto 1 (OR, 0.51; 95% CI, 0.40-0.65; P < .001), Intestinibacter (OR, 0.60; 95% CI, 0.48-0.76; P < .001), or Romboutsia (OR, 0.55; 95% CI, 0.44-0.70; P < .001) was associated with less type 2 diabetes. These bacteria are all known to produce butyrate.

In this cross-sectional study, higher microbiome α diversity, along with more butyrate-producing gut bacteria, was associated with less type 2 diabetes and with lower insulin resistance among individuals without diabetes. These findings could help provide insight into the etiology, pathogenesis, and treatment of type 2 diabetes.

Adherence to oral anticoagulants (OACs) per guideline recommendations is crucial in reducing ischemic stroke and systemic thromboembolism in high-risk patients with ischemic stroke and atrial fibrillation. However, data on OAC use are underreported in China.

To assess adherence to the Chinese Stroke Association or the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association's clinical management guideline-recommended prescription of OACs, the temporal improvement in adherence, and the risk factors associated with OAC prescriptions.

This quality improvement study was conducted at 1430 participating hospitals in the Chinese Stroke Center Alliance (CSCA) among patients with ischemic stroke and atrial fibrillation enrolled in the CSCA between August 1, 2015, and July 31, 2019.

Calendar year.

Adherence to the Chinese Stroke Association or the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association's clinical management guideline-recommended prescribing of OACs (warfarin and non-vitamin K OACs, including dabcribed an OAC at discharge.

This quality improvement study suggests that, despite significant improvement over time, OAC prescriptions remained low. Efforts to increase OAC prescriptions, especially non-vitamin K OACs, are needed for vulnerable subgroups by age, socioeconomic status, and presence of comorbid conditions.

Neurodevelopmental disorders have been proposed to involve alterations to epigenetic regulation, and epigenetic effects may extend to germline cells to affect later generations. Weight status may affect DNA methylation, and maternal weight before and during pregnancy has been associated with offspring DNA methylation as well as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

To assess whether a woman's weight before and during pregnancy is associated with ADHD in her grandchild.

This cohort study analyzed data from 19 835 grandmother-mother dyads and 44 720 grandchildren in the Nurses' Health Study II (NHS-II) cohort (2001-2013), a population-based prospective cohort study. Cluster-weighted generalized estimating equations were modeled to estimate the association of grandmother's prepregnancy body mass index (BMI) and gestational weight gain with grandchild risk of ADHD. Data analyses were conducted from May 2018 to April 2021. Grandmothers reported their height and weight before, and weight gain durinreased risk of ADHD among grandchildren, independent of grandmother gestational weight gain and independent of maternal prepregnancy weight status. For grain crops such as rice (Oryza sativa), grain size substantially affects yield. The histone acetyltransferase GRAIN WEIGHT 6a (GW6a) determines grain size and yield in rice. However, the gene regulatory network underlying GW6a-mediated regulation of grain size has remained elusive. In this study, we show that GW6a interacts with HOMOLOGUE OF DA1 ON RICE CHROMOSOME 3 (HDR3), a ubiquitin-interacting motif-containing ubiquitin receptor. Transgenic rice plants over-expressing HDR3 produced larger grains, whereas HDR3 knockout lines produce smaller grains compared to the control. Cytological data suggest that HDR3 modulates grain size in a similar manner to GW6a, by altering cell proliferation in spikelet hulls. Mechanistically, HDR3 physically interacts with and stabilizes GW6a in a ubiquitin-dependent manner, delaying protein degradation by the 26S proteasome. The delay in GW6a degradation results in dramatic enhancement of the local acetylation of H3 and H4 histones. Furthermore, RNA sequencing analysis and chromatin immunoprecipitation assays reveal that HDR3 and GW6a bind to the promoters of and modulate a common set of downstream genes. In addition, genetic analysis demonstrates that HDR3 functions in the same genetic pathway as GW6a to regulate grain size. Therefore, we identified the grain-size regulatory module HDR3-GW6a as a potential target for crop yield improvement.Induced host plant resistance is a potential approach to insect and disease management. Salicylic acid (SA) acts as a signal molecule to induce resistance in plants against sap-sucking insects. The effects of salicylic acid-induced resistance against common pistachio psylla, Agonoscena pistaciae Burckhardt and Lauterer, were investigated in well-watered and drought-stressed pistachio, Pistacia vera L. cv. Akbari, seedlings. Agonoscena pistaciae exhibited a significant preference for plants treated with SA as compared with untreated controls or those subjected to drought stress. Plants subjected to both drought stress and SA treatment were equivalently colonized as compared with control plants but were more attractive than those subjected to drought stress alone. Psyllid mortality increased on plants subjected to simultaneous drought stress and SA treatment as compared with controls. Salicylic acid treatment mediated production of defensive enzymes in plants, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), catalase (CAT), glutathione reductase (GR), guaiacol peroxidase (GPX) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO), as well as that of other metabolites such as phenol, malondialdehyde (MDA), H2O2, free amino acids, and pigments via phenylpropanoid pathways under conditions of drought. Despite increases in activity of detoxification (glutathione S transferase, carboxylesterase) and antioxidative (SOD, CAT, APX, phenoloxidase, GPX) enzymes in psyllids, reduced survival of A. Nimodipine purchase pistaciae on drought stressed and SA-treated plants was likely caused by excessive H2O2 and high phenolic content in treated plants. Based on our results, we postulate that salicylic acid-induced defense against A. pistaciae under drought conditions could be manipulated to enhance antibiosis against this key pest in pistachio orchards. For deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children living in an environment where their access to linguistic input and social interactions is compromised, learning emotions could be difficult, which may further affect social functioning. To understand the role of emotion in DHH children's social life, this study investigated emotional functioning (i.e., emotion recognition, empathy, emotion expression), and its relation with social functioning (i.e., social competence and externalizing behaviors), in 55 DHH children and 74 children with typical hearing (aged 3-10 years; Mage = 6.04). Parental reports on children's emotional and social functioning and factors related to DHH children's hearing were collected. Results showed similar levels of emotional and social functioning in children with and without hearing loss. Use of auditory intervention and speech perception did not correlate with any measures in DHH children. In both groups, higher levels of empathy related to higher social competence and fewer externalizing behaviors; emotion recognition and positive emotion expression were unrelated to either aspect of social functioning.
