Grindylow adalah hewan yang hidup di gulma/rumput bagian bawah danau daerah Britania Raya dan Irlandia. Mereka juga memiliki sifat keras dan agresif terhadap penyihir dan muggle. Trik untuk melawan mereka adalah mematahkan cengkeraman tangan mereka. Hal normalnya, jari-jari panjang mereka kuat namun pada kenyataannya sangat rapuh. Grindylow bertahan hidup dengan memakan ikan, ganggang, dan makhluk laut kecil. Mereka biasanya bukanlah ancaman tetapi telah dikenal menyerang manusia. Untuk alasan ini Grindylow dianggap ‘Dark Creatures’. Selain itu , Grindylow adalah hantu air dari legenda Yorkshire Inggris. Makhluk ini berwarna hijau pucat dengan tanduk runcing. Ia menempelkan wajah di kaca tangki, mengerut-ngerutkan wajah dan melemaskan jemarinya yang panjang dan kurus.
Makhluk-makhluk berbahaya ini menyukai kolam dan danau, di mana anak-anak kecil tak curiga yang terlalu dekat dengan air ditangkap dan diseret ke air. Di Lancashire, hantu yang sama dikenal dengan nama Jenny Greenteeth. Di daerah-daerah lain di Inggris ia dikenal dengan nama Nellie Long-Arms. Famili grindylow, Peg o' the Well, menghantui sumur-sumur.
