Makhluk air berwarna hijau pucat dan mempunyai kuku yang bisa mencekram kuat, namun mudah rapuh. Di Hogwarts sendiri makhluk ini terdapat di danau. Namun makhluk tersebut telah dilatih oleh para duyung sehingga para siswa tidak perlu khawatir. Hanya saja diluar sana makhluk ini sangat agresif dan berbahaya bagi para penyihir maupun para muggle.
Gryndillow ini termasuk Dark Creatures. Grindylow mendiami Danau Hitam di Sekolah Sihir Hogwarts, dan mereka menyerang siswa yang bersaing di Turnamen Triwizard 1994, dan membuat Fleur Delacour mundur . Dalam Harry Potter 'tahun ketiga di Hogwarts, Remus Lupin memberitahu Harry bahwa trik untuk melawan mereka adalah dengan mematahkan cengkeraman mereka; normalnya jari-jari panjang mereka kuat namun sangat rapuh.
