Grindylow merupakan makhluk berwarna hijau pucat, dengan gigi hijau serta tanduk runcing kecil dikepalanya. Memiliki jari jari panjang dan kuat walaupun rapuh untuk mencekik mangsanya, dan merupakan perenang yang cukup baik.
Grindylow ini menyukai kolam dan danau, di mana anak-anak kecil tak curiga yang terlalu dekat dengan air ditangkap dan diseret ke air. Di Lancashire, hantu yang sama dikenal dengan nama Jenny Greenteeth. Di daerah-daerah lain di Inggris ia dikenal dengan nama Nellie Long-Arms, Famili grindylow, Peg o' the Well, menghantui sumur-sumur.
Grindylow bertahan hidup dengan memakan ikan, ganggang, dan makhluk laut
kecil. Mereka biasanya bukanlah ancaman tetapi telah dikenal menyerang manusia, untuk alasan ini Grindylow dianggap Dark Creatures oleh kementrian sihir.
