In two experiments, we evaluated the role of both types of cognitive control in navigational search. Participants searched for a single hidden target in a floor array where the salience at the search locations varied (flashing or static lights). An a-priori rule of the probable location of the target (either under a static or a flashing light) was provided at the start of each experiment. Both experiments demonstrated a bias towards rule-adherent locations. Search errors, measured as revisits, were more likely to occur under the flashing rule for searching flashing locations, regardless of the salience of target location in Experiment 1 and at rule-congruent (flashing) locations in Experiment 2. Consistent with dual mechanisms of control, rule-adherent search was explained by engaging proactive control to guide goal-maintained search behaviour and by engaging reactive control to avoid revisits to salient (flashing) locations. Experiment 2 provided direct evidence for dual mechanisms of control using a Dot Pattern Expectancy task to distinguish the dominant control mode for a participant. Participants with a reactive control mode generated more revisits to salient (flashing) locations. These data point to complementary roles for proactive and reactive control in guiding navigational search and propose a novel framework for interpreting navigational search.Recent studies have demonstrated that in visual working memory (VWM), only items in an active state can guide attention. Further evidence has revealed that items with higher perceptual salience or items prioritised by a valid retro-cue in VWM tend to be in an active state. However, it is unclear which factor (perceptual salience or retro-cues) is more important for influencing the item state in VWM or whether the factors can act concurrently. Experiment 1 examined the role of perceptual salience by asking participants to hold two features with relatively different perceptual salience (colour vs. shape) in VWM while completing a visual search task. Guidance effects were found when either colour or both colour and shape in VWM matched one of the search distractors but not when shape matched. This demonstrated that the more salient feature in VWM can actively guide attention, while the less salient feature cannot. However, when shape in VWM was cued to be more relevant (prioritised) in Experiment 2, we found guidance effects in both colour-match and shape-match conditions. That is, both more salient but non-cued colour and less salient but cued shape could be active in VWM, such that attentional selection was affected by the matching colour or shape in the visual search task. This suggests that bottom-up perceptual salience and top-down retro-cues can jointly determine the active state in VWM.Wagner's replaced elements model (REM) theory implies that generalisation and summation tests depend on a common similarity parameter, but few studies have assessed generalisation and summation within the same experimental paradigm. IFN-γ increased kynurenine and interleukin-6 (IL-6) production by SCAP, without affecting the cell viability. IFN-γ-primed SCAP exhibited a decrease of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) mRNA levels, followed by an upregulation of glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor mRNA. Ex vivo, the co-culture of SCAP with neurons isolated from the rat dorsal root ganglion induced neurite outgrowth, accompanied by increased BDNF secretion, irrespective of IFN-γ priming. In vivo, the local application of SCAP reduced the mechanical and thermal hypersensitivity in Wistar rats that had been submitted to sciatic chronic constriction injury. The SCAP also reduced the pain scores, according to the evaluation of the Grimace scale, partially restoring the myelin damage and BDNF immunopositivity secondary to nerve lesion. Altogether, our results provide novel evidence about the regenerative effects of human SCAP, indicating their potential to handle nerve injury-related complications.
Rare nodules of heterotopic adrenocortical and hepatic tissue are reported in the placenta. A mechanism for adrenocortical tissue in the placenta has been perplexing, while hepatic tissue is generally considered related to yolk sac primordia. The clear cell morphology of these nodules is similar to the adrenal cortex of the adult; however, the fetal adrenal gland does not usually display clear cells.

We stained 9 placental nodules, histologically identical to "adrenocortical" heterotopia of the placenta, to determine whether adrenocortical differentiation could be confirmed. These cases include 3 archival cases initially diagnosed as "adrenocortical" heterotopia.

Immunohistochemical staining with steroid factor-1 (SF-1), HepPar-1, and Arginase-1 showed that these nodules of clear cells are actually hepatic (SF-1 negative, HepPar-1, and Arginase-1 positive). PAS staining suggests that glycogen accumulation is responsible for the clear cytoplasm. In contrast, a nodule of adrenocortical heterotopia near the testis and the adrenal gland from a 38-week-old neonatal autopsy case confirm SF-1 reactivity as expected.

Further, many current treatment strategies also fall short of producing regenerated tendon with the native properties of healthy tendon. There is increasing interest in the use of cell-instructive strategies to limit the intrinsic fibrotic response following injury and improve the regenerative capacity of tendon in vivo. We have established multifunctional, cell-instructive hydrogels for treating injured tendon that afford tunable control over the biomechanical, biochemical, and structural properties of the cell microenvironment. Specifically, we incorporated integrin-binding domains (RGDS) and assembled multifunctional collagen mimetic peptides that enable cell adhesion and elongation of stem cells within synthetic hydrogels of designed biomechanical properties and evaluated these materials using tarn vivo testing and indicate the promise of multifunctional and synthetic hydrogels for continued translation. Melatonin treatment is often recommended, yet supporting evidence is scarce. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of treatment with melatonin for sleep disturbance in youth with PPCS following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). This article is a secondary analysis of a clinical trial of melatonin compared with placebo to treat PPCS. Youth (8-18 years of age) with PPCS and significant sleep-related problems (SRPs) at 4-6 weeks post-injury were eligible. Exclusion criteria significant medical/psychiatric history; previous concussion/mTBI within 3 months. Treatment groups were placebo, melatonin 3 mg, or melatonin 10 mg. Primary outcome was change in SRPs measured using the Post-Concussion Symptom Inventory (PCSI) after 2 weeks of treatment. Secondary outcomes included change in actigraphy sleep efficiency, duration, onset latency, and wake-after-sleep-onset. Behavior was measured using Behaviour Assessment for Chehavior were otherwise not significantly different between treatment groups. Short-term melatonin is a well-tolerated treatment for sleep disturbance in youth with PPCS following mTBI. Mediated lists were related to CIs through non-presented mediators (e.g., cat, night, and bottom). Three speeded tasks were used to evaluate the time course of semantic activation of the CI a continuous semantic classification task (concrete/abstract decisions), a naming task (reading words aloud), or a recognition test (old/new memory decisions). False recognition, however, was stable across test positions. Collectively, these patterns suggest that spreading-activation processes decline, consistent with implicit spreading activation, and these processes may contribute to long-term false recognition.
