Insects have attracted much attention as a novel food source because of their environmental and nutritional advantages. In Latin America, some traditional groups consume insects; but the urban areas of Brazil resist adopting insects as food, like most Western countries. Thus, this study investigated the social representation of edible insects to understand the barrier behind this avoidance and to identify their segmentation in the Brazilian population. Seven hundred and eighty individuals were interviewed in all the Brazilian regions. The interview was composed of a word association task, a risk perception evaluation and two open-ended questions about the subject. According to the structural approach of social representation, Disgust was the primary association with edible insects. Three segments of consumers were identified using the risk perception of eating insects. The first segment, composed mainly of young men with higher educational levels, had the lowest risk perception, and the most positive attitude about entomophagy, their associations were also positive, such as Acceptance and Sustainability; the second had average risk perception and neutral attitude towards edible insects, with neutral and positive associations (e.g., Flavor and Culture); and the third, formed mostly by older women with lower educational level, presented the highest risk perception and the most negative attitude, and exhibited negative associations (Disgust, and Fear). The insect consumption in Brazil would be favored by using species of crickets, grasshoppers, ants, and their fried and roasted styles of preparations. Also, participants would eat insects mainly because of survival and curiosity.Mammalian adult females develop specialized body parts, namely mammary glands and uterus, and exhibit specialized maternal behavior, lactation/nursing and care for their offspring. As the brain plays an essential role in regulating related physiological functions in the body, the morphology or function of the mammalian brain has been modified to manage newly equipped structures and functions. However, this evolutionary process is largely unknown. Pou3f2/Brn2 is an evolutionarily remarkable gene as it contains mammal-specific base sequences encoding three stretches of homopolymeric amino acids (polyAAs) poly-glycine (polyG), poly-glutamine (polyQ), and poly-proline (polyP). Previously, we demonstrated that POU3F2 acquisition of mammal-specific polyAAs contributed to the establishment of behaviors characteristic of mammals. Here, we demonstrated that Pou3f2⊿ mice displayed basic features required for maternal care. However, Pou3f2⊿ mice exhibited deficits in the reproductive performance and maternal behavior, which were not fully improved by multiparas. Therefore, we extensively investigated pup retrieval behavior and discovered that the retrieval and the exploratory behaviors were impaired in Pou3f2⊿ female mice, but not in males. Altogether, our data suggest that POU3F2 acquisition of mammal-specific polyAAs contributes to the continuous awareness and curiosity needed for maternal interaction.Simple reaction time (RT) can vary by sex, with males generally displaying faster RTs than females. Although several explanations have been offered, the possibility that response preparation differences may underlie the effect of sex on simple RT has not yet been explored. A startling acoustic stimulus (SAS) can involuntarily trigger a prepared motor response (i.e., StartReact effect), and as such, RT latencies on SAS trials and the proportion of these trials demonstrating startle-reflex EMG in the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle are used as indirect measures of response preparation. The present study employed a retrospective analysis of composite individual participant data (IPD) from 25 datasets published between 2006 and 2019 to examine sex differences in response preparation. Linear mixed effects models assessed the effect of sex on control and SAS RT as well as the proportion of SAS trials with SCM activation while controlling for study design. Results indicated significantly longer control RT in female participants as compared to males (p = .017); however, there were no significant sex differences in SAS RT (p = .441) or the proportion of trials with startle reflex activity (p = .242). These results suggest that sex differences in simple RT are not explained by variations in levels of response preparation but instead may be the result of differences in perceptual processing and/or response initiation processes.Clinical evidence suggests that neuroinflammation, activation of the immune system, and the composition of the intestinal microbiota are involved in the pathology of depression. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a probiotic intervention using Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris LL95 in ameliorating mood disorders in a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced depression-like mouse model. C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into four groups and treated with 5 mg/kg LPS via intraperitoneal injection to induce depression-like symptoms, followed by oral administration of LL95 for one week (1 × 109 CFU/mouse). The animals were then subjected to a series of behavioral assessments, including open field, sucrose preference, and forced swimming tests. In addition, we evaluated the levels of reactive oxygen species, tumor necrosis factor-α, and interleukin-1β in the hippocampal tissues of these animals, and also determined their fecal lactic acid bacteria (LAB) content. LL95 intervention improved LPS-induced depression-like behaviors in mice, including decreased sucrose preference and increased immobility time in the forced swim test. LL95 treatment reversed the LPS-induced increase in hippocampal levels of reactive oxygen species and tumor necrosis factor-α, and of interleukin-1β to a lesser extent. Furthermore, LL95 intervention increased the fecal LAB content in these animals, suggesting changes in the gut microbiota. These findings suggest that LL95 exerts antidepressant-like effects in LPS-induced depression, which may be attributed to modulation of the oxidative status and pro-inflammatory cytokine expression in the hippocampus and alteration in the LAB content of the gut microbiota.
To determine the incidence and risk factors of primary angle-closure disease (PACD) over 6 years in a multi-ethnic Asian population.

Population-based, longitudinal study.

The Singapore Epidemiology of Eye Diseases study is a population-based cohort study conducted among adults aged 40 years or more. The baseline examination was conducted between 2004 and 2010, and the 6-year follow-up visit was conducted between 2011 and 2017. Of 6762 participants who attended the follow-up examination, 5298 at risk for primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) and 5060 at risk for PACD were included for analyses.

Standardized examinations including slit-lamp biomicroscopy, indentation gonioscopy, intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement, and static automated perimetry were performed. In this study, PACD includes primary angle-closure suspect (PACS), primary angle-closure (PAC), and PACG.

The 6-year PACD incidence was evaluated among an at-risk population excluding adults with baseline glaucoma, PACS, PAC, pseudophakia at.12), respectively.

Our study showed that the 6-year incidence of PACD was 3.50%. Increasing age, higher IOP, and shallower anterior chamber were associated with a higher risk of incident PACD, whereas late PSC was associated with a lower odds of PACD. These findings can aid in future projections and formulation of health care policies for screening of at-risk individuals for timely intervention.

With the growing awareness of MPs, atmospheric microplastics (AMPs) have been proposed as a new topic in recent years. Compared with the extensive studies on MPs in Marine and terrestrial environments, the studies of AMPs remain limited. In this study, sampling and analysis methods, occurrence, source analysis and health risk of AMPs were summarized and discussed. According to the different sampling methods, AMPs can be divided into suspension microplastics (SAMPs) and deposition microplastics (DAMPs). Previous studies have shown that SAMPs and DAMPs differ in composition and abundance, with SAMPs generally having a higher fraction of fragments. The mechanism of the migration of AMPs between different media was not clear yet. We further collated global data on the composition characteristics of MPs in soil and fresh water, which showed that the fragment MPs in soil and fresh water was higher than that in the atmosphere. Polymers in soil and fresh water were mainly PP and PE, while AMPs in the atmosphere were mainly PET. The shape composition of the MPs in both atmospheric and freshwater systems suggests that there may be the same dominant factor. The transport of AMPs and source apportionment were the important issues of current research, but both of them were at the initial stage. Therefore, AMPs needs to be further studied, especially for the source and fate, which would be conducive to understand the global distribution of AMPs. Furthermore, a standardized manual on sampling and processing of AMPs was also necessary to facilitate the comparative analysis of data between different studies and the construction of global models.Many researches mention the need to identify the land-based sources of riverine macrolitter but few field data on litter amount, composition and sources are available in the scientific literature. Describing macrolitter hotspot dynamics would actually allow a better estimation of fluxes in the receiving environments and a better identification of the more appropriate mitigation strategies. This study provides new insights in roadway macrolitter production rates, typologies and input sources (i.e. deliberate or accidental). The macrolitter from an 800 m portion of a highly frequented roadway (around 90,000 vehicles per day) was collected during almost one year. Typologies were defined using the OSPAR/TGML classification. Results show high annual loads of macrolitter (42.8 kg/yr/ha), suggesting significant contributions of the road runoff to the litter fluxes in urban stormwater. Over the course of a year, 88.5 kg of debris were collected, including 53.2 kg (60%) of plastic debris. In total, 36,439 items were characterized, of which 84% were plastics. The macrodebris collected present a low diversity of components with Top 10 items accounting for 92% by count and a majority of small and lightweight items like plastic fragments (31%) or cigarette butts (18%). Input sources were estimated for 43% of the mass collected in which 37.2% were deliberately littered and 62.8% were accidental leaks, illustrating a major contribution of uncovered trucks and unsecured loads. The accumulation rates show a linear correlation with the road traffic.
