Modifying the surface of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) produced by mechanical refinement with a variety of polymer functional groups in an entirely water-based system is challenging because only surface hydroxyl groups are accessible. To address this limitation, an entirely water-based, polymer modification scheme is developed. CNFs are functionalized with a reactive methacrylate functional group followed by subsequent grafting-through polymerization. This modification worked with a variety of water-soluble and water-insoluble (meth)acrylates and (meth)acrylamides, grafting up to 45 wt% polymer on to the CNFs. The reaction conditions introducing the methacrylate functional group are adjusted to vary the degree of functionality. Soxhlet extraction of modified samples demonstrates that the reactive methacrylate group is necessary to facilitate polymer grafting. The degree of functionalization of the polymers is studied via quantitative transmission IR spectroscopy and the morphology of the resulting cellulose nanofibrils is studied via a combination of optical, scanning electron, and atomic force microscopy. High levels of polymer modification do not significantly affect the micrometer-scale fibril morphology.Ultra-high field MRI offers many opportunities to expand the applications of MRI. We model peak movement with explicit population dynamics, parameterized with published microevolutionary estimates. In the UV-vis and fluorescence spectra, the absorption and emission bands were red-shifted as the number of fused anthracene units was increased. Larval and adult limb regeneration are commonly treated as roughly equivalent processes and, at least in part, as a recapitulation of embryonic development.

We compared larval limb development to regeneration of both larval and adult forelimbs and found that there are substantial differences in developmental pattern among larvae and adults. The larval pattern of preaxial dominance is absent in adult regenerates adult regenerates instead develop digits synchronously, and they do so before proximal autopodial elements have formed discrete aggregation zones. By contrast, larval regenerates follow a pattern of sequential digit formation from anterior to posterior, like their embryonic limb buds.

Based upon these morphological clues, we conclude that larval regenerates are unlikely to exhibit features of epimorphic regeneration seen in adults, but are more likely to represent a form of developmental regulation. Furthermore, we confirm that post-metamorphic limb regeneration is not a simple recapitulation of ontology at the morphological level. These distinctions may help to explain and interpret some experiments and observations of regeneration in neotenic or paedomorphic urodeles.

In Scotland, as elsewhere, there has been growing political and public interest in the function and process of parole accompanied by a lack of empirical research on the operation and effectiveness of parole.

Against the backdrop of a Scottish Government review of parole aimed, among other things, at improving the transparency of the process, the aim of the study was to explore the experiences of prisoners seeking early release on licence.

In conjunction with the Scottish Prison Service a national survey was conducted of 197 long-term prisoners who had experience of seeking early release on parole.

The survey revealed that prisoners did not have a clear understanding of parole and often did not feel fully engaged in the process.

Donor latent CMV infection increases cardiac-resident macrophages and T cells leading to increased inflammation, promoting allograft rejection. To investigate the role of cardiac-resident passenger macrophages in CMV-mediated TVS/CR, macrophages were depleted from latently ratCMV (RCMV)-infected donor allografts prior to transplantation. Latently RCMV-infected donor F344 rats were treated with clodronate, PBS, or control liposomes 3 days prior to cardiac transplant into RCMV-naïve Lewis recipients. Clodronate treatment significantly increased graft survival from post-operative day (POD)61 to POD84 and decreased TVS at rejection. To determine the kinetics of the effect of clodronate treatment's effect, a time study revealed that clodronate treatment significantly decreased macrophage infiltration into allograft tissues as early as POD14; altered allograft cytokine/chemokine protein levels, fibrosis development, and inflammatory gene expression profiles. These findings support our hypothesis that increased graft survival as a result of allograft passenger macrophage depletion was in part a result of altered immune response kinetics. Depletion of donor macrophages prior to transplant is a strategy to modulate allograft rejection and reduce TVS in the setting of CMV + donors transplanted into CMV naïve recipients.

-enhanced MRI and that of thin-section computed tomography (CT) for pulmonary functional loss assessment and clinical stage classification of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in smokers.

Prospective study.

Fifty six smokers were included.

-enhanced MRIs were performed with a 3D T
-weighted fast field echo pulse sequence using the multiple flip angles.

Smokers were classified into four stages ("Without COPD," "Mild COPD," "Moderate COPD," "Severe or very severe COPD"). Maps of regional changes in T
values were generated from O
-enhanced MR data. Regions of interest (ROIs) were then placed over the lung on all slices and averaged to determine mean T
value change (ΔT
). Quantitative CT used the percentage of low attenuation areas within the entire lung (LAA%).

ΔT
and LAA% were correlated with pulmonary functional parameters, and compared for four stages using Tukey's Honestly Significant Difference test. Discrimination analyses were performed and McNemar's test was used for a comparison of the accuracy of the indexes.

There were significantly higher correlations between ΔT
and pulmonary functional parameters (-0.83 ≤ r ≤ -0.71, P < 0.05) than between LAA% and the same pulmonary functional parameters (-0.76 ≤ r ≤ -0.69, P < 0.05). ΔT
and LAA% of the "Mild COPD" and "Moderate COPD" groups were significantly different from those of the "Severe or Very Severe COPD" group (P < 0.05). Discriminatory accuracy of ΔT
(62.5%) and ΔT1 with LAA% (67.9%) was significantly greater than that of LAA% (48.2%, P < 0.05).

Compared with thin-section CT, 3D O
-enhanced MRI has a similar capability for pulmonary functional assessment but better potential for clinical stage classification in smokers.

However, most of the time it is overlooked, undiagnosed or mistreated. The present systematic review was performed to revise and summarize the existing knowledge related to this disorder, including diagnosis, treatment and prevention.
Compassion fatigue is described as the phenomenon of exhaustion and dysfunction in healthcare workers resulting from prolonged exposure to work-related stress and compassion stress. Oncology nurses are at high risk for compassion fatigue.

Our study aims to estimate the levels, prevalence and related factors of compassion fatigue dimension in oncology nurses.

Systematic review and meta-analysis.

Ten electronic databases were conducted in the systematic review and meta-analysis. Time frame of the searches is from inception up to 31 January 2020. The research team independently conducted study selection, quality assessments, data extractions and analysis of all included studies. The means, standard deviations and prevalence of three dimensions of compassion fatigue were pooled using random-effects meta-analysis. The PRISMA guideline was used to report the systematic review and meta-analysis. PROSPERO registration number CRD42020205521.

The systematic review included 21 studies, involving 6533 oncology nurses across 6 different countries.
