Age-dependent effects on salivary gland function and rheological properties of secreted saliva are not fully understood as aging is a complex and multifactorial process. We aimed to evaluate age-related changes in the rheological properties of saliva and elucidate the underlying mechanism. We performed ex vivo submandibular gland (SMG) and sublingual gland (SLG) perfusion experiments to collect saliva from isolated glands of young (12 wk old) and aged (27 mo old) female C57BL/6J mice and investigate the rheological properties by determining the spinnbarkeit (viscoelasticity). While fluid secretion was comparable in SMG and SLG of both mice, spinnbarkeit showed a significant decrease in SLG saliva of aged mice than that of young mice. There were no significant differences in GalNAc concentration between young and aged SLG saliva. Liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry analysis of SLG saliva revealed that (Hex)1 (HexNAc)1 (NeuAc)1 at m/z 793.31 was the most abundant O-glycan structure in SLG saliva commonly detected in both mice. Lectin staining of salivary gland tissue showed that SLG stained strongly with Maackia amurensis lectin II (MAL II) while Sambucus nigra agglutinin (SNA) stained little, if any, SLG. The messenger RNA expression of St3gal1 that encodes an α-2,3 sialic acid sialyltransferase SIAT4-A showed a decrease in SLG of aged mice, confirmed by a Western blot analysis. Lectin blot analysis in SLG saliva revealed that the relative signal intensity detected by MAL II was significantly lower in aged SLG. Our results suggest that spinnbarkeit decreases in SLG of aging mice due to downregulation of sialic acid linked to α-2,3 sialic acid sialyltransferase expression.Propofol is a commonly used drug for sedation and general anesthesia during cancer surgery. Previous studies indicate that propofol exerts anti-tumor effect in various cancers. The aim of this study was to investigate the underlying molecular mechanism of propofol in liver cancer. The effects of propofol on liver cancer cells were evaluated by cell viability assay, colony formation assay, and tumor xenograft model. Dysregulated lncRNAs of propofol-treated liver cancer cells were evaluated by transcriptome RNA sequencing. The underlying molecular mechanisms of lncRNA cancer susceptibility candidate 9 (CASC9) in propofol-induced anti-tumor effects were evaluated by western blot, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), wound scratch healing assay, transwell cell migration and invasion assay, TUNEL staining, fluorescence in situ hybridization, RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP), and chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP). We found that propofol suppressed proliferation, migration, invasion, and tumor xenograft growth of liver cancer cells in a dose-dependent manner. Triparanol in vivo Exosomes transfer from propofol-treated cells inhibited proliferation, migration, and invasion and promoted apoptosis of liver cancer cells. Transcriptional profiling of propofol-treated liver cancer cells identified CASC9 as significantly downregulated lncRNA in cells and exosomes. Enforced CASC9 expression partially rescued the inhibitory effects of propofol on liver cancer cells. Furthermore, CASC9 was found to interact directly with EZH2 and epigenetically regulated PTEN expression. Restoration of CASC9 partially abrogated the inhibition of propofol on Akt/mTOR signaling. Our results indicated that propofol exerted anti-tumor effects by downregulating CASC9, and subsequently suppressed Akt/mTOR signaling. Our findings provided a novel insight into propofol-induced anti-tumor effects in liver cancer.
Coil embolization is the mainstay treatment for carotid-cavernous fistulas (CCFs). However, few studies have reported entire occlusion of engorged veins to interrupt venous outflow. We report our experience with venous outflow-targeted coil embolization of direct CCFs.
We retrospectively reviewed all the patients diagnosed with direct CCFs treated with venous outflow-targeted coil embolization between November 2013 and February 2020. Venous outflow-targeted coil embolization of the CCFs was performed as follows. First, transarterial stent-assisted coil embolization of CCFs was performed. If the venous outflow to the engorged veins persisted after transarterial stent-assisted coil embolization, entire occlusion of the engorged veins and additional coil packing within the cavernous sinus were performed to interrupt the venous outflow.
Ten patients had undergone venous outflow-targeted coil embolization, 6 women (60%) and 4 men (40%). Transfemoral cerebral angiography showed high-flow, direct CCFs in all the patients. Venous outflow occurred through the superior ophthalmic vein (SOV) in all the patients and was completely interrupted by the entire occlusion of the engorged veins with fibered coils. Three patients (30%) had undergone additional treatment in a supplementary manner because of recurrent symptoms (chemosis in 1 patient, faint tinnitus in 2 patients) in the early postprocedural period (1 to 4 weeks). All the symptoms were resolved on follow-up. No additional recurrence was found during follow-up (1-75 months). No peri-procedural complications were encountered.

Venous outflow-targeted coil embolization of CCFs would be a safe and effective treatment method.Background Growth restriction is still a common problem in children with congenital heart disease (CHD). Evidence demonstrates that performing cardiac surgery in appropriate timing may result in better growth outcome. Aim To investigate prevalence and associated factors of malnutrition in pediatric patients with CHD who underwent cardiac surgery. In addition, post-operative growth outcomes at two weeks following cardiac surgery were also assessed. Methods A retrospective cohort study was conducted in pediatric patients who underwent cardiac surgery at Chiang Mai University Hospital between January and September 2014. Results One hundred patients with a median age of 28.5 months (range 14-62 months) were enrolled. Two-third of these patients had at least one form of malnutrition before receiving surgical treatment while wasting, stunting and combined wasting-stunting accounted for 23%, 28%, and 15% of patients, respectively. Multiple logistic regression analysis demonstrated that congestive heart failure-related symptoms were significantly associated with increasing risk of malnutrition (adjusted OR 4.4; 95% CI 1.78-11.26, p = 0.001). Two weeks after hospital discharge, wasting patients with regardless of stunting had significantly improved weight for height (WHZ) and weight for length Z-scores (WLZ) compared to growth parameters at the time of cardiac surgery, p = 0.012 and p less then 0.001, respectively. Conclusion The prevalence of acute and chronic malnutrition in pediatric patients with CHD who underwent cardiac surgery was very high in this study. Children with congestive heart failure had a four-time at risk of undernutrition. In short-term, cardiac surgery may mitigate acute malnutrition of these patients.

It concludes by considering how a Latin perspective can illuminate the continued hegemony of ideas and scientific practices originating in North America and northern Europe.Acinar cystic transformation (ACT) of the pancreas is a rare non-neoplastic cystic lesion. It is most frequently observed in the head of the pancreas. Despite advances in radiologic imaging methods, preoperative diagnosis of acinar cystic transformation is difficult, it is often confused with other cystic lesions. Here, we report three cases of acinar cystic transformation, one of which showed diffuse involvement of the pancreas, and the remaining two were multilocular localized cystic lesions. We analyzed their histomorphologic and immunohistochemical features. The patients' ages ranged between 15 and 43 years and the ratio of females to males was 21. On microscopic examination, the cysts were lined by a single layer of flattened-cuboidal or columnar epithelial cells. The epithelial cells were diffusely positive with trypsin and keratin 7, but patchy with keratin 19. Due to its rarity and lack of radiologic and clinical awareness compared with other pancreatic cystic lesions, preoperative diagnosis of acinar cystic transformation is difficult and not definitive. All cases reported to date have been clinically benign and there is no evidence of recurrence or malignant transformation. The optimal treatment and whether to perform surgery remain controversial.
The aim of this study was to determine whether patients treated with a caged reconstruction for metastatic acetabular disease would have a construct survival superior to that of their life expectancy.
We undertook a retrospective study, in a single centre in the United Kingdom, reviewing outcomes for 19 patients (20 hips) treated with a cage reconstruction for metastatic disease of their acetabulum over 6 years. Inclusion criteria were those with an impending fracture of the acetabulum, metastatic dissociation, fracture of the acetabulum and or femur and those whose life expectancy was considered by the oncology team to be >6 months.
In all patients the Restoration GAP II acetabular cage (Stryker, Howmedica Osteonics Corp, NJ, USA) was used in conjunction with a cemented acetabular cup and cemented femoral stem. The mean age at the time of surgery was 68 (44-87) years with breast cancer being the most common primary malignancy (31%) followed by prostate cancer (26%).Radiological survivorship estimates were 94.
