The current research examines this relationship across time, further validates the Self-Connection Scale (SCS), and examines the role of self-connection in both moderating and mediating this relationship. This allows for researchers and practitioners alike to utilise self-connection to help increase their own and others' well-being. METHODS One hundred and fifty-four participants completed measures of mindfulness, self-connection, and meaning over 4 weeks. We also included various measures related to well-being to further examine the nomological network of the SCS. RESULTS Multi-level models examined a total of 432 observations across 108 participants. Mindfulness predicted an increase in the presence of but not search for meaning. Self-connection partially mediated the effect on the presence of meaning and moderated the effect on the search for meaning. Furthermore, the SCS demonstrated good validity and reliability across time. CONCLUSIONS Self-connection, as measured by the SCS, has an important role in positive psychology, and those with a deficit are likely to benefit the most from increased mindfulness. Together, this provides several implications for using mindfulness and self-connection research in personal and professional practice. © 2020 The International Association of Applied Psychology.INTRODUCTION The aim of the present study was to assess how regional brain volumes associate with self-experienced social and emotional loneliness and social competence in very preterm and term-born preadolescents. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-four very preterm subjects (birthweight ≤1,500 g and/or gestational age less then 32 weeks) without neurodevelopmental impairments and/or major brain pathologies and 31 term-born subjects underwent magnetic resonance imaging at 12 years of age. Regional brain volumes were measured using an automated image quantification tool. At 11 years of age, social and emotional loneliness were assessed with the Peer Network and Dyadic Loneliness Scale-self-report questionnaire and cooperating skills, empathy, impulsivity, and disruptiveness with the Multisource Assessment of Children's Social Competence Scale-self-report questionnaire. RESULTS In the very preterm group, a number of significant associations were found between smaller regional brain volumes and self-experienced emotional loneliness, more impulsivity and more disruptiveness. In the control group, brain volumes and loneliness were not associated, and brain volumes and social competence were associated with a lesser degree than in the very preterm group. CONCLUSION Experiences of emotional loneliness and poorer social competence appear to be more related to brain volumes in very preterm preadolescents than in those born full-term. It also appears that in very preterm preadolescents, emotional loneliness may be more reflected in brain development than social loneliness. © 2020 The Authors. Within clinical settings hypoxic tissue may arise in several types of disorders. Furthermore, a hypoxic environment is being considered for space flight habitats in the near future. Female participants (N = 12) participated in this study comprising three 10-day interventions hypoxic ambulation (HAMB), normoxic bed rest (NBR), and hypoxic bed rest (HBR). Venous samples were collected prior to (day -2 Pre) and during the intervention (days 2 and 5), immediately before reambulation (D11) and 24 hr post intervention (R1). Blood samples were analyzed for aggrecan, hyaluronan, Type IIA procollagen amino terminal propeptide (PIIANP), and cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP). Total bone mineral density (BMD) in eight regions (2 mm × 10 mm) across the PFJ was determined. The three interventions (HAMB, HBR, and NBR) did not induce any significant changes in the cartilage biomarkers of hyaluronan or PIIANP. Aggrecan increased during the HAMB trial to 2.02 fold the Pre value. COMP decreased significantly in both NBR & HBR compared to HAMB on D5. There were significant differences in BMD measured across the PFJ from cortical patellar bone (735 to 800 mg/cm3 ) to femur trabecular (195 to 226 mg/cm3 ). However, there were no significant changes in BMD from Pre to Post bed rest. These results indicate that there were no significant detectable effects of inactivity/unloading on subchondral bone density. The biomarker of cartilage, COMP, decreased on D5, whereas the addition of hypoxia to bed rest had no effect, it appears that hypoxia in combination with ambulation counteracted this decrease. © 2020 The Authors. However, there is a paucity of information on gait phenotypes in NDD experimental models. This is in part due to the lack of understanding of the normal developmental trajectory of gait maturation in the mouse. MATERIALS AND METHODS Using the DigiGait system, we have developed a quantitative, standardized, and reproducible assay of developmental gait metrics in commonly used mouse strains that can be added to the battery of mouse model phenotyping. With this assay, we characterized the trajectory of gait in the developing C57BL/6J and FVB/AntJ mouse lines. RESULTS In both lines, a mature stride consisted of 40% swing and 60% stance in the forelimbs, which mirrors the mature human stride. In C57BL/6J mice, developmental trajectories were observed for stance width, paw overlap distance, braking and propulsion time, rate of stance loading, peak paw area, and metrics of intraindividual variability. In FVB/AntJ mice, developmental trajectories were observed for percent shared stance, paw overlap distance, rate of stance loading, and peak paw area, although in different directions than C57 mice. By accounting for the impact of body length on stride measurements, we demonstrate the importance of considering body length when interpreting gait metrics. CONCLUSION Overall, our results show that aspects of mouse gait development parallel a timeline of normal human gait development, such as the percent of stride that is stance phase and swing phase. This study may be used as a standard reference for developmental gait phenotyping of murine models, such as models of neurodevelopmental disease. © 2020 The Authors. Odorant cues from host plants play important roles in the insect behaviours. The main cultivated host of the oligophage oriental tobacco budworm Helicoverpa assulta is tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum). The volatiles of tobacco plants attract and stimulate oviposition in female moths. However, it is still unknown how female H. assulta recognizes tobacco volatiles and which odorant compounds are used as oviposition cues. RESULTS We detected 14 volatile compounds emitted from a tobacco plant during vegetative growth, using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Electroantennogram tests indicated that 8 of the 14 compounds induced responses in female H. assulta. Among these eight volatiles, nonanal greatly increased oviposition preference. Single-sensillum recording (SSR) results showed that many neurons housed in three types of short basiconic sensilla and four types of long basiconic sensilla responded to nonanal and heptanal as its structural analogue. The responses to nonanal were significantly stronger than those to the other compounds. Nonanal was the main ligand to OR67, an odorant receptor gene from H. assulta. This was demonstrated by an in vitro Xenopus oocytes expression system that support the SSR results. CONCLUSION Nonanal is a key signal volatile of tobacco plants that attracts female H. assulta moths to oviposit. This article is protected by copyright. Selleck Trichostatin A All rights reserved. This process could be easily deployed to any radiation oncology practice, with little clinical overhead or burden. METHODS AND MATERIALS The solution automatically retrieves all essential information from the clinical ROIS for each under-treatment patient and periodically (e.g., daily) saves these data to a dedicated secure server for recovery. In the event that the clinical ROIS is not functioning as a result of a cyberattack, this essential information is used to build a new secondary ROIS server to continue radiotherapy treatments until the main ROIS is recovered. Once the cyberattack threat is cleared, the clinical ROIS server is rebuilt from the institution's enterprise backup. The newly accumulated treatment information for each patient is then exported from the secondary ROIS to bring the clinical ROIS up to date. RESULTS The Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Maryland Medical System implemented this solution for clinical use with the Varian ARIA ROIS in the management of ~250 daily radiotherapy treatments, inclusive of a proton center. This solution was determined to be a feasible and affordable business continuity plan for the radiation oncology practice by minimizing radiation treatment downtime to a couple of hours in a simulated cyberattack drill. CONCLUSIONS The proposed solution can achieve continuation of radiation therapy treatment without treatment breaks in the event of a cyberattack. It also provides cushion time for radiation oncology departments to rebuild their clinical ROIS systems from the enterprise data backup. © 2020 The Authors.
