Knowledge of the strategy employed in a task may help subjects achieve better performances, as it would help to evidence other possible strategies that could be used as well as help perfect a certain strategy. We sought to investigate how much of a performance is conditioned by the initial state and whether behavior throughout the performance is modified within a short timescale. In other words, we focus on the process of execution and not on the outcome. To this scope we used a repeated continuous circle tracing task. Performances were decomposed into different components (i.e., execution variables) whose combination is able to numerically determine movement outcome. By identifying execution variables of speed and duration, we created an execution space and a solution manifold (i.e., combinations of execution variables yielding zero discrepancy from the desired outcome) and divided the subjects according to their initial performance in that space into speed preference, duration preference, and no-preference groups. We demonstrated that specific strategies may be identified in a continuous task, and strategies remain relatively stable throughout the performance. Moreover, as performances remained stable, the initial location in the execution space can be used to determine the subject's strategy. Finally, contrary to other studies, we demonstrated that, in a continuous task, performances were associated with reduced exploration of the execution space.Magnetic localizers have been widely investigated in the biomedical field, especially for intra-body applications, because they don't require a free line-of-sight between the implanted magnets and the magnetic field sensors. However, while researchers have focused on narrow and specific aspects of the localization problem, no one has comprehensively searched for general design rules for accurately localizing multiple magnetic objectives. In this study, we sought to systematically analyse the effects of remanent magnetization, number of sensors, and geometrical configuration (i.e. distance among magnets-Linter-MM-and between magnets and sensors-LMM-sensor) on the accuracy of the localizer in order to unveil the basic principles of the localization problem. Specifically, through simulations validated with a physical system, we observed that the accuracy of the localization was mainly affected by a specific angle ([Formula see text] = tan-1(Linter-MM / LMM-sensor)), descriptive of the system geometry. In particular, while tracking nine magnets, errors below ~ 1 mm (10% of the length of the simulated trajectory) and around 9° were obtained if θ ≥ ~ 31°. The latter proved a general rule across all tested conditions, also when the number of magnets was doubled. Our results are interesting for a whole range of biomedical engineering applications exploiting multiple-magnets tracking, such as human-machine interfaces, capsule endoscopy, ventriculostomy interventions, and endovascular catheter navigation.Universities contribute to economic growth and national competitiveness by equipping students with higher-order thinking and academic skills. Despite large investments in university science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education, little is known about how the skills of STEM undergraduates compare across countries and by institutional selectivity. Here, we provide direct evidence on these issues by collecting and analysing longitudinal data on tens of thousands of computer science and electrical engineering students in China, India, Russia and the United States. We find stark differences in skill levels and gains among countries and by institutional selectivity. Compared with the United States, students in China, India and Russia do not gain critical thinking skills over four years. Furthermore, while students in India and Russia gain academic skills during the first two years, students in China do not. These gaps in skill levels and gains provide insights into the global competitiveness of STEM university students across nations and institutional types.What conditions favour egalitarianism, that is, muted hierarchies with relatively equal distributions of resources? Here, we combine the hawk-dove and prisoner's dilemma games to model the effects of economic defensibility, costs of competition and gains from cooperation on egalitarianism, operationalized as the absence of hawks. We show that a 'leveller' strategy, which punishes hawkishness in the hawk-dove game with defection in the prisoner's dilemma, can be evolutionarily stable provided that the gains from cooperation are high relative to the benefits of hawkishness. Under these conditions, rare mutant levellers select for hawks that acquiesce to punishment by playing dove. If these 'acquiescent hawks' become common, levellers outperform hawks and establish a new egalitarian equilibrium. An analysis of human foraging groups corroborates these results, as groups with a greater reliance on cooperation are more egalitarian. Cooperation fosters greater equality when individuals can withhold its benefits from would-be dominant individuals.We studied the long-term dynamics of plant communities after bio and phytoremediation of oil-polluted soils. Nine plots located in European Northeast and treated using various bioremediation methods were monitored from 2002 to 2014. Geobotanical descriptions (relevés) of each plot were performed in 2006 and 2014, and Grime's theoretical CSR (competition-stress-ruderality) framework was used to assess the vegetation state and dynamics. We observed a clear shift of communities from pioneer (where ruderal species were prevalent) to stable (where competitor species were dominant) states. However, the remediation type did not significantly impact the vegetation recovery rate. After 12 years, all methods led to a 55-90% decrease in the oil content of the soil and a recovery of the vegetation cover. The plant communities contained mainly cereals and sedges which significantly differed from the original tundra communities before the oil spill. The control plot, treated only by mechanical cleaning, had minimum oil degradation rate (50%) and vegetation recovery rates, although, in CSR terms, its vegetation assemblage resembled the background community. Cereals (Agrostis gigantea, Deschampsia cespitosa, Phalaris arundinacea, and Poa pratensis), sedges (Carex canescens, Carex limosa, and Eriophorum vaginatum), and shrubs (Salix) were found to be the most effective species for phytoremediation, exhibiting high community productivity under the harsh northern conditions.Microglandular adenosis (MGA)-related lesions, including atypical MGA (AMGA) and carcinoma involving MGA (C-MGA), are characterized by epithelial atypia, negative hormone receptors, and HER2 status, and can mimic invasive triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) in core needle biopsies (CNB) resulting in selection for treatment with neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). We identified 12 cases of AMGA and/or C-MGA in post-NAC excision specimens (EXC) and analyzed their morphologic and immunohistochemical (IHC) features. All CNBs were initially diagnosed as containing TNBC. Upon re-review, TNBC was confirmed in nine cases. In three CNBs AMGA and/or C-MGA had been interpreted as TNBC. AMGA was initially recognized in only one case but AMGA and/or C-MGA were present in an additional nine CNBs. At EXC, no residual TNBC was present in 5 of 9 EXCs and all 12 cases showed residual AMGA and/or C-MGA. Similar to conventional MGA, AMGA, and C-MGA were positive for S-100, laminin and collagen IV and negative for calponin and p63. Following NAC, these lesions retained their typical staining pattern despite acquiring treatment-related morphologic alterations, most notably of which were areas of single cell growth pattern seen in eight EXCs. This study is the first to report the effects of NAC on AMGA and C-MGA. Our data showed no response of the AMGA and/or C-MGA following NAC in contrast to the high response rate of conventional TNBC. In particular, the infiltrative single cell pattern of post-NAC MGA-related lesions closely mimicked residual TNBC. The persistence of AMGA and C-MGA following NAC supports the notion that these lesions are distinct from conventional TNBC. Our findings also highlight the challenges in recognizing AMGA and C-MGA in CNBs which may lead to unwarranted treatment with NAC in the absence of conventional TNBC.Benign peripheral nerve tumors include schwannoma, neurofibroma, and perineurioma, as well as a recently recognized group of tumors with dual patterns of differentiation. The molecular pathogenesis of these so-called "hybrid" tumors remains poorly understood. Following identification of a novel CHD7-VGLL3 fusion gene in a hybrid schwannoma-perineurioma, we evaluated an expanded cohort of this tumor-type-as well as tumors with VGLL3 rearrangement identified from a curated molecular database-to characterize the prevalence of fusion genes among these tumors. Eighteen tumors met the inclusion criteria for this study. RNA sequencing identified VGLL3 rearrangement in 14 of these cases; the partner genes included CHD7 (ten cases), CHD9 (two cases), and MAMLD1 (two cases). Two cases possessed altogether unrelated fusions, including DST-BRAF and SQSTM1-CDX1 fusion genes. Finally, two cases lacked identifiable fusion products. These findings highlight the molecular diversity of these neoplasms, with frequent rearrangement of VGLL3. More importantly, despite their dual pattern of differentiation, our results reveal the pathogenesis of hybrid schwannoma-perineurioma is unrelated to conventional schwannoma and perineurioma, thereby implying this tumor represents an altogether pathologically distinct entity.Water level conditions are the key factors that affect the growth and distribution of wetland plants. Using Carex cinerascens (C. cinerascens) as the study species, we employ indoor simulations and field surveys. Our results show that C. cinerascens can adapt to rhythmic changes in the water level through different adaptation strategies. Compared to that of the control group, plant growth was better with a 0-0.4 cm/d water level rate, and plant growth was in the 42-56 cm range to that a 1.0-1.4 cm/d water level rate. Furthermore, it was observed that 0-0.4 cm/d was the most suitable growth rate, with 0.6-1.0 cm/d and 0-32 cm being the ideal plant tolerance ranges, and increasing to 1.0-1.4 cm/d and 32-56 cm exceeds the plant tolerance threshold. In the middle and late period of the experiment (25-45 d), the ecological characteristics of the plants changed significantly. For example, the root-to-shoot ratio of the plant in the stable water level reached 26.1. In our field observations, plant biomass can be influenced by a variety of environmental factors. The frequency of the species was the largest at an elevation of 15 m, and the growth status of the dominant and companion species of C. learn more cinerascens was weakened with an increase in soil moisture content. The suitable water content for C. cinerascens growth was 27.6-57.3%, the distribution elevation was 12.54-16.59 m, and the optimum elevation was 13.56-15.54 m. The study is expected to provide a reference for wetland ecology research and wetland protection and restoration, a theoretical reference for the coordination of water resource development and utilization of Poyang Lake and ecological protection of important lakes and wetlands, and an important scientific basis for wetland hydrologic regulation, ecological restoration and biodiversity conservation.
