Hybrid cement has become one of the most viable options in the reduction of CO2 emissions to the environment that are generated by the cement industry. This could be explained by the reduction of the content of clinker in the final mixture and substitution of the remaining percentage with supplementary cementitious materials with the help of an alkaline activation. Following that, properties that are provided by an Ordinary Portland Cement and of a geopolymer are mixed in this type of hybrid material and could be achieved at room temperature. Thereafter, the main objective of this research was to synthesize hybrid cements reducing the clinker content of Portland Cement up to 20% and use metakaolin and fly ash as supplementary cementitious materials in different proportions. The mixtures were alkaline activated with a mixture of sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide, calculating the amounts according to the percentage of Na2O that is present in each of the activators. The samples were then characterized using Compressive strength, X-ray diffraction, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, and Scanning Electron Microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The results indicated that the hybrid cements have similar mechanical properties than an Ordinary Portland Cement, and they resulted in a dense matrix of hydration products similar to those that are generated by cements and geopolymers.Additive manufacturing (AM) is a production process for the fabrication of three-dimensional items characterized by complex geometries. Several technologies employ a localized melting of metal dust through the application of focused energy sources, such as lasers or electron beams, on a powder bed. Despite the high potential of AM, numerous burdens afflict this production technology; for example, the few materials available, thermal stress due to the focused thermal source, low surface finishing, anisotropic properties, and the high cost of raw materials and the manufacturing process. In this paper, the combination by AM of meltable resins with metal casting for an indirect additive manufacturing (I-AM) is proposed. The process is applied to the production of open cells metal foams, similar in shape to the products available in commerce. However, their cellular structure features were designed and optimized by graphical editor Grasshopper®. The metal foams produced by AM were cast with a lost wax process and compared with commercial metal foams by means of compression tests.Mercury as one of the most toxic elements can be present in organic or inorganic form in marine fishes, which may cause a potential threat to public health. In this study, we investigated to determine the dietary organic (O-Hg) and inorganic (I-Hg) mercury threshold levels on induced mercury toxicity in juvenile olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus as a marine fish model. Twenty-eight fish averaging 3.1 ± 0.05 g (mean ± SD) were arbitrarily assigned to each of 27 tanks. Each tank was arbitrarily restricted to triplicates of nine experimental diets for eight weeks. The experimental diets were manufactured to contain 0 (Control), 10 (I-Hg10, O-Hg10), 20 (I-Hg20, O-Hg20), 40 (I-Hg40, O-Hg40) and 160 (I-Hg160, O-Hg160) mg/kg diet in organic form as methylmercury (MeHg) or in inorganic form as mercuric chloride (HgCl2). At the termination of the experimental trial, weight gains (WGs) of fish fed the control and 10 (I-Hg10, O-Hg10) diets were remarkably higher than those of fish fed the 20 (I-Hg20, O-Hg20), 40 (I-Hg40, O-Hg40) and 160 (I-Hg160, O-Hg160) (p gills. A broken-line regression model for percentage of WG indicated that the threshold toxicity level for an Hg-incorporated diet of juvenile olive flounder could be 13.5 mg Hg/kg in the form of HgCl2 and 8.7 mg Hg/kg in the form of MeHg.Soil covers most of Earth's continental surface and is fundamental to life-sustaining processes such as agriculture. Given its rich biodiversity, soil is also a major source for natural product drug discovery from soil microorganisms. However, the study of the soil small molecule profile has been challenging due to the complexity and heterogeneity of this matrix. In this study, we implemented high-resolution liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and large-scale data analysis tools such as molecular networking to characterize the relative contributions of city, state and regional processes on backyard soil metabolite composition, in 188 soil samples collected from 14 USA States, representing five USA climate regions. We observed that region, state and city of collection all influence the overall soil metabolite profile. However, many metabolites were only detected in unique sites, indicating that uniquely local phenomena also influence the backyard soil environment, with both human-derived and naturally-produced (plant-derived, microbially-derived) metabolites identified. Overall, these findings are helping to define the processes that shape the backyard soil metabolite composition, while also highlighting the need for expanded metabolomic studies of this complex environment.Lapatinib (LAP) and sorafenib (SOR) are multitargeted tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) with antineoplastic properties. In clinical observations, LAP and SOR may contribute to QTc prolongation, but the detailed mechanism for this has been largely unexplored. In this study, we investigated whether LAP and SOR affect the activities of membrane ion channels. Using a small animal model and primary cardiomyocytes, we studied the impact of LAP and SOR on Na+ and K+ currents. We found that LAP-induced QTc prolongation in mice was reversed by isoproterenol. LAP or SOR suppressed the amplitude of the slowly activating delayed-rectifier K+ current (IK(S)) in H9c2 cells in a time- and concentration-dependent fashion. The LAP-mediated inhibition of IK(S) was reversed by adding isoproterenol or meclofenamic acid, but not by adding diazoxide. The steady-state activation curve of IK(S) during exposure to LAP or SOR was shifted toward a less negative potential, with no change in the gating charge required to activate the current. LAP shortened the recovery from IK(S) deactivation. As rapid repetitive stimuli, the IK(S) amplitude decreased; however; the LAP-induced inhibition of IK(S) remained effective. LAP or SOR alone also suppressed inwardly rectifying K+ and voltage-gated Na+ current in neonatal rat ventricular myocytes. The inhibition of ionic currents during exposure to TKIs could be an important mechanism underlying changes in QTc intervals. The association between cancer and thrombosis has been known for over a century and a half. However, the mechanisms that underlie this correlation are not fully characterized. Hypercoagulability in cancer patients can be classified into two main categories Type I and Type II. Type I occurs when the balance of endogenous heparin production and degradation is disturbed, with increased degradation of endogenous heparin by tumor-secreted heparanase. Type II hypercoagulability includes all the other etiologies, with factors related to the patient, the tumor, and/or the treatment. Patients with poor performance status are at higher risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Tumors can result in VTE through direct pressure on blood vessels, resulting in stasis. Several medications for cancer are correlated with a high risk of thrombosis. These include hormonal therapy (e.g., tamoxifen), chemotherapy (e.g., cisplatin, thalidomide and asparaginase), molecular targeted therapy (e.g., lenvatinib, osimertinib), and anti-angiogenesis monoclonal antibodies (e.g., bevacizumab and ramucirumab).Breast cancer metastasis is the leading cause of cancer deaths in women and is difficult to combat due to the long periods in which disseminated cells retain a potential to be re-activated and start the relapse. Assessing the number and molecular profile of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in breast cancer patients, especially in early breast cancer, should help in identifying the possibility of relapse in time for therapeutic intervention to prevent or delay recurrence. While metastatic breast cancer is considered incurable, molecular analysis of CTCs still have a potential to define particular susceptibilities of the cells representing the current tumor burden, which may differ considerably from the cells of the primary tumor, and offer more tailored therapy to the patients. In this review we inspect the routes to metastasis and how they can be linked to specific features of CTCs, how CTC analysis may be used in therapy, and what is the current status of the research and efforts to include CTC analysis in clinical practice.AIMS Currently, we face the serious problem of multiple drug-resistant pathogens. The development of new antimicrobial agents is very costly and time-consuming. Therefore, the use of medicinal plants as a source of alternative antibiotics or for enhancing antibiotic effectiveness is important. METHODS The antibacterial effects of aqueous extracts of the seed coat of Pongamia pinnata (Linn.) Pierre in combination with several antibiotics against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) were tested by broth dilution, checkerboard, and time-kill methods. RESULTS For the combinations of P. Rapamune pinnata with ampicillin, meropenem, cefazolin, cefotaxime, cefpirome, and cefuroxime, 70% to 100% were synergistic, with a fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) index of less then 0.5. For the time-kill method with 0.5× minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of P. pinnata in combination with 8, 4, 2, and 1 µg mL-1 of the various antibiotics, almost all of the combinations showed synergistic effects, even with the lowest concentrations of P. pinnata, except for aztreonam. No antagonistic effect was observed for these combinations. CONCLUSIONS Based on these findings, aqueous seed coat extracts of P. pinnata have good potential for the design of new antimicrobial agents. The growing number of women, who are characterized by restrictive and bulimic behaviours towards their own body is observed especially in countries influenced by Westernalization. link2 However, there is a lack of cross-cultural studies in this area. The main aim of the present study was to examine the psychological and socio-cultural risk factors for eating disorders in Polish and Japanese women. A cross-sectional research study was conducted among 18- to 29-year old Polish (n = 89) and Japanese (n = 97) women. The variables were measured using the Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Scale SATAQ-3, and the Eating Disorders Inventory EDI-3. The descriptive and comparative statistics, Spearman's rho, and the stepwise regression analysis were used. The global internalization of socio-cultural standards of body image proved to be a significant predictor of Body Dissatisfaction among Polish and Japanese women. The main analysis showed a significant relation between the Drive for Thinness and Interoceptive Deficits in the group of Japanese women, as well as a correlation between Drive for Thinness and Asceticism in the group of Polish women. link3 The obtained results could improve the prevention aimed the dysfunctional eating behaviours. However, the cultural nuances need to be considered in understanding the risk factors for eating disorders.
