The addition of vinyl radicals to acetylene was investigated using time-resolved photoionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry at 500 and 700 K and 5-50 Torr. The formation of C6H6 was observed at all conditions, attributed to sequential addition to acetylene followed by cyclization. Vinylacetylene (C4H4) was observed with increasing yield from 500 to 700 K, attributed to the β-scission of the thermalized 1,3-butadien-1-yl radical and the chemically activated reaction C2H3 + C2H2 → C4H4 + H. The measured kinetics and product distributions are consistent with a kinetic model constructed using pressure- and temperature-dependent reaction rate coefficients computed from previously reported ab initio calculations. The experiments provide direct measurements of the hypothesized C4H5 intermediates and validate predictions of pressure-dependent addition reactions of vinylic radicals to C2H2, which are thought to play a key role in soot formation.Here we describe an asymmetric [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement of aryl iodanes that enables the enantioselective α-arylation of chiral 2-oxazolines, thereby producing valuable chiral α-aryl carbonyl compounds. The success of this protocol hinges on the selective assembly of aryl iodanes with 2-oxazolines and the smooth deprotonation of the in situ-generated iodonium-imine species. The nearly neutral and mild conditions of the reaction allow it to tolerate a wide variety of functional groups. Moreover, the remaining iodine atom in the products not only provides a versatile platform for further elaboration of such molecules but also supplies the asymmetric hypervalent iodine chemistry with a new class of chiral scaffolds.Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) attracts great popularity as an alternative to pristine graphene because of the facile synthesis process of its precursor, graphene oxide (GO). Electrical conduction of GO is tunable, subject to the extent of reduction of oxygen functional groups in it. This work for the first time demonstrates rapid reduction of GO using spark at ambient conditions. A stream of spark generated by applying high electric potential across two electrodes, when passed through a film of GO deposited on a porous substrate, reduces it into rGO. Upon sparking, the electrical resistance of the GO film drops down by an order of six within a second, making the reduction process instantaneous. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectra of spark-reduced graphene oxide (SrGO) films revealed a high C/O ratio with an increase in the domain of sp2-hybridized carbon. The electromechanical properties of SrGO were practically examined by testing it as a flex sensor by incorporating its films with commercially available gloves. It showed high sensitivity for bending and good repeatability while offering an easy route for textile integration, making an impactful statement about the potential of sparking as a cost-effective method to reduce GO on a large scale.Rapid, sensitive, and reliable pathogen detection is growing in importance in human health and safety. In this work, we report a stochastic DNA dual-walker-based colorimetric biosensor for bacterial detection. In the presence of target bacteria, two kinds of released multiple walking strands are allowed for continuous walking on the Au nanoparticle (AuNP)-based 3D track, resulting in destabilized aggregation of AuNP-based probes. The induced color change from red to blue can serve as an analytical signal for colorimetric detection of target bacteria. We demonstrated that this mothed enables sensitive and specific bacterial detection within 15 min due to its ultrafast reaction kinetics and sensitive color change, showing a linear response ranging from 100 to 105 CFU/mL with a limit of detection of 1 CFU/mL. Moreover, we also realized analysis of practical samples using this colorimetric biosensor. Given its features of rapid, sensitive, specific, and reliable analysis, our stochastic dual-walker-based colorimetric biosensor shows much promise in point-of-care testing for bacteria detection.Porous intercalation electrodes are synonymous with the promise of lithium-ion batteries toward electromobility. These electrodes exhibit stochastic geometrical features spanning different length scales. The implication of microstructural inhomogeneity on the lithium intercalation dynamics is hitherto unknown. Starting from three-dimensional (3D), X-ray tomograms of intercalation electrode microstructures, we characterize the microstructural variability in porous intercalation electrodes. Furthermore, a physics-based analysis of electrochemical response reveals that the stochastic features can cause preferential lithiation fronts.A convergent enantioselective total synthesis of cotylenin A is described. Currently, the extent to which these characteristics are considered in the anesthesia literature remains unknown. This study assesses their incorporation in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on anaesthesia-related interventions, for both patients and healthcare providers. This is a cross-sectional analysis using an existing dataset derived from the anesthesia literature. The dataset originated from a scoping review searching MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, CENTRAL, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic reviews. RCTs investigating the effect of anesthesia-related interventions on mortality for adults undergoing surgery were included. Equity outcome measures were recorded for both patients and providers and assessed for inclusion in study design, reporting of results, and analysis of intervention effects. Three-hundred sixty-one RCTs (n patients = 144 674) were included. Most RCTs (91%) reported patient sex/gender, with 58% of patients identified as male. There were 139 studies (39%), where 70% or more of the sample was male, compared to just 14 studies (4%), where 70% or more of the sample was female. In this study, we established a model of arrhythmia-induced heart failure (HF) in zebrafish and investigated the role of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) modulation by using an angiotensin II type 1 receptor blocker, fimasartan, through the assessment of cellular and physiologic responses, morbidity, and mortality. Methods HF was induced in zebrafish larvae by exposure to 20 μM terfenadine. Morphologic, physiologic, and functional parameters were assessed in the presence or absence of fimasartan treatment. Results Zebrafish exposed to terfenadine showed marked dilatation of the ventricle and reduced systolic function. Treatment with terfenadine was associated with 10-fold higher expression of atrial natriuretic peptide (p less then 0.001 vs. vehicle), increased p53 mRNA expression, and chromatin fragmentation in the TUNEL assay, all of which were significantly reduced by fimasartan treatment. Moreover, fimasartan improved fractional shortening (terfenadine + fimasartan 16.9% ± 3.1% vs. terfenadine + vehicle 11.4% ± 5.6%, p less then 0.05) and blood flow (terfenadine + fimasartan 479.1 ± 124.1 nL/sec vs. terfenadine + vehicle 273.0 ± 109.0 nL/sec, p less then 0.05). Finally, treatment with fimasartan remarkably reduced mortality (terfenadine + fimasartan 36.0% vs. terfenadine + vehicle 96.0%, p less then 0.001). Conclusions Fimasartan effectively protected against the progression of HF in zebrafish by improving hemodynamic indices, which improved survival. A reduction in apoptotic cell death and an improvement in hemodynamics may be the mechanisms behind these effects. Further human studies are warranted to evaluate the possible role of fimasartan in the treatment of HF.The authors wish to make the following corrections to this paper [...].The prehistory of the Lithuanian population and genetic relationship to other populations are poorly studied. Thus, the Lithuanian population, as an object of study, is interesting due to its partial isolation with genetic distinctiveness within the European context and with preserved ancient genetic composition. The main objects of this study was to infer demographic parameters, effective population size (Ne), and divergence time using high-density single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping data generated with the Illumina HumanOmmiExpress-12v1.1 array in 295 individuals from the Lithuanian population and to compare our data with other populations from the Human Genome Cell Line Diversity Panel (HGDP-CEPH). We also aimed to reconstruct past events between the main ethnolinguistic regions-Aukštaitija and Žemaitija of Lithuania. Historically, these regions probably developed as two independent Baltic tribes. Our results of Ne in the Lithuanian population through time demonstrated a substantial reduction of Ne over the 150,000-25,000 years before present (YBP). The estimated long-term Ne of the Lithuanian population is quite low-it equals 5404, which likely is a consequence of the bottlenecks associated with the last glacial period of 25,000-12,000 YBP in Europe. The obtained divergence time estimates between the study populations are in agreement with recent studies. The reconstructed past events in Aukštaitija and Žemaitija showed significant differences between these two regions of Lithuania.It is challenging to discriminate the early presentation of Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy (DCM) as well as sensitively and accurately distinguishing between mild, moderate, and severe levels of impairment. As gait dysfunction is one of the cardinal symptoms of DCM, we hypothesized that spatiotemporal gait parameters, including the enhanced gait variability index (eGVI), could be used to sensitively discriminate between different severities of DCM. A total of 153 patients recently diagnosed with DCM were recruited and stratified on the basis of DCM severity grades, as measured using the modified Japanese Orthopedic Association (mJOA) scale. Demographic information and neurological status were collected. Gait assessments were performed using an 8 m walkway. Spearman rank correlation was used to identify relationships between gait parameters and mJOA values as well as the mJOA lower extremity (LE) subscore. Kruskal-Wallis H test was performed to evaluate differences between severity groups, as defined by mJOA classification.
