French-door fridges combine functionality and form. They come with stylish double doors that show a large fridge on top and a freezer drawer below. These refrigerators stand out due to their special features, such as door-to-door dispensers and more expensive Ice makers.

We sought out experts like Ladina Schopf, an interior designer, architect, and founder of LS Projects, for tips on how to select the best one. They considered the capacity of storage, layout, and energy efficiency, among other factors.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

As the name suggests, the GE Profile series is geared towards those who want to incorporate cutting-edge technology into their kitchen. This fridge is loaded with them, from an in-the-door Keurig K-cup coffee maker to a clever water dispenser. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. This fridge is expensive and I expected more.

Aside from that blip the fridge is a great choice. It has a large freezer compartment, which is uncommon in counter-depth French door refrigerators. Additionally, it can hold a decent amount of frozen food compared to similar models.

The fridge is equipped with 17 shelves and compartments. The refrigerator compartment is 18.5 cubic feet, which is typical for a French-door refrigerator at this price. It has a decent-sized refrigerator with an ice maker in the left door. But it's not the most spacious one I've seen.

You can adjust the shelving in both compartments to create a custom storage setup for whatever you have to keep. The interior design of the GE PYE22PYNFS is good-looking, too. The LED lighting adds an attractive touch. The bins for storage inside have a third shelf which can be folded down to store tall items. The drawers are equipped with temperature controls, so you can set them to Beverage, Meat, or Deli settings. They're easy to open and close, but I found their textured plastic coatings a bit hard on the fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator is equipped with a complete set of features you'd expect from a fridge at this price that includes Wi-Fi as well as app support via GE's SmartHQ software. The app, available for iOS and Android devices, lets you control your refrigerator from anywhere in the world, and has a ton of customization options. It will also send you notifications when the door is left unlocked, when the freezer or fridge needs to be defrosted, and when the filter needs to be changed.

It would be nice if GE PYE22PYNFS came with Precise Fill it's an option in a handful of other GE refrigerators that allows you to set the number of cups of water you'd like to pour out at a time. It does offer a countdown feature on the fridge's display to display how much water you have remaining, but that's not as helpful as Precise Fill.

Bosch Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator


Designed to look like a seamless piece of your kitchen Bosch's French-door refrigerator looks seamless and is a standout. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also has a vegetable compartment which keeps vegetables and fruits fresher for longer periods, and dual compressors to preserve food items. The Ice maker we tested is one of the most efficient and makes an ice pyramid with only a little water. french door fridge and freezer is perfect for a single family or a kitchenette that wants a built-in appearance and top-of-the line food preservation.

This fridge was the top-rated refrigerator in our Refrigerators test, for a few reasons. Its freezer temperatures remained constant at just above 0°F and never fluctuated more than a fraction - this is crucial to prevent freezer burn. The fridge section of the fridge also performed well, reaching the desired temperature for initial set within a matter of hours and keeping that temperature steady over the course of our testing.

Bosch is known for its premium appliances which is why it's no surprise that this counter depth refrigerator is also a smart appliance, with the option to connect to your home Wi-Fi as well as Bosch's Home Connect platform. The app allows you to monitor and control the refrigerator remotely using your smartphone or tablet. The fridge is expensive however, it offers excellent features and capabilities at a reasonable cost.

While the fridge is a fantastic appliance however, it is important to understand the limitations. You might need to be creative with tall items because the fridge is limited in shelf space. The shelves are not resistant to spills and are easily stained or damaged by sharp objects. The trays can be easily removed from the fridge. However, they should be cleaned frequently to stop the growth of mold.

LG Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The LG LRFLC2706S is a great counter-depth refrigerator that packs a lot of storage space into the frame's compact size. It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. The fridge is built with an ordinary French door design, and two rows of shelves that can be used to capture spills and a set of crisper drawers. The top shelf on the right can be folded down to give tall items more space. There's also a full-width drawer for deli items and an internal water dispenser.

This refrigerator is equipped with an ice maker, making it simple to transfer ice when needed. The freezer is designed with thoughtful elements, too, like sliding drawers to help you to organize the place of items. It also has a large container for storing frozen food and a separate container for ice.

Another awesome feature of this refrigerator is its Smart InstaView panel. You can manage the temperature, lighting and more of your fridge from your smartphone. It's a great method of monitoring and managing your refrigerator, particularly if you're away from home.

The Smart InstaView feature is neat however it doesn't enhance the performance of the fridge. In fact it took a bit longer to defrost and chill food in this refrigerator than some of the others we test. This is likely due to its bigger capacity.

The other issue we have with the door of this refrigerator. The handles with a sunken design let shorter people open them from the bottom. However, taller people still struggle to close them without slamming them. It would have been much better if they came with a front-mounted handle.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX fridge is an excellent option for those looking to blend the aesthetics of a French-door refrigerator with a more efficient design. Its capacity is above average for a counter-depth model and it cools evenly and has a great layout. It's also a little less than the most expensive counter depth refrigerators that have an ice maker, making it a desirable choice.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

If you're looking for an French door fridge that doesn't break the bank and isn't expensive, this Frigidaire is a solid option. It's a minimalist design that isn't as striking in appearance as some of the competition but it does have enough features to make it a solid choice. Its most important feature is the adjustable temperature drawer, which helps keep foods like veggies and meat fresher for longer. It also comes with a large ice maker as well as a water dispenser.

Another feature that is worth mentioning is the "Chill Drawer" that sits over the two crisper bins. This drawer lets you redirect a portion of the fridge's cooling power directly to this area, meaning you can store foods that require extra attention. You can alter this feature using a slider that's located right outside of the drawer. You can also alter the general cooling settings for the entire fridge. I have found that the general settings work better than the specific ones.

In my tests, I found that the temperatures in the refrigerator were fairly consistent across various parts of the fridge. The temperatures in the middle, top and bottom of the fridge didn't differ significantly from 38 degrees. This is a great performance however it doesn't be among the top in our rankings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. This fridge can be connected with a smart thermostat to get more accurate readings on the internal temperature of your fridge.

The Frigidaire FGHB2866PF's exterior is constructed of stainless steel with a grey-bodied body which has a "smudge-proof" finish. It blocks streaks and fingerprints better than other stainless steel finishes I've tried.
