3 Wheeler Buggies: The Ugly Facts About 3 Wheeler Buggies
3 Wheeler Buggies

A three-wheel buggy is great for rough terrain providing a smooth ride for your infant. They are also more convenient to maneuver and push than a four-wheeler, especially if they have fabric sling seats or seat units that are positioned snugly within the frame, providing the best ergonomics and weight distribution.

Stability

Three-wheeled buggys are extremely stable, which makes them a great option for off-roading (especially when they are equipped with a seat unit that is all-terrain or off-road). They typically have large front tires that can handle bumps, kerbs and rough terrain. Some have a lockable wheels on the front to provide extra stability when driving on uneven terrain.

It is important to remember that 3-wheel buggies can have a lower centre of gravity than 4-wheeled models and this can mean that they topple over more easily. But, the top 3-wheel buggies have the an ideal geometry and design to ensure that they remain stable in all conditions. They should be able turn at a whim and be easy to steer with one hand. They also feature the ability to rotate 360o on the front wheel which makes them perfect to navigate difficult terrain.

Look for models that have pneumatic tyres. They are made to be able to navigate tracks that aren't paved and are able to withstand dirt, gravel, rocks, etc. Many all-terrain buggies feature an swivelling front wheel that can be locked to provide stability when working on extremely rough terrain.

A 3-wheeled pram is a great choice for runners and those who love to speed up the hill. This is especially true if you plan to connect a car seat or carrycot. The Roma Atlas is a great example, offering a world-facing seat that reclines flat. It also has improved 5-point harness and storage space for all your gear (plus an extension of 50+ sun hood). It's light, compact and suitable from birth and can be used with car seats or a carrycot. It also allows for some moderate jogging, but it's not designed for serious runners.

Weight

If you're looking for a buggy that can handle difficult terrain, then you'll need one with large wheels. They can handle grass, cobbles and dirt tracks, while providing the smoothest ride for any passenger. They are also ideal for jogging because they come with built-in suspension and are easy enough to climb up and down kerbs. However, the downside is that they can be quite heavy to push.

The Mountain Buggy Urban Glide 2 is the best 3 wheel buggy for use on rough terrain (pictured above). This 3-wheel buggy has 16 rear wheels with a lockable swivel front wheel which makes it very maneuverable. It has air-filled tyres that need to be pumped up from time to time. It can accommodate children up until the age of three. MFM reviewer Kath says that her toddler loved the shape of the seat and found steering it easy even with her three-year-old on board.

The Baby Jogger Versa GT is an alternative that is also a great choice. It has an adjustable handlebar, a hood made of high-end materials that offers 50+ UV protection, and an extremely high-quality hood. It's also simple to get up and down kerbs and can fit in small car boots. It can also be used as a pram with baby car seat for newborns and toddlers.

Fabric slings are set within the frame and not on top as modular seats. This model has a lower centre-of-gravity, which is the ideal height. It is much easier to push, and lighter to kerb pop (you can't underestimate the number of times you'll do that as a new parent!).

Seating

There are many options for seating in 3 wheelers. For a newborn it is possible to use the carrycot plus (which MFM reviewer Alice says is a cozy and comfortable lie-flat bed that can be used both on and off the buggy) and older infants and toddlers can be seated in the world-facing or parent facing seat unit that is roomy and padded, and comes with adjustable ventilation. It is important to note that the seats aren't fully reclined however, they can be adjusted to the lowest setting that will still allow your child plenty of headroom and space to move around.

A fabric sling is also available. It is advantageous in that it is positioned inside the frame, rather than on top as a seat that is modular. This results in a lower centre of gravity with perfect weight distribution. This makes it easier to push, especially on bumpy terrain or over curbs. MFM reviewer Kath liked the way this kind of seat handled the obstacles.

This type of buggy comes with an extensive basket and other features that are useful such as an hood that can be extended with 50+ UV protection, a simple to use brake pedal and some unique visibility lights that can be positioned in front of the occupants for improved safety on difficult terrain.

If you're seeking a buggy that will grow along with your family it's the sport(tm), a world-first designed to accommodate the newborn, and later be modified to accommodate two or three children as they grow, all in one footprint.

Storage

The 3-wheeled frame makes the buggy much more stable to push one handed and is also ideal for handling terrain that is difficult to navigate. However, it does mean that the shopping basket can't hold as much as a four-wheeled buggy.

A top-quality ATP will come with pneumatic tyres with a padded grip for better comfort, and an excellent suspension. 3 wheel pushchair Pushchairs And Prams will be able to accept a carrycot or car seat, so you can use it from birth.

MFM's reviewers have noticed that the 3-wheeler frame doesn't fit through all the doors in their homes, or small car boots - make sure to check the dimensions of the buggy when it's folded before buying for those who are concerned about space.

Find a 3-wheeler that has 2 (or 3!) seats. This is the most suitable option for your future and can save you money. The iCandy Strawberry Sport is among the most sought-after. It can be used as early as day dot as a single buggy, and later transformed into twin buggies when your baby starts to walk.

Tyres

Air filled tyres have been designed to give your child a more comfortable ride by cushioning bumps and uneven surfaces. They are commonly found on pushchairs like the Phil & Ted’s Sport which MFM reviewer Kath said offered "an outstanding ride for her toddler". She also said that the grippy tires of the Phil and Ted's Sport made it simple for her to navigate the kerbs and other obstacles.

These tyres are sometimes difficult to maintain and will require air pressure topped up regularly. These tyres are prone to punctures, and you should always carry a repair kit and spare inner tube when you're out and out and about.

PU tyres are typically found on pushchairs as they are less expensive than tyres filled with air, but they are just as robust. PU tire are easily identifiable by their matte finish and soft feel. They also slide across flat and tidied surfaces.

If you rub your hands over the tyres you can determine if they're PU or rubber. If it feels as if it's sliding, then it's a PU. You can also confirm that your buggy is fitted with PU tyres by slipping the tyres onto flat, clean surfaces They'll roll easily and fit snugly in their wheel hubs.

Foam tyres can handle the rough terrain associated with high-performance buggies. The downside of this is that the foam may compress and make your buggy feel less stable because it loses its springy nature. The tyres can also be noisy because they generate a lot noise when you turn and navigate around the town.
