Surgical removal of third molars is a common procedure undertaken by both general dentists and oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Although rare, iatrogenic displacement of the tooth or root fragments into adjacent fascial spaces is a known complication. This case report details the retrieval of displaced root tips from a mandibular third molar into the sublingual space using intraoperative navigation to minimize surgical exploration. Oral-maxillofacial surgeons should consider using 3-dimensional navigation during scheduled retrieval of displaced teeth, fragments, or foreign objects to minimize the risk of surgical complications.
New surgical techniques for the treatment of benign prostatic obstruction (BPO) have emerged in recent years. selleck kinase inhibitor We sought to give an overview on each of these technologies.
A comprehensive review of the literature between 2013 and 2020 was carried out by a panel of national experts already practicing these interventions. All the data were then discussed among all the co-authors in order to obtain a consensus with regard to the selected articles and their analysis. Finally, an inventory was drawn to provide an overview of these technological advances and their availability in France.
The treatment benign prostatic obstruction has diversified greatly over the past 5 years. 5 new technologies have emerged, allowing today a transurethral non-ablative treatment (UROLIFT®, ITIND®), a transurethral ablative treatment (REZUM®), a transurethral ablative treatment with robotic assistance (AQUABEAM®) or an endovascular management by embolization of the prostatic arteries. Only UROLIFT® is considered an established tedical and surgical treatment. These technologies are not all at the same level of development, evaluation and level of proof, but have in common a limited distribution in France, in particular given their cost. Validated studies will allow them to position their subsequent use more precisely.
Human papillomavirus-vaccinated cohorts, irrespective of age, will likely reduce their subsequent screening requirements, thus opening opportunities for global cost reduction and program sustainability. The determinants of uptake and completion of a 3-dose human papillomavirus vaccination program by adult women in a European context were estimated.
This was an intervention study.
Study participants were women aged 25-45 years, attending opportunistic or population-based cervical cancer screening in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom between April 2016 and May 2018.
Study participants completed a questionnaire on awareness and attitudes on adult female human papillomavirus vaccination and were invited to receive free human papillomavirus vaccination.
Main outcome measures were acceptance, uptake, and completion of vaccination schedule. Determinants of vaccine uptake were explored using multilevel logistic models in 2019.
Among 3,646 participamen.
Acceptance and schedule completion were largely dependent on recruitment method, achieved coverage of national vaccination programs, and personal relationship status. Knowledge of benefits and safety reassurance may be critical to expanding vaccination target ages. Study results suggest that there are no major opinion barriers in adult women to human papillomavirus vaccination, especially when vaccination is offered face to face in healthcare settings.

Despite elevated serum uric acid (eSUA) has been identified as independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, its prognostic value in the setting of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is still controversial. Although the mechanisms of this possible relationship are unsettled it has been suggested that eSUA could trigger the inflammatory response. This study sought to investigate the association between eSUA with short- and long-term mortality and with inflammatory response in patients with STEMI treated with primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI).
Blood samples were collected on admission and at 24 and 48h after pPCI the inflammatory biomarkers C-reactive protein (CRP), neutrophil count and neutrophil to lymphocytes ratio (NLR) were considered. Baseline eSUA was defined as ≥6.8mg/dl. Cumulative 30-days and 1-year mortalities were estimated using the Kaplan-Meyer analysis. Multivariable analyses were performed by Cox proportional hazard models. In the 2369 patients with STEMI considered, 30-day mortality was 5.8% among patients with eSUA and 2% among patient with normal SUA level (p<0.001); 1-year mortality was 8.5% vs 4%, respectively (p<0.001). At multivariable analyses eSUA was an independent predictor of 30-day mortality (HR 1.196, 95%CI 1.006-1.321, p=0.042) and 1-year mortality (HR 1.178, 95%CI 1.052-1.320, p=0.005). eSUA patients presented higher values in on admission CRP (p<0.001) and in neutrophil count and NLR at 24h (respectively, p=0.020 and p<0.001) and at 48h (p=0.018 and p<0.001) compared to patients with normal SUA levels.
Elevated serum uric acid is associated with higher short- and long-term mortality and with a greater inflammatory response after reperfusion in patients with STEMI treated with primary PCI.

Upon consumption, carotenoids, which may attenuate cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, diffuse from the blood and accumulate in the skin. This study aimed to assess the associations between dietary, plasma, and skin carotenoids with CVD risk indicators and to examine the mediational role of plasma carotenoids in the relationship between skin carotenoids status (SCS) and CVD risk.
Dietary, plasma, and skin carotenoids were assessed in a cross-sectional study from a community in Singapore (n=103) aged 50 to 75y. Multiple linear regression and binary logistics regression models were used to examine the associations between the carotenoids status with classical CVD risk factors and composite CVD risk indicators. After controlling for covariates, SCS and plasma carotenoids were inversely associated with systolic blood pressure (skin P<0.001; plasma P<0.05) and diastolic blood pressure (skin P<0.001; plasma P<0.005). Additionally, each increment of 1000 in SCS was associated with an odds ratio of 0.924 (P<0.01) for metabolic syndrome diagnosis and 0.945 (P<0.05) for moderate to high CVD risk classification. Associations between SCS and composite CVD risk indicators were null when adjusted for the corresponding plasma carotenoids, indicating complete mediation. Dietary carotenoids, however, showed no relationship with the CVD risk indicators.
Carotenoids bioavailability may be important for cardiovascular protection. SCS, driven by the corresponding plasma carotenoids, could be a potential noninvasive surrogate marker for CVD risk determination in middle-aged and older adults.

In Italy, the spread of the novel coronavirus (SARS-Cov-2) required lifestyle changes that have affected food choices and people's health condition. We explore people's perception of the role of food consumption as a preventive measure and how it reconfigures consumption habits.
We conducted an online survey of a representative sample of 1004 Italian citizens. Around 40% of the population perceive that strengthening the immune defences through nutrition is not important to reduce the risk of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. People with lower levels of perceived importance are slightly younger and have a less healthy lifestyle. They are less worried about the emergency. During the last months, they have bought less food supplements and also intend to decrease their purchase in the next 6 months.
In COVID-19 pandemic, scholars underline the importance of having a strong immune system. However, the Italians who attribute less importance to food that helps the immune system seem to differ negatively in their psychological attitude towards the emergency and food consumption. Today, Italians are asked to engage in preventive food practices to protect against possible chronic diseases; exploring their perceptions is important to orient them towards this change.

The first hybrid artificial pancreas (AP) systems with insulin only (mono-hormonal) have recently reached the market while next generations systems are under development including those with glucagon addition (bi-hormonal). Understanding the expectations and impressions of future potential users about AP systems is important for optimal use of this clinically effective emerging technology.
An online survey about AP systems which consisted of 50 questions was addressed to people with type 1 diabetes in the province of Quebec, Canada. Surveys were completed by 123 respondents with type 1 diabetes (54% women, mean (SD) age 40.2 (14.4) y.o., diabetes duration 23.7 (14.1) years, 58% insulin pump users and 43% glucose sensor users). Of the respondents, 91% understood how AP systems work, 79% trusted them with correct insulin dosing, 73% were willing to replace their current treatment with AP and 80% expected improvement in quality of life. Anxiety about letting an algorithm control their glucose levels was expressed by 18% while the option of ignoring or modifying AP instructions was favoured by 88%. As for bi-hormonal AP systems, 83% of respondents thought they would be useful to further reduce hypoglycemic risks.
Overall, respondents expressed positive views about AP systems use and high expectations for a better quality of life, glycemic control and hypoglycemia reduction. Data from this survey could be useful to health care professionals and developers of AP systems.

This study examined if the weight loss and metabolic benefits of alternate day fasting (ADF) varies according to sex and menopausal status in adults with obesity.
This secondary analysis pooled the data of men and women (n=75) who participated in three 12-week ADF studies (500kcal fast day; alternated with an ad libitum intake feast day). Body weight decreased in premenopausal women (-4.6±3.2%), postmenopausal women (-6.5±3.2%) and men (-6.2±4.4%) (main effect of time, P<0.001), with no difference between groups (no group×time interaction). Energy intake on fast days was higher than prescribed in all groups (∼400-500 excess kcal consumed), with no differences between groups. Fat mass, lean mass, fasting insulin, and insulin resistance, and blood pressure decreased similarly in all groups (main effect of time, P<0.05 for all comparisons). LDL cholesterol decreased more in postmenopausal versus premenopausal women (group×time interaction, P=0.01). Fasting glucose, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides remained unchanged in all groups.
