Melding form with functionality, French-door refrigerators have elegant double doors that open to a spacious fridge up the top and a freezer drawer below. These refrigerators stand out due to their distinctive features, including door-to-door dispensers and more expensive Ice makers.

We asked experts like Ladina Schopf, interior designer, architect, and founder of LS Projects, for tips on choosing the right model. They considered the capacity of storage, layout, and energy efficiency among other features.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The name implies that the GE Profile series is geared towards consumers who want to incorporate cutting-edge technology in their kitchen. This fridge is loaded with them all including a Keurig K cup coffee maker on the door, to a clever dispenser of water. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. Since this refrigerator is an extra amount, I'd like to see higher quality.

Apart from that minor flaw however, this refrigerator is a great choice. It has a large freezer compartment, which is uncommon in counter-depth French door refrigerators. Furthermore, it can hold a decent amount of frozen food in comparison to similar models.

The fridge has 17 shelves and compartments. The refrigerator compartment is 18.5 cubic feet, which is the standard for a fridge with a French door at this price. It has a decent-sized icemaker in the left door. But, it's not the largest one I've seen.

You can alter the shelves in both compartments to create customized storage arrangement for the items you need to store. The GE PYE22PYNFS's interior design is stylish, too. The LED lighting is a nice feature, and the in-door storage bins come with a third shelf that folds up beneath itself to allow you to store large items. The drawers include temperature controls that let you set them to Meat, Beverage, or Deli settings. The drawers are simple to open and shut, but I found the textured plastic coatings a bit hard on my fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator includes the full suite of features you'd expect from a fridge at this price that includes Wi-Fi as well as app support through GE's SmartHQ software. The app, which is available for iOS and Android devices allows you to control your refrigerator from anywhere in the world, and it has many options for customizing. It also alerts you when doors are left open, when the fridge or freezer needs defrosting and when it's time to change the filter.

It would be nice if GE PYE22PYNFS came with Precise Fill it's an option in a handful of other GE fridges that allow you to choose how many cups of water you'd like to dispense at once. The fridge displays a countdown to show you how much water is left, but it's not as useful as Precise Fill.

Bosch Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The Bosch French-door Refrigerator is a stunning piece of equipment. It's designed to look like it's a seamless component of your kitchen. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also has a vegetable compartment that keeps vegetables and fruits fresher for longer, and two compressors for the best preservation of food. The ice maker we tested is one of the most efficient, and it produces an ice pyramid with only a little water. This refrigerator is a great option for a single family or kitchenettes looking for a built-in look and top-of-the-line food preservation.

However, they should be cleaned frequently to stop the growth of mold.

LG Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The LG LRFLC2706S is an excellent counter-depth refrigerator that packs plenty of storage into a compact frame. It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. The fridge features a standard French door design, and two rows of shelves that can be used to capture spills and a set crisper drawers. The top shelf on the right can be folded down to give taller items more space. You'll also find a full-width drawer for deli and an inside water dispenser.

One of the nice aspects of this refrigerator is that the ice maker is inside the freezer, making it simple to move the ice to the refrigerator to use as needed. The freezer has thoughtful design elements, too, like sliding drawers that help better organize the placement of your items. It also has a large bin that can hold plenty of frozen food and a separate storage bin for ice.

Another awesome feature of this refrigerator is its Smart InstaView panel. It allows you to control the fridge's temperature, lighting, and more using your smartphone. It's a nice way to monitor and manage your refrigerator, especially when you're away from home.

But while the Smart InstaView is a neat feature, it doesn't necessarily enhance the overall performance of the refrigerator. The refrigerator took longer to chill food and defrost it than the other fridges we test. This is likely due to the bigger capacity.

The doors pose a problem with this refrigerator. They have sunken handles on the front, which allow smaller people to open them from the bottom, however they're difficult for taller people to pull shut without slamming them. It would have been much better if they had a front-mounted handles.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX fridge is a great choice for those who want to combine the aesthetics of a French-door refrigerator with a more efficient design. It has a capacity that is superior to counter-depth models, and it cools evenly. It's also a bit cheaper than the best counter depth refrigerator that comes with an ice maker, making it a desirable option.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

This Frigidaire French door refrigerator is a great choice when you're looking for a French door fridge that doesn't break the budget. It's a minimalist design that's not as striking visually like some of the competitors, but it has enough features to make it a good pick. Its most significant feature, the adjustable temperature drawer, helps to keep food like meat and vegetables fresher for longer. It also comes with a huge water dispenser as well as a good Ice machine that is fast.

Another great feature is the "Chill Drawer" that sits above the two crisper bins. The drawer lets you use some of the fridge's cooling power into this area so that you can keep food items that require special attention. This feature is adjustable using a slider located outside the drawer. You can also set the general cooling settings for the entire fridge. I've found that the generic settings are more effective than the specific ones.

In my experiments, I noticed that the temperatures of the refrigerator were fairly consistent in different areas of the fridge. Temperatures in the top and bottom of the fridge didn't stray much from 38 degrees, and even the middle of the fridge was within a degree of 36. This is a good performance, but it does not quite make it to the top of our ratings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. You can also pair this fridge with an intelligent thermometer to get more precise measurements of the internal temperature of your fridge.


The Frigidaire FGHB2866PF's outside is made of stainless steel with a grey body that has a "smudge-proof" finish. It is capable of removing streaks and fingerprints even when compared with glossier stainless steel finishes on other appliances I've tested.
