Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) have evolved to become a frequent treatment option for patients with persistent throat symptoms. The evidence for their use in this context is, however, conflicting. This review assesses the quality of the published systematic reviews and meta-analyses evaluating PPIs in persistent throat symptoms.

Following a literature search, systematic review were evaluated using the Reporting of Bias in Systematic Reviews (ROBIS) tool and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) checklist. Outcome measures were analysed using the "checklist to operationalize measurement characteristics of patient-reported outcome measures."

10 systematic reviews were assessed. All but one were at high risk of bias. No review met the PRISMA checklist criteria. No identified PROM met the checklist requirements for validation. Significant methodological concerns include inappropriate selection of studies for inclusion, poor selection of outcome measures, a lack of appropriate bias assessments and inconsistent reporting of reviews.

The detection of seropositive stray cats in the proximity of farms of infected minks, coupled with the demonstration of cat-to-cat transmission in experimental settings, raise the question whether stray cats may have an epidemiological role in the COVID-19 pandemic and may act as sentinel for the circulation of SARS-CoV-2. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA and anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in free roaming cats belonging to colonies located in an area highly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and to correlate the results with the positivity rate in people sharing the same area. Interdigital, cutaneous, oropharyngeal, nasal and rectal swabs, as well as blood samples, were collected from 99 cats living in colonies and admitted to our hospital for neutering. This caseload corresponds to the 24.2% of the feline population living in the 25 sampled colonies and to the 5.6% of all the free-roaming registered cats. The presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in swabs was assessed using real time RT-PCR. Anti-SARS-CoV-2 serum antibodies were assessed using commercially available ELISA kits and confirmed by serum virus neutralization. In people, the SARS-CoV-2 positivity rate ranged from 3.0% to 5.1% (mean rate 4.1%) and the seropositive rate from 12.1% to 16.3% (mean rate 14.2%). Most of the colonies were in urban areas and resident cats had frequent contacts with external cats or people. A COVID-19 positive caretaker was found, whereas all the cats were negative for SARS-CoV-2 RNA and seronegative. Although the negative results cannot exclude previous infections followed by decrease of antibodies, this study suggests that colony cats do not have an important epidemiological role in SARS-CoV-2 transmission dynamics. Further studies on larger caseloads are warranted, also in the light of the emerging new viral variants, on a One Health perspective.The ability of an orthopedic implant to integrate successfully with the surrounding bone tissue is imperative for optimal patient outcomes. Here, the recent advances and future prospects for diamond-based coatings of conventional osteo-implant materials (primarily titanium) are explored. The ability of these diamond coatings to enhance integration into existing bone, improved implant mechanical properties, facilitate surface chemical functionalization, and provide anti-microbial properties are discussed in context of orthopedic implants. These diamond-based materials may have the additional benefit of providing an osteo-inductive effect, enabling better integration into existing bone via stem cell recruitment and bone regeneration. Current and timely research is highlighted to support the discussion and suggestions in further improving implant integration via an osseoinductive effect from the diamond composite materials.Diverse structural frameworks are found in natural compounds and are well known for their chemical and biological properties; such compounds include the imidazoles and oxazoles. Researchers worldwide are continually working on the development of methods for synthesizing new molecules bearing these basic moiety and evaluating their properties and applications. To expand the knowledge related to azoles, this review summarizes important examples of imidazole and oxazole derivatives from 1,2-dicarbonyl compounds, such as lapachones and phenanthrene-9,10-diones, not only regarding their synthesis and biological applications but also their photophysical properties and uses. The data concerning the latter are particularly scarce in the literature, which leads to underestimation of the potential applications that can be envisaged for these compounds.The characteristics of acidic polysaccharides extracted from Daucus carota L. var. sativa Hoffm were investigated and its hepatoprotective effects on alcoholic liver injury were determined in the mice model. A carrot polysaccharide (CPS-I Carrot polysaccharide-I) with the molecular weight of 3.40×104  kDa was isolated from Daucus carota L. and purified by diethylaminoethyl-52 and Sephadex G-150 column chromatography. The components were analyzed by HPLC, which revealed that CPS-I consisted of galacturonic acid, rhamnose, xylose, arabinose, fructose, and galactose at a relative ratio of 1  3.16  1.13  5.53  3.45  7.76. Structural characterization analysis suggested that CPS-I was mainly composed of →6)-β-D-Galp-(1→ and →5)-α-L-Araf-(1→. The hepatoprotective effect of CPS-I was evaluated by alcoholic liver injury mice model. The results showed that the administration of CPS-I (300 mg/kg/day) alleviated the alcoholic liver injury in mice by increasing the levels of ADH and ALDH and reducing oxidative stress. CPS-I ameliorated the pathological changes of liver characterized by lipid accumulation, and reduced the number of lipid droplets.Cultivated jute, which comprises the two species Corchorus capsularis and C. olitorius, is the second most important natural fibre source after cotton. Here we describe chromosome-level assemblies of the genomes of both cultivated species. The C. selleck chemical capsularis and C. olitorius assemblies are each comprised of seven pseudo-chromosomes, with the C. capsularis assembly consisting of 336 Mb with 25,874 genes and the C. olitorius assembly containing 361 Mb with 28 479 genes. Although the two Corchorus genomes exhibit collinearity, the genome of C. olitorius contains 25 Mb of additional sequences than that of C. capsularis with 13 putative inversions, which might give a hint to the difference of phenotypic variants between the two cultivated jute species. Analysis of gene expression in isolated fibre tissues reveals candidate genes involved in fibre development. Our analysis of the population structures of 242 cultivars from C. capsularis and 57 cultivars from C. olitorius by whole-genome resequencing resulted in post-domestication bottlenecks occurred ~2000 years ago in these species. We identified hundreds of putative significant marker-trait associations (MTAs) controlling fibre fineness, cellulose content and lignin content of fibre by integrating data from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) with data from analyses of selective sweeps due to natural and artificial selection in these two jute species. Among them, we further validated that CcCOBRA1 and CcC4H1 regulate fibre quality in transgenic plants via improving the biosynthesis of the secondary cell wall. Our results yielded important new resources for functional genomics research and genetic improvement in jute and allied fibre crops.
During all stages of oncologic diseases, pain is still a major problem. The Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) is one of the most frequently used tools for pain assessment, although interpretation is difficult. The main objective of this study is to compare two types of pain evaluation scales NRS versus (non) acceptable pain evaluation scale. The secondary aim is to analyze a 10% sample of patients indicating non acceptable pain more in-depth.

To assess the pain evaluation scales, a prospective observational study, with a nested retrospective in-depth exploration, was conducted. One-year data of patients visiting the outpatient clinic of the oncology center of a university hospital were used. Besides the pain scores of all patients, a 10% sample of patients indicating non acceptable pain was analyzed more in-depth.

During 1year, a total of 37,580 patients registered at the outpatient clinic, of whom approximately 10% indicated non acceptable pain. The mean NRS of patients indicating non acceptable pain was 6.5 (n=2153). For patients indicating acceptable pain, the mean NRS was 1.6 (n=21,010). Although the presence of pain recorded in the patient record increased substantially over the year, the percentage of reported interventions only slightly increased.

The (non) acceptable pain evaluation seems a valuable addition to the NRS for assessing pain among patients with cancer. As interpretation of the NRS appears to be difficult, using the (non) acceptable pain evaluation is recommended. Moreover, creating awareness among specialists to discuss pain has a positive effect on the amount of pain discussed during consultation.

Pressure injuries (PIs) are one of the most common complications related to immobility, especially in hospitalized patients, which lead to increased morbidity, infection and overall decreased quality of life. Arginine supplementation may prevent the development of PIs. This study has summarized the findings of studies on the effect of arginine supplementation on PI healing.

Systematic review and meta-analysis.

This study was conducted on online electronic databases including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar and Embase to identify relevant clinical trial studies up to September 2020. The pooled effect size of arginine supplement effects on PI was evaluated with standard mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI).

Eight studies met the inclusion criteria for this meta-analysis with 196 patients. PIs were significantly improved with Arginine supplementation (SMD -0.6; CI 95% -0.9 to -0.3, I
